He is the head of state of Kazakhstan . The current president is Kassym-Jomart Tokayev .

2. term of office

In the past, the president's term of office changed several times, going back and forth between a 5-year reappointment system and a 7-year reappointment system. This is because, after Nursultan Nazarbayev first came to power, he voluntarily amended the constitution to remove the limit on reappointment for the first president or used tricks to extend the term of office through a national referendum, which Nazarbayev did in 2019 . This continued until his resignation on March 20 .

2019 The second president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, was inaugurated on March 20 , and will be elected in 2022. In the constitutional amendment passed in September , the term of office was changed to a single seven-year term.
