1. outline
Colombia 's head of state. He adopts the presidential system and serves a single four-year term. The inauguration of the President of Colombia is on August 7, the same day that Simon Bolivar won the Battle of Boyaca on August 7, 1819 .
2. Term and election
The President of Colombia is elected through direct elections . Any Colombian citizen over the age of 30 can run for president. If a candidate receives a majority of votes by adopting a runoff voting system, that candidate is elected; if no candidate receives a majority of votes, the top two candidates in the first round advance to the runoff . Also, a vice presidential candidate can run as a running mate.
The term of office for the Colombian president was specified to be six years in 1886. However, starting in 1910, the term was shortened to a single four-year term, and if the president passed away during his term, the Colombian vice president could succeed to the presidency. The Colombian President's term lasted for a single four-year term from 1910 to 2005, but under the 31st President, Álvaro Uribe, the term limit was changed from a single four-year term to a multiple four-year term. Uribe served until 2010, and the 32nd President, Juan Manuel Santos, also served for eight years until 2018. In 2015, during the second term of Juan Manuel Santos' administration, the presidential term was returned to a single four-year term.
