2. career

He comes from a prominent family in Pangasinan. He is of Chinese mestizo descent, a mixture of Spanish and Chinese .

In June 1950, right after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy, not long after having one kidney removed due to tuberculosis, he volunteered to participate in the Korean War and was deployed to the front line in January 1952. He was deployed to Gangwon-do in May of that year . Syngman Rhee distinguished himself in the battle against the Chinese People's Volunteer Army at 'Eerie Hill' in Cheorwon-gun . He also received a unit commendation from the President of the Republic of Korea . After that, he also participated in the Vietnam War , Philippine Army. He is a former soldier and politician who was promoted to captain . Although he was the 6th cousin of the 10th President Ferdinand Marcos , he participated in the popular uprising to overthrow Marcos' dictatorship .

In 1986, when the Korasson Akino became president, he was promoted to the Army Chief of Staff. Fidel Ramos himself was also elected president in 1992 as a presidential candidate for the Democratic Party . After the election, he legalized the Philippine Communist Party and pardoned rebels such as the room front to establish a foothold for ideological/ethnic disputes. It also revived the abolished death penalty.

However, the Asian financial crisis of 1997 occurred at the end of his tenure, and he was slightly hit.

Since then, he has served as Ambassador to the Filipino under the Rodrigo Duterte government. Politically, he criticized Duterte's war against drugs and supported him.

In March 2022, a library named after him opened online. And on July 31 of the same year, he died of complications from COVID-19, heart disease and dementia. His nephew, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. , expressed condolences and declared a period of national mourning until August 9.

3. digression

  • In the Philippines, he is evaluated as a person with both political acumen and practical skills. He continued his military career with the support of his own family, the Ramos family, and the Marcos family of his 6th cousin, Ferdinand Marcos . He was promoted without hesitation due to his outstanding ability. In the 1980s, when the democratization craze was in full swing in the Philippines, a member of the Marcos family and a military captain helped the democratization movement and created turbulence within the Philippines.[1] He joined hands with the Aquino family, and as a result, democratization was successful, and he emerged from a member of the Marcos family as a big name in the Philippines. After Corazon Aquino, he ascended to the position of President of the Philippines. Afterwards, the performance of the President was evaluated as high, except for the foreign exchange crisis at the end of his term. I received it. Even after leaving office, he had a good relationship with the Aquino family and the Duterte family and spent his last years without any major problems. Although he was the top family in the Philippines, such as the Marcos family, the Aquino family, and the Duterte family, he lived without any problems despite the opposing families. He is a great person in that he maintained his friendship.[2]

[1] It can be seen as similar to Korea's Roh Tae-woo, but it is not completely the same, as there were deaths due to violent suppression of protests and torture until the end of Roh Tae-woo's term.[2] The story of three families is a bloody one in modern Philippine history. Leaders of dictatorships, leaders of the democracy movement, and problematic figures in 21st century Philippines have come from these families, and in fact, these families are the ones who competed for the presidency of the Philippines.
