thailand The ninth king of the Zhangli dynasty .

He reigned for a whopping 70 years from 1946 to 2016 , the year after the end of World War II , and was the longest-reigning king among the world's monarchs at the time of his life.[4]

At the moment of a political crisis, he played the role of mediator and showed overwhelming charisma and received enthusiastic support from the Thai people to be called the Great King . On October 12, 2016, the health deteriorated on October 12, 2016, and eventually passed away on October 13, the next day. The only son Mahawachi Ralong Braided (มห ลงก ลงก ณ) succeeded the throne and crowned the new king.

In this way, Thailand's modern and contemporary history has a strong influence of Rama 9, so gossiping about the royal family in Thailand is considered absolute taboos .[5] In the case of his son, Rama X, there is a privacy or humanity controversy, but it rarely deals with this publicly due to the Thai emotional characteristics, which have traditionally been loyal to the royal family, including Rama IV.

korea He is also a member of the Mugunghwa Daedae Medal and the Kukkuk Medal of Korea . The Konkuk Medal was a grateful for helping South Korea by participating in the Korean War as a member of the UN Army during his reign . It was awarded when President Chun Doo -hwan visited Thailand.

3. career

3.1. prior to coronation

December 5, 1927, USA Massachusetts He was born in a hospital in Cambridge as the second son of his father, Prince Mahidon Adulyadej, who majored in public health at Harvard University , and his mother, Sinagarindra. Because he was born while his father was studying abroad, he has the unique history of being the only hereditary monarch born in the United States .[6]

Bhumibol returned to Thailand with his family in 1928 when his father, Prince Adulyadej, finished his studies, but the following year, his father passed away from kidney failure , losing him before he was even two years old. Bhumibol briefly attended school in Bangkok and then moved to Switzerland with his mother in 1933. He moved to Lausanne and continued his studies.[7] In 1935, when his childless uncle, Rama VII, abdicated the throne, Bhumibol's nine-year-old brother, Ananta Mahidorn, ascended the throne as Rama VIII . However, King Rama VIII and Prince Bhumibol only briefly stopped in Thailand during their coronation, but stayed in Switzerland to complete their studies, and the government was led by the regent.

After graduating from a liberal arts high school in Lausanne, he entered the University of Lausanne in 1945 and majored in science. With the end of World War II, his family was finally able to return to Thailand.

His older brother, Rama VIII , died from a mysterious gunshot wound on June 9, 1946, just one year into his reign, and Bhumibol inherited the throne and ascended the throne as Rama IX on June 9, 1946 .[8] Bhumibol returned to Switzerland to complete his studies before the end of the 100-day mourning period immediately after ascending the throne, and changed his major to law and political science. Meanwhile, in Thailand, his uncle, Prince Ransit Prayudasakdi, served as regent.[9]

King Rama IX often visited Paris while studying in Switzerland, where he first met Sirikit Kitiyakorn , the daughter of the Thai ambassador to France and the great-granddaughter of King Rama V. He was distantly related to King Rama IX.[10] Sirikit was 15 years old at the time and studying abroad with the goal of becoming a professional pianist. On October 4, 1948, while driving a Fiat Topolino on the Geneva-Lausanne road, King Rama IX collided with the rear of a truck and suffered serious injuries, including facial paralysis, spinal injuries, and loss of vision in his right eye .[11] At this time, while I was in the hospital in Lausanne, Sirikit came to visit me often. King Rama IX's mother, who had taken notice of Sirikit, encouraged her to continue her studies near Lausanne, and the two became closer and quietly held an engagement ceremony in Lausanne on July 19, 1949. Nine months later, they were officially married on April 28, 1950, just one week before the official coronation of King Rama IX.

The coronation ceremony, which had been repeatedly postponed due to studies and accidents , was held at the Grand Palace in Bangkok on May 5, 1950, and Sirikit also became the official queen.[12] The King and Queen went on a honeymoon to Hua Hin , returned to Switzerland, completed the remainder of their studies, and returned permanently in 1951. When his grandmother, Queen Sabang Batana, passed away in 1956, he followed Buddhist customs and became a monk for a short period of 15 days from October 22 , and then received ordination from the king . During that time, Queen Sirikit performed public affairs as regent .

3.3. A series of military coups

At the time of his accession to the throne, Thailand's military dictator General Plaek Phibunsongkhram was in power for a long time as prime minister, and the king was only a symbolic figure. Then, in August 1957, six months after the general elections were held, General Sarit Thanarat took direct aim at the Phibunsongkhram government. In the process of commemorating the 2500th anniversary of the reign of Buddhism, the government took issue with the claim that it had insulted the royal family. General Phibunsongkhram, who was in a political crisis, visited King Bhumibol on September 16, 1957 and appealed for his support. King Rama IX recommended that he resign himself to prevent a coup, but Phibunsongkhram refused. Eventually, that evening, Sarit Thanarat staged a coup and seized power. Two hours after the coup, King Rama IX declared martial law throughout the country and appointed Sarit Thanarat as commander of the Capital Defense Command, giving strength to the coup.

