1. outline

He is the head of state and executive branch of Turkiye . The current president is Recep Tayyip Erdogan .

Since the founding of the Republic, the parliamentary system has been adopted, and the president has played only a symbolic role as the head of state.[1] , After Erdogan introduced the direct presidential system and was elected president, the president's practical authority began to grow, and in 2017, the president's authority was greatly increased with the amendment to the presidential system .

In the past, when he was a symbolic head of state, he was obliged to be independent.[2] Not now.

First of all, “officially ” the term is 5 years, and re-election is possible. However, since the incumbent Erdogan succeeded in his third term , it is unclear whether he will become like Putin.

Erdogan's term ends on July 9, 2028.

[1] However, in 1923 Since the founding of the country on October 29 , 1950 Until May 22, during the period when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and Ismet Inönü were presidents, the Republican People's Party had a one-party system, and the presidents at the time served as party leaders, and in effect, it was close to a two-party system in which a cabinet prime minister and a president with strong authority coexisted. The president's authority was strong. 1950 It is not until President Jelal Bayar takes office on May 22 that he becomes a fully symbolic head of state.[2] Erdogan, who became president in 2014, also temporarily left the Justice and Development Party because of this.
