Korean National Culture Encyclopedia -Syngman Rhee
Born in 1875 in Masan -myeon, Pyeongsan -gun, Hwanghae -do. He entered the Baejae Institute in April 1895 and has been actively participating in the Manmin Community and Independence Association since 1898. However, in January 1899, he was involved in the conspiracy of the Emperor Gojong and was imprisoned for five years and seven months. In prison, he wrote the Spirit of Independence and was released on August 9, 1904 as a special pardon. In November, he went to the United States with Min Young -hwan and Han Kyu -seol and met with Secretary of State John Hay and Presidentodore Roosevelt to petition Korea's independence preservation. He received a Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1910 after he was a Bachelor of George Washington University and a master's degree in Harvard University. While returning to Korea in August, he was involved in the '105 incident' and was under pressure from Japan. Since then, he continued to work in the United States until he returned home in October 1945.
Immediately after the March 1st Movement in 1919 , he was appointed to lead the leadership of the elderly, the Shanghai government, and the Hansung government. In June, the Gumi Commission was installed in Washington. In September 1919, he was elected president of the Provisional Government and served as president of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai for about six months from December . As an ambassador for the Provisional Government of Korea, he attempted to attend the Washington Disarmament Conference in May 1921, but returned to Hawaii in September 1922. In March 1925, he was impeached by the president. However, the Diplomacy of the Gumi Commission continued until 1929. In November 1932, he was appointed to the Ambassador to the full -time ambassador and was actively pursuing Korea's independence at the International Federation Conference. At this time, I met Francesca Donner and married. In 1933, he was appointed as the Provisional Government Commissioner, in 1934, Foreign Affairs Committee, and the Foreign Affairs Commissioner of the United States in 1940. In the same year, he published " The Inner Make of Japan ". After the outbreak of the Pacific War, the US government requested approval of the Provisional Government and organized the Korea -US Association. In September 1942, he contacted the US Strategic Bureau to connect the Provisional Government's Liberation Army to carry out operations with the US military.
After liberation in 1945, he returned to Korea on October 16, and was organized by the Central Council of Independence . In February of the following year, it was reorganized into the Korea Independence National Assembly. He opposed the Smile Joint Committee and insisted that the government should establish a sole government in the south of the 38th line . After a smile, he visited the United States and opposed the compromise with the Soviet Union. When the smile was completely broken and the issue of the Korean peninsula was transferred to the United Nations, it participated in the elections conducted under the UN surveillance.
In the 1948 general election, he was elected to the Dongdaemun-gu G district. After serving as Chairman of the Constitutional Assembly, he was elected President of the Republic of Korea . In December 1948, the government received approval from the United Nations, expressed its opposition to the activities of the Special Investigation Committee on Anti-National Activities in 1949, and promoted and implemented land reform . On June 25, 1950, the Korean War broke out. In 1952 , he passed the ' Extracted Constitutional Amendment Bill ', which aimed at direct presidential election , and was re-elected in the second presidential election . In the process of promoting the armistice agreement, after consultation with the United States, the ' ROK-US Mutual Defense Treaty ' was signed in 1953, and the 'ROK-US Agreement Minutes' were signed the following year. In 1954, he ran for the presidential election in 1956 through a ' constitutional amendment ' and was elected as the third president. For post-war recovery and economic revival, an economic development plan was drawn up and an Industrial Development Committee was established. He was elected in the 4th presidential election in 1960 , but when the April 19 Revolution broke out, he resigned from the presidency and went into exile in Hawaii . He died in 1965 and was buried at the Seoul National Cemetery .