The Thai royal family, which had been weakened since the Siam Revolution in 1932, was dramatically revived under the protection of General Sarit Thanarat . King Rama IX expanded his presence by appearing at various public events, touring the country, and sponsoring large-scale development projects. In June 1960, he visited the United States and gave a speech to Congress, and in September of the same year, he visited Rome at the invitation of Prime Minister Giovanni Gronchi , touring various European countries and also played an active role in the diplomatic arena.

General Sarit Thanarat sought to secure his own legitimacy by increasing the authority of King Rama IX, who justified his coup. In particular, it was during this period that traditional customs that had been abolished by King Rama V were revived one after another. The etiquette of crawling on the floor and prostrating when attending an audience with the king was revived , and the Tamayut sect, a Buddhist sect sponsored by the royal family, gained prominence. The ceremony of the king going up the Chao Phraya River on a royal boat and offering prayers to a temple was also resumed for the first time in 30 years since the absolute monarchy was abolished. December 5, Rama IX's birthday, was designated as a new national holiday, while the anniversary of the 1932 Siamese Revolution disappeared. From the royal family's point of view, Sarit Thanarat was a benefactor, so when Sarit Thanarat died in 1963, the royal family declared an unprecedented 21-day mourning period and placed a five-story mountain symbolizing the royal family on his body.

After the death of General Sarit Thanarat, General Thanom Kittikatjon took power and continued the military dictatorship, but eventually encountered great resistance in the form of the Thai people's uprising in 1973. King Rama IX initially asked the protesting students to disperse, but as dozens of students died due to excessive police crackdown and the riots spread out of control, he had no choice but to resign from his position as prime minister and exile Thanom Kitikajong abroad.

King Rama IX briefly distanced himself from the military as a democratic government was established after the fall of the Thanom regime. However, as neighboring countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos became communist one after another, guerrilla forces and communist movements rapidly emerged within Thailand, and the king, concerned about political instability, began reaching out to the military again in 1975. King Rama IX toured military bases across the country and publicly warned of internal and external threats, while actively fostering far-right militias and paramilitary organizations. King Rama IX summoned General Thanom, who had been in exile, back to the country, saying that students and opposition party members were trying to communistize Thailand, arousing strong anger from the people.

When angry students at Thammasat University staged a play to protest the government in 1976, extreme right-wing forces used this as an excuse to harshly suppress the students, killing and raping them , and the military staged a coup on the day of the massacre in the name of social stability and ousted the democratic government. King Rama IX, on the contrary, fully supported this coup and announced that it was 'a manifestation of the will of the people', and then selected far -right anti-communist Tanin Kraiwitian as the new prime minister among the three candidates recommended by the military . However, the Tanin regime also fell in October 1977, a year later, in another coup led by General Kriangsak Chamanan. When public sentiment hit rock bottom due to the second oil shock in 1980, Kriangsak Chamanan handed over the position of prime minister to his successor, General Prem Tinnasulanon .

3.3.1. Democratization in 1992

King Rama IX played a decisive role in Thailand's transition to democracy in 1992. Thailand previously ended the long-term military rule of General Prem Tinnasulanon in 1988.[13] Prime Minister Chatchai Chun Ha-wan 's democratic government was established, but the coup that took place on February 23, 1991 brought the country back to a military dictatorship. After the 1992 general election, the elected lawmakers elected General Suchinda Kraprayun, a leading figure in the coup, as prime minister. As a result, fierce opposition protests broke out and suppression forces were deployed, resulting in the Black May Incident, which resulted in numerous deaths. The situation reached a catastrophe due to clashes between the military and police and protesters, and as riots and bloody clashes spread throughout Bangkok, tensions reached their peak as rumors of a division within the military circulated.

As the fear of civil war engulfed the entire country, King Rama IX personally intervened. The king summoned Prime Minister Suchinda and former Bangkok mayor Jamrong Srimuang , a leader of the pro-democracy movement , to the palace and reprimanded both sides, saying, "What is the use of shouting victory over the ashes?" At this audience, which was broadcast live on TV, the sight of the leaders of the military and the democratic camp kneeling before the king in accordance with royal etiquette and bowing their heads while receiving a stern reprimand left a deep impression both at home and abroad, and Prime Minister Suchinda, who had lost the king's support, had no choice but to resign immediately after the audience.

3.3.2. 2006 military coup

With the success of democratization in 1992, Thailand entered an era of civilian rule for 14 years. However, the military, feeling threatened by the overwhelming approval rating and rapid rise of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who came to power in 2001, eventually staged a coup on the evening of September 19, 2006, ousted the Thaksin government and took control of Bangkok without shedding a single drop of blood . The military accused ousted Prime Minister Thaksin and his regime of committing various crimes, including lese majeste, and pledged allegiance to King Rama IX. Martial law was immediately declared, the constitution was abolished, and general elections scheduled for October were canceled. All protests and political gatherings were also completely banned.

There are many opinions about the king's role in this coup, but the mainstream theory is that King Rama IX implicitly approved the military coup . At the very time when special forces units were being mobilized for the coup, the king was meeting alone with the chairman of the Privy Council , Prem Tinnasullanon , the behind-the-scenes planner of the coup . If the king had not approved it, it would have been impossible for the coup to have occurred in Thailand, where the king's influence is absolute. Ultimately, the accepted theory is that the royal family, wary of Thaksin Shinawatra 's influence growing too much especially in the northern rural areas, combined with the military, vested interests, and urban elites to oust Thaksin.

The military formed the Constitutional Court to judge election fraud allegations by Thaksin 's political party, the Thai Rak Thai Party , and the opposition Democratic Party of Thailand . The court acquitted the Democratic Party, but disbanded Thaksin's Thai Rak Thai Party and banned 111 party executives from political activities for five years. The military used the king as a propaganda tool in a referendum on the new constitution they had written. On April 20, 2009, former Prime Minister Thaksin revealed in an interview with the Financial Times that King Rama IX had already been informed of the plan before the coup, but the Thai embassy completely denied this claim.

Since the military could not avoid international condemnation and ignore the negative economic impact of direct dictatorship, they held another general election. However, in the general election held in December 2007, the People Power Party, a pro- Thaksin political party, the successor to the Thai Rak Thai Party , won a landslide victory, and Thailand was once again plunged into turbulence. The military thought that the conservative Democratic Party would take power since they had even changed the constitution, but Thaksin's support base was stronger than expected. In the end, the judiciary, dominated by vested interests, forcibly ruled that even the People Power Party was disbanded, and power naturally passed to the conservative Democratic Party, the largest opposition party in the National Assembly. However, the Democratic Party also lost public support due to excessive suppression of protests.[14] In the July 2011 general election, Thaksin Shinawatra's younger sister Yingluck Shinawatra was elected as the new prime minister. As the antagonism between pro-Thaksin forces and anti-Thaksin forces continued, General Prayuth Chan-o-cha eventually staged a military coup in 2014.[15] A constitutional amendment was implemented and the military's influence was greatly increased.[16]

On May 26, 2014, King Rama IX officially approved General Prayuth Chan-ocha's coup, lending legitimacy to it. Therefore, the framework of a civilian government is still maintained to this day, but it is inevitable that the military will look at it, and because the royal family and the military combine, any prime minister they do not like is immediately dismissed through the Constitutional Court.[17] In fact, it is no different from a dictatorship of vested interests.

3.4. Dead

Due to his advanced age, his health began to deteriorate in 2007 , 2009 and 2011 , and he was hospitalized, treated, and discharged repeatedly. This was partly because King Bhumibol had shown himself as an unapproachable sage for a long time, but on the other hand, it was also because he did not want the Crown Prince to ascend the throne. For information on this, please refer to the item below. However, it was confirmed that he had undergone laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery in October 2014, as well as being very old, raising a red flag for his future health. # In particular, he showed up to pay tribute to the crowd every year on his birthday, but in 2014 and 2015, when even that deteriorated to the point that he could not attend, anxiety about the king's health grew. On December 14, 2015, an interview with the new judge at the hospital where he was hospitalized was broadcast, and his condition seemed to improve. # Appearance at the reception

However, in early 2016, pneumonia symptoms recurred, and in the middle, the condition worsened even more, and it was known that he was absent from official appearances one after another, went to the hospital and was receiving recuperation treatment, and later put on a ventilator. #

Eventually, on October 13, 2016, he died at the age of 88. The news of death at 19 o'clock in Thailand was known through royal media. #

The Thai government suspended all schedules and declared a year-long memorial period, urging citizens to refrain from recreational activities and wear black clothing for the next 30 days . Thai websites, media outlets and all broadcasters are in black and white, and Thai embassies abroad have also flown the flag at half-staff . Schools were also temporarily closed for a day. All broadcasting companies were ordered to stop transmitting their own programs for a month and air special programs provided by state-run broadcasters. They said they were dissatisfied with foreign media about reducing the number of mourners, so they stopped broadcasting. #

It is said that YouTube and Google are constantly monitoring posts that contain 'insulting the royal family'. # Facebook has accepted pressure from the Thai government to crack down on posts blaspheming the royal family. #

The remainder of the 2016 season of the Thai Premier League was canceled and the semi-finals of the Thai FA Cup were canceled, with the winner decided by lottery.

The ATP Challenger event scheduled to be held in Hua Hin in the last week of October has also been canceled.

<2016 JYP NATION IN BANGKOK>, which was scheduled to be held from November 5th to 6th, was also canceled.

People also gazed at the hospital building in front of Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok, where King Bhumibol is located, and some even walked near the hospital. #1 , #2

Commemorations continued from leaders of foreign countries, # ## President Park Geun-hye of the Republic of Korea also issued a statement of condolence. # North Korea also expressed condolences in the name of Kim Jong-un . #

Bhutan , a Buddhist country , designated the 14th as a 'day of mourning', flags were flown at half-mast and schools and government offices were closed. Additionally, special prayer meetings will be held at Buddhist temples in Bhutan for the next seven days. King Jigme Kesar Namgiel Wangchuck led a prayer service for the deceased King Bhumibol and visited Thailand to personally attend the funeral ceremony.

On the 15th, tens of thousands of mourners from all over the country flocked to the palace. # On the 22nd, mourning was held at Sanam Luang Park in front of the Royal Palace. # Starting on the 29th, the Royal Palace, where the King's body is enshrined, opened to the public for the first time. #

Meanwhile, a Thai woman who criticized Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and Privy Council President Prem Tinnasulanon was charged under the lese majeste law . # Fortunately, the charges were acquitted as they did not explicitly target the royal family, but there are concerns that people who raise questions about the king's service and those who do not wear black could become targets of mass action such as lynching due to the monarchist nationalism that has become absolute since the 1970s. # So the government explained that it was not forcing it, and local media also criticized the collective action. #

Princess Maha Zhi -ri Sirinton is preparing for funeral funerals in advance . # The funeral to be held in October 2017 will be equipped with a 50.49m high wooden sculpture that embodies Sumi Mountain , known to be the place where the Thai royal family returns. #

The next king is expected to hold a coronation in mid -October 2017 , and before the crown, Premin Nagananon[18] It is known that the director will be in charge of regent .[19] But 2016 On October 18 , after the at least 15 days of memorial service, the king's crowning process would be appropriate, Prime Minister Prafu said. # The dominant analysis is to see the Thai government's choice to minimize the political anxiety of regents for a year without the throne.

The Thai government has officially awarded him the title 'the Great'. # This wave of commemoration has the effect of lowering the crime rate. #

The funeral will be held on October 26, 2017 and will be designated as a holiday. At the funeral home near the royal palace in Bangkok , the king of Machi Wachi Ralon was presided over by the king of 7,500 people including missions, monks, and royal families . 200,000 citizens who gathered around the funeral hall mourned the king of King Bhumibol. #

4. Achievements

Crowds gather to celebrate King Rama IX's 85th birthday
Yingluck Shinawatra , who became prime minister in 2011, is bowing to the portrait.[20]
In 1932, the military coup d'état was voluntarily exiled to a foreign country , abolished the monarchy and the constitutional monarchy was introduced, and as the military ruled for a long time, monarchs were greatly lost in Thai society. However, Rama IV restored much of monarchy by serving as a coordinator in real politics, and supported the military regime in the 1960s and 1970s, supporting the military regime and fulfilling the unwavering role. Military sovereignty, which was in danger of being abolished after Rama VII, was reborn as an absolute theme based on Article 6 of the Thailand Constitution, 'The king can make a decision as a symbol of the state'.

In 1992, when the military led by Suchinda Kraprayun caused the Black May Incident and dissolved parliament by force, a democratization movement broke out led by Bangkok Mayor Jamrong Srimuang . Police forces fired firearms in the process of suppressing the protesters, causing bloodshed and worsening international public opinion. At this time, King Rama IX summoned Suchinda and Jamrong to the palace.

Two people of water stinta and Zamlong entered the fish and crawled into the knees as the royal court. Later, Pumi Phone's "inappropriate" for the water steamed, who was not approved for the legitimacy of the coup, fled to a foreign country, and the water cabinet lost its power, and the democratic government was established through the general election. The incident gained the absolute support of the people, and the world media were surprised by the Thai military sovereignty, which literally lit the coup d'etat.

King Rama IX traveled around the country at a village level rather than a city level, specifically developing the entire region and solving problems through royal projects. A famous example is a project to convert desperate rural villages in the border area into Thailand's No. 1 coffee plantation, as they felt sorry for living through drug cultivation. This royal project is a Buddhist 'Dhammaraja'[21] He himself stated that this is what he should do as a benevolent king, and at the same time, he is doing everything a king can do to the fullest under a constitutional monarchy . It is also famous that under the influence of this royal project, most hospitals in Thailand were built with royal property. In addition, King Rama IX made a dedicated effort to promote agriculture in Thailand, including leading more than 1,000 agricultural projects and providing royal land for land reform . Also, as one of the results, Thailand's Ministry of Science and Technology led the development of an international technology patent for cloud seeding in relation to artificial rainfall . Thanks to this, the country was able to successfully create artificial rainfall and make it rain when the drought was severe .[22]

5. problem

However, as the reign is 70 years, there are not many criticisms of achievements and actions. The case of dismissing the aforementioned water cabinet mentioned above is only one of the six coups that were not approved by King Pumi Phone. There were 15 coups during Rama 9's reign, of which 9 were approved according to the royal interests. In Thailand, even the coup can be successful only to be approved by the monarch. In the Thai politics, the monarch exerts power as the most important political actor, far beyond the "reign and unbeaten" king of the constitutional monarch , and does not mean that Rama 9 is the guardian of democracy. Rama IV has developed his influence by using the steadily sanctified absolute authority in the 70's during the long period of reign, and has developed his influence by approving or rejecting a coup d' etat .

Like this, the alliance between the military and King Rama IX raises serious doubts about whether the reputation of the so-called 'holy army' is true. In the first place, castles are not compatible with democracy. Seonggun is the name given to a monarch who has benefited the country with his power. In democracy, all power comes from the people and is given to elected representatives, and hereditary monarchs cannot hold any power and exist only as symbols. In a normal constitutional monarchy, the king has no power in his hands, so of course he cannot be a prime minister.[23] Compared to other countries, British Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn is an ardent republican who in 2015 refused to sing the God Save the Queen national anthem and take the Privy Council member's oath of loyalty, which involves kneeling and kissing the back of the Queen's hand. The royal family recognized his beliefs and accepted his refusal.

In relation to this, there are criticisms that King Rama IX is using the coup politically to strengthen the monarchy's authority, and suspicions have even been raised abroad that he even aided this. In 2006, the military staged a coup, disbanding the cabinet and parliament led by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and the prime minister went into exile abroad. The reason for the coup put forward by the military was Thaksin's corruption scandal, but there is also an opinion that the interests of the two groups coincided in ousting Thaksin, who had an uneasy relationship with vested interests, including the royal family and the military.

As a result, some have criticized King Rama IX's influence on Thai politics as 'opportunistic collusion between the hereditary ruler and the military' and the resulting 'suffocation of democracy'. King Rama IX is said to be decisively responsible for the stagnation and decline of Thai democracy that continues to this day.

Perhaps that is why, after the death of King Rama IX, criticism of the king gradually surfaced, including being reported in overseas media. Of course, most of this is a synergistic effect resulting from the combination of the Thai people, Thai politics, and customs, but there are definitely forces within Thailand that criticize the former king. However, criticism is not made by the Yellow Shirts or Red Shirts, but by underground forces, and if they do not operate underground, they will all be arrested. Therefore, some underground forces in Thailand are active in other countries, and the Thai government is trying hard to catch them.

They are former King Rama IX.
  • was an American puppet[24]
  • In reality, he was not a very good father.
  • backfire on democracy in thailand[25]
  • Despite being one of the wealthiest royal families, Thailand still does not have a high standard of living overall.
  • Although they say they have power and care for the people , they are criticized for not actively implementing it .

There are many other points of criticism, but most of them are not the actions of the monarch, but rather the actions of the people or politicians, and so former King Rama IX was involved, so it may not be seen as a problem of former King Bhumibol. However, it is argued that it is something that should be criticized for blatantly supporting the return of Thanom Kitika Village in the 1970s, aiding and abetting the Thula (Thammasat Massacre), and not actively taking action to stop the actions of far-right followers. Oliver Stone tried to boycott the Bangkok International Film Festival after he was forced to kneel in front of King Bhumibol, and another person was jailed for six days after posting an image mocking the king's dog. # #(Note Thai language)[26] Of course, it is not an incident that King Rama IX was directly involved in, but it means that the Thai royal family has been greatly deified and made absolute. Also, the reality is that people are made to think that the king himself leaves alone citizens he does not like. Of course, there was incorrect information, but reporter Joo Seong-ha once received an official letter of protest from the Thai embassy because he posted a blog post saying that Thailand had a similar situation to North Korea. #

As will be described later, the successor training failed. King Rama X did not dethrone the crown prince, despite the fact that even pre-modern royalty would have dared to perform eccentricities during his time as crown prince, and eventually ascended the throne.[27]

6. personal aspect

He was born in the United States and loved jazz music while studying in Switzerland . He worked as a saxophone and clarinetist , boasting his musical talent and even released an album. He composed more than 50 jazz standard-style songs and showed off his passion for jazz by going to New York in the 1960s and performing with Benny Goodman, a legendary clarinetist of the swing era. In addition, he is fluent in five languages, including Thai , English , French , German , and Sanskrit , and has translated English books into Thai by hand. He is also a photographer who holds regular photo exhibitions. That is why the fact that he always carried a camera, even during royal projects, is often depicted as an icon of his youth. And when I was young, I even won a sailing competition.

According to the American business magazine Forbes , his fortune in 2008 was $35 billion, ranking him first among the world's monarchs. 2nd place is United Arab Emirates King Khalifa of Abu Dhabi (USD 23 billion) is ranked 3rd, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia is ranked 3rd (USD 21 billion), King Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei is ranked 4th (USD 20 billion), and the United Arab Emirates is ranked 5th. King Muhammad of Dubai ($18 billion) was ranked 6th, Archduke Hans Adam II of Liechtenstein ($5 billion), 9th was Archduke Albert II of Monaco ($1.4 billion), and 14th was Queen Elizabeth II of England ($650 million). It is said that the reason King Rama IX's wealth soared and was able to take first place was because real estate owned or nominally owned by the Thai royal family in Bangkok and other places was disclosed, and the new count increased by about seven times the previous year's estimate.[28] This is also one of the reasons why products from banks and cement companies owned by the King are intensively used.

The reason why he was able to accumulate wealth to this extent is based on Thai law, which states that foreigners cannot acquire more than 49% ownership of any business in Thailand and cannot own real estate other than for business purposes. For this reason, foreign capital has no choice but to join hands with Thai locals to do business, and the most trustworthy partner is the King of Thailand. Because of this, the royal family makes money by swimming on land. In addition, oil refineries, department stores, railroads, paints, etc. are virtually monopolies of the royal family.

I once had a meeting with South Korean President Park Chung- hee. President Park Chung-hee was so excited to see Queen Sirikit, a great beauty, that he drank a lot of alcohol at a banquet hall. To this, the first lady Mrs. Yuk Young -soo warned her to stop drinking, and she even worried the Thai foreign minister. However, Park Chung-hee did not stop drinking, and when it was Park Chung-hee's turn to speak, everyone looked at Park Chung-hee with nervous eyes, fearing that he might be drunk, but fortunately, Park Chung-hee finished his speech without any hint of drunkenness. However, he returned to his seat and said that he had another drink. Below is Dongwon It is the report of the Minister of Foreign Affairs .
This is an anecdote from February 1966, when he visited Thailand with President Park Chung-hee when he was Minister of Foreign Affairs and was invited to a welcome dinner by the King of Thailand. Thailand's Royal Family's 'Bumi Ball'[29] The King and Queen Sirikit were a young couple in their 30s at the time. In particular, Queen Sirikit is an American <Light>[30] She was known as a world-renowned beauty, having even appeared as a magazine cover model. Apparently, President Park’s expression that day was unusual. Queen Sirikit sat next to him, as was custom, and he seemed even more encouraged by the atmosphere. A cocktail reception usually ends with just raising a glass to one's mouth. However, President Park drank it all in one gulp as recommended that day. He also continued to recommend it to Queen Sirikit next to him, clinking glasses together, and taking another sip... Not much time had passed, but he had already drunk more than twice his usual amount.

Deep down, I was worried about what would happen if I made a mistake, but sure enough, glares flew from Mrs. Yuk, who was sitting next to the king. She was looking to say something.

“Your Excellency, you seem to be eating too much today.”

"is it."

However, it was a warning to the deaf ears. He emptied the glass he was holding and poured another glass into it as if to refute my words. It was like someone who had never had a drink in his life. Suddenly, his right ear felt hot, and when he turned around, only his nose was traumatized.

"Minister Lee, I've been watching President Park since a while ago. I've served a foreign head of state as foreign minister, but this is the first time I've ever had someone drink so much. I'm not sure if I'm mistaken, but I'm worried about when I'll collapse."

When it was time for the dinner speech, after the Thai King's welcome speech, it was President Park's turn to make a field trip. The eyes of all the domestic and foreign guests invited that day were all focused on one place. Hidden in her eyes was the question of whether President Park would be able to stand up without falling down, or how many steps she would be able to walk. Finally, as if answering his curiosity, President Park pressed the table and stood up. However, contrary to the aspirations of many eyes, he walked up to the podium in an undisturbed posture. Then, with a clear voice, he returned to his well-groomed body, sat down, and drank from the glass in front of him.

King Rama IV reinforced the 126th year before he died at the age of 88 on October 13, 2016, which was the longest reign of the Thai kings and the second longest reign of the surviving monarchs in the 21st century .

In 2006 , the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne, a grand event was held nationally to celebrate it. First of all, yellow T-shirts and wristbands with the phrase ‘May your Majesty live long live’ were sold like crazy all over Thailand, about 8,400 monks prayed for King Rama IX, and two days before his birthday, political parties decided to suspend political strife for a week. The National Assembly also designated June 9th as a national holiday to warm up the atmosphere, and on this day, kings, queens, crown princes, and royal families from 24 monarchies around the world attended a royal banquet, creating a spectacle rarely seen in history.

In 2016, the 70th anniversary of his accession, a national celebration was held to commemorate this. Starting with the completion ceremony for irrigation facilities in Ratchaburi Province , Thailand, which was promoted by the King, the Central Bank of Thailand issued 70 baht commemorative currency to commemorate the 70th anniversary of his reign. He performed almsgiving with 770 people. #

Considering the fact that no king has held the throne for this long in all of Thailand's previous dynasties, a history book has been written.

As Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn is Bhumibol's only son , there was a high possibility that he would become the next king for a long time, but his mood swings were severe.[32] There was a series of scandals in his private life, including repeated marriages and divorces, and he was married to Queen Sirikit for 60 years.[33] Compared to Bhumibol, it has a very poor reputation. It's a shame that Thailand was a country where legitimate criticism of the king and royal family was difficult, but if there was an anomaly like Vajiralongkorn (Rama It might have happened. Many high-ranking Thai people have been campaigning against the crown prince's succession to the throne for decades, and at the same time, there are even voices calling for the crown prince's younger sister, Princess Chakri Sirinthon, to be crowned queen . However, there is a problem even if this happens, Princess Sirinton is unmarried and has no children to succeed her throne. Because of this, there was a prospect that even if the crown prince was not crowned and Princess Sirin Thon succeeded to her throne, Sirin Thon would again be succeeded by the unpopular child of the crown prince.[34]

However, since the prince has children and one son who is a legitimate successor, the succession is pushed back. Originally, there were five sons to the prince, but four people from the second wife had no inheritance because they went to England. The current successor is the son of the third wife. In detail, the Prince Wachi Lalong braided four times (divorce), who was divorced, one daughter, four sons and one daughter, and the last prince.[35] I got a son from Sri Rasumi. There is no child yet with the current queen. For reference, the second wife's children went to England with their mother, except for one daughter who returned to Thailand. What is certain at this time is that the second wife went to London before legally divorced , and later the prince went to London and brought her daughter.

Of course, this is the content that comes and goes from abroad, and it is still kept quiet in Thailand.

According to WikiLeaks , King Rama IX suffers from Parkinson's disease and depression , and the heir to the throne, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, suffers from incurable blood-related diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis C, so there is even talk that the crown prince's sisters are aiming for the right to succeed to the throne. In the midst of this , the Thai royal family was expected to be cut off, and Crown Princess Srirasmi divorced the crown prince on December 13, 2014 due to a large-scale corruption scandal involving her own family, and the future of the crown prince born to them was expected to become uncertain. Article: But both the king and the crown prince are old.[36] It appears that there is no longer any intention to change the crown prince .

Ahead of the general elections in March 2019, Princess Ubonrat Ratchakanya, the older sister of King Rama # However, Princess Ubon Rat's candidacy was withdrawn after King Vajilal Longkorn expressed his opposition to her sister's candidacy for prime minister. #

9. monument

It is a common sight in Thai streets, government offices, schools, hospitals, etc. A monument is created for King Rama IX or a member of the royal family with a huge portrait.

A destroyer of the Thai Navy was named the Bhumibol Adulyadej class . Excluding Thailand's aircraft carrier Chakri Naruebet and amphibious ships, it is the main force of the Thai Navy with the largest displacement. The first ship, HTMS Bhumibol Yadulyadej, was built by Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering , launched in 2017, and delivered to the Royal Thai Navy in 2018. The ship number is DDG-471.

[1] Son of King Rama V.[2] She is also the 5th cousin of King Rama IX. Rama IX's grandfather Rama V is Sirikit's great-grandfather. According to royal documents, he died of sepsis at 9pm on October 24, 2025, local Thai time. Thai F1 driver Alexander Albon paid tribute to her through his Instagram story.[3] degree in physics[4] She ascended the throne 5 years and 6 months before Queen Elizabeth II and died about 6 years before her.[5] If this is violated, it is possible to be officially punished by applying the crime of insult to the royal family . If you crumple up banknotes with the faces of the royal family engraved on them, you may receive a warning from the police or citizens, and any act of scribbling, throwing, or intentionally damaging money is subject to punishment. Some even iron and straighten out crumpled money before storing it. This law applies to foreigners without exception. For example, it is said that a Korean businessman threw Thai currency out of anger after an argument with Thai people (!). He reported this and was imprisoned in a detention center on charges of insulting the royal family.[6] As a member of the royal family, she had to consult with King Rama VII, her uncle, to come up with a good name , so at the time of her birth, on her U.S. birth certificate, her name was written only as 'Baby Songkhla', which was her surname. The name bestowed by the king was ‘Bhumipon Aduyadeji’, which means ‘power of the earth, unparalleled power’ in Sanskrit.[7] Around this time, in 1934, I received my first camera as a gift, and from then on, I had a lifelong attachment to cameras and photography. It is said that he first fell in love with jazz and saxophone in Switzerland.[8] As for King Rama VIII's death, it was initially thought to be an accidental accident, but the investigation committee officially ruled it a homicide rather than an accident or suicide. It ended with King Rama IX rejecting the pardon requests of three royal servants and having them executed by firing squad in 1955 on charges of regicide. There is controversy that Prince Bhumibol accidentally shot and killed his brother while playing with a gun, but it is a taboo topic in Thai society because it is so sensitive.[9] Regent Ransit, in the name of King Rama IX, approved the military coup that overthrew the Tawan Thamrongnawasawat government in November 1947, and also signed the new constitution of 1949, which restored much of the royal authority lost in the Siamese Revolution of 1932. In 1948, the King's Asset Control Strengthening Act was passed, reclaiming many of the royal properties that had been nationalized by the People's Party in 1932.[10] Sirikit is also a member of the Thai royal family. King Rama IX is the grandson of King Rama V Chulalongkorn , and Sirikit is the great-granddaughter of King Rama V. In Korean style, it is a dangsuk-dangjilnyeo relationship.[11] The injury was so serious that King Rama VIII's funeral and his own coronation, which were to be officiated by the King himself, had to be postponed.[12] This coronation ceremony was also the first king coronation held since Thailand converted to a constitutional monarchy during the reign of King Rama VII . This is because King Rama VIII died too early and could not hold a proper coronation ceremony.[13] In the 1980s, Thailand enjoyed an unprecedented economic boom with an annual average growth of close to 10%, and at this time, the emerging capitalist class grew and the desire for democratization reached its peak. Moreover, even General Tinnasulanon voluntarily stepped down, saying that his role was over, allowing civilian politicians to come to the forefront.[14] This time, farmers and common people supporting Thaksin exploded against the Democratic Party, which came to power thanks to the judiciary despite losing the election. When they occupied the center of Bangkok and staged a protest, the Democratic Party violently suppressed them, and as many as 90 citizens died. The Democratic Party regime, which suffered a fatal blow to its morality as a result, held general elections in July 2011 to appease public sentiment.[15] It was the 12th coup since the Siam Revolution in 1932.[16] The 500 seats in the House of Representatives are elected by the people, but the military appoints 100% of the 250 seats in the Senate. To become prime minister, you must receive a majority of 376 votes out of a total of 750 seats in the Senate and House of Representatives, but the military is already getting 250 votes before it even starts. Prayut Chan-o-cha, who actually carried out the coup, also ran as a civilian in the 2019 general election and swept the Senate votes, becoming prime minister legally.[17] This continued after the death of King Rama IX and during the reign of King Rama X. When the Action Forward Party, which called for military reform , became the largest party in the National Assembly in the 2023 general election, it was forcibly dissolved by the Constitutional Court, and prime ministers who offended the royal family and military, such as Seta Tawisin and Patongtan Shinawatra , were dismissed one after another.[18] A Thai soldier and former prime minister, he was one of the leading figures behind the scenes of Thai politics until his death from old age in 2019.[19] The article misspelled the name of the Privy Councilor as 'Tinsulanonda'.[20] It is also an official ritual for the prime minister and ministers to prostrate themselves and bow to the king's portrait when a new cabinet is inaugurated.[21] It means the king of the law in Pali . It refers to the ideal king who defends illegality and rule with it. Since the 13th century, when the Buddhism became the mainstream religion of Thailand, the king of the Thai dynasty leaned on the image of 'Damma Raja'.[22] However, it is difficult to accept that Pumi Phone has developed and developed cloud seeds.[23] Of course, there is a role as a symbol of the monarchy of the constitutional monarchy, so if you play this role well, it may be the title of Myeong -gun and Seong -gun . It is rarely called in that way. However, there is only one case where democracy can be achieved and the title of the Seonggun can be received, which is the case that the king himself achieves or at least accommodates democratization . The king of Bhutan , the king of Sigme Kesar, is an example. As a monarch, he has made a tremendous achievement, which is the case that the general army is right and at the same time protects democracy.[24] It is said that such a tendency was clearly visible during the Cold War. Although Thailand is still a pro-American country, there is room to think about the situation at the time. In 2020, with the formation of the Anti -China Milk Tea Alliance , Thai monarchists are showing strong anti-American tendencies. This goes to the extent of claiming that the United States is behind the Thai democracy movement in front of the U.S. Embassy in Thailand .[25] In addition to the above-mentioned neglect or support of the coup, Thailand actually has a provision in Article 112 of the Criminal Code that prohibits criticizing the king or royal family. Violation of this can result in up to 15 years in prison.[26] This article is a blog run by Thai underground forces.[27] Of course, keep in mind that the position of successor is a position that is difficult to replace unless you make a truly unanswerable mistake. Charles III also firmly maintained his position as successor for 70 years, despite great criticism, and eventually ascended to the throne. In addition, Charles III is the eldest of three sons and one daughter, but King Rama X is the eldest of one son and three daughters and the only son. In the case of England, Charles III was the queen's son, and although there was little social resistance to the queen's accession to the throne, to the extent that an absolute eldest-born inheritance system is currently enforced by royal law, Charles III was able to firmly maintain his position as crown prince because he was the eldest son at the time according to the principle of primogeniture at the time. In comparison, the Thai royal family did not make it impossible for a princess to succeed, and although the king could have influence in appointing a successor, in practice it adopted a primogeniture system that gave priority to sons, and the queen's ascension to the throne itself was unprecedented, and conservative opposition to a woman's ascension to the throne was extreme.[28] Of course, in reality, the King of Saudi Arabia ranks first by far. Considering the size of Aramco, which is Saudi Arabia 's state-owned company but is in fact treated as the royal family's private company , the King of Thailand cannot even present a business card.[29] You may wonder because it is different from 'Bhumiphone'. Thai character transcription has a deep notation , so there are many cases that do not match actual Thai pronunciation . read The Romanization is known as 'Bhumibol' based on the former, so it was translated into Korean and became 'Bhumibol'. Today, Hangeul transcription of Thai language is based on pronunciation, so it is 'Bhumiphon'.[30] Suspected as a typo in Life magazine. Queen Sirikit once appeared as a model for Life magazine on January 12, 1962.[31] As mentioned above, King Rama IX was fluent in English after studying abroad, so there was no need for an interpreter during the meeting with Queen Elizabeth II. Coincidentally, both King Rama IX and Queen Elizabeth II have something in common: they both died on the 70th anniversary of their reigns .[32] This isn't just about having an impatient personality. To put it simply, there was a precedent for a truly serious accident in diplomacy with Japan . During his visit to Japan , he requested that his mistress be treated as a state guest, but when the Japanese government refused, he resorted to all sorts of vicious acts and had his driver replaced several times. Later, when an envoy from Japan arrived, he even mobilized five F-5 fighter jets , including one flown by the Crown Prince himself, to block the plane carrying the Japanese envoy from entering the Thai airport. Japan is also a constitutional monarchy with a monarch, but it was equally despised because the monarch or royal family had never had such an incident. Even the damn Fumihito family did not commit diplomatic disrespect towards other countries.[33] Officially, Queen Sirikit and King Rama IX were married, but that does not mean that the couple had a good relationship. Although it is closer to the queen's problem than King Bhumibol's own problem, there is talk that they have been separated for over 40 years, and Queen Sirikit's open affair is also a problem. In fact, this is a topic that can never be mentioned in Thailand because it involves the issue of the princesses' birth. It is unknown whether this is the reason, but the royal family, including the queen, supports the prince's succession to the throne.[34] The King's eldest child, Princess Ubonrat, is married to American citizen Peter Redd Jensen, so her children have no succession rights.[35] The current wife, Sumida Wachi Wachi Lalon Bra, married after the king and married and became a queen.[36] Rama X alone was 64 years old when he ascended the throne.
