Lee Hee-ho (far right) while attending Ewha Girls' High School in 1939
The eldest daughter among six sons and two daughters and the fourth born in Gyeongseong during the Japanese colonial period He was born in Susong-dong . His father, Yong- gi Lee , was the 4th person to obtain a medical license in Korea. He graduated from Severance Medical School, the predecessor of Yonsei University College of Medicine, and worked in Jeollabuk-do. Director of Namwon City Provincial Hospital, Gyeonggi Province He grew up in a very wealthy family, including serving as the director of Pocheon County Provincial Hospital. His mother , Lee Soon- i of the Yeonan Lee clan , was born into a family of oriental medicine doctors and was a devout Methodist believer.[6] Under its influence, I came to have a maternal faith .

Following her mother's wishes that "girls should also study a lot," she graduated from Seosan Public Elementary School (currently Seosan Elementary School ), then moved to Seoul and entered Ewha Girls' High School (the predecessor of Ewha Girls' High School) in 1936. It is said that he was an icon of leading by example, serving as class president while attending elementary school . When I was 18, my mother died and I was greatly shocked.

After thinking about women's lives and what path is right for me as a woman, I decided on three things. The first was 'don't get married.'[7] , the second was 'Be healthy', and the third was 'Study hard'.[8] To continue her studies, she entered the liberal arts department of Ewha Women's College (the predecessor of Ewha Womans University) in 1942.

However, due to Japan's educational emergency measures in 1944, he was liberated without graduating from Ewha Womans University. # At this time, Chungcheongnam-do In Yesan County, she worked as an instructor at a female youth training center. In September 1946, she re-entered Seoul National University's College of Education, where she majored in English literature. During her sophomore year, she switched majors and earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1950, just before the outbreak of the Korean War . When she was a student at Seoul National University, like many young people at the time, she joined the Joseon National Youth League , founded by Lee Beom-seok , a former member of the liberation army.

During the Japanese colonial period , women received an incredibly high level of education, but in 1943, the number of students receiving higher education was 5,504, of which only 1,255 were female. According to 1944 data, among the approximately 12.6 million women living in Joseon, approximately 3,600 women received higher education, or the top 0.02% .

Although she received narrow-minded attention because she was a female student during her time at Seoul National University, she had a lively personality and served as the representative of the College of Education for the student council and vice-president of the College of Education's student protection group. Because she was extremely active, interested in the women's movement , and tried to break away from the traditional image of women, she was known as 'Das' at school.[9] It was also called by the nickname.

When he told his classmates his name, he introduced it tactfully by saying, "I laugh out loud and say 'Hee-hee-ho-ho,' so my name is 'Hee-ho'."[10] She was very interested in social participation movements and actively participated in plays . In her first year of college, she performed a play called <Foolish>, in which she wrote the screenplay, played the lead role, and even directed it. She says she has always been the outgoing type, taking on all kinds of funny roles.

After graduating from college, the Korean War broke out, and Lee Tae-young was on his way to refuge.[11] She actively participated in the women's movement with first-generation feminists such as Kim Jeong-rye . In 1950, she founded the Korean Women's Youth Corps, and in 1952, she founded the Women's Issues Research Institute. The Women's Issues Research Institute later changed its name to the Women's Issues Research Association, and she served as its second president from 1964 to 1971.

Around the time she was active in the Korean Women's Youth Corps, her fate with Kim Dae-jung , her future husband and life partner, began. In order to evacuate refugees from the January 4 retreat by ship , we received help from the president of a shipping company in Incheon, and that president was Kim Dae-jung. Afterwards, when Kim Dae-jung moved his business base to Busan , he had a meeting with executives of the Korean Women's Youth Group, and it was at this time that the two met for the first time.

In addition, at the time, she led the Myeonhak Dongjihoe (Myeonwoohoe), a former college student club in the Seoul area, and Kim Dae-jung intermittently attended this meeting and became a friend. However, they started dating in earnest with Gye Hoon-je , the student council president of Seoul National University's College of Arts and Sciences at the time , and it is said that they even considered marriage. Lee Hee-ho's Autobiography Accompanying However, Gye Hoon- je contracted tuberculosis.[12] Lee Hee-ho had a choice to study abroad, so after much deliberation, he chose to study abroad and left for the United States. At this time, the feeling of regret for Gyehunje and guilt for not caring for the sick did not go away for a long time.

It is said that he received support from the American Methodist Church while studying in the United States, but due to lack of living expenses, he worked at a factory to earn tuition. He returned to the United States in 1958 after earning a bachelor's degree in sociology from Lambeth University and a master's degree from Scaritt College, where he conducted field research on the problems of discriminated black communities.

After returning to Korea, his alma mater, Ewha Womans University, She served as a lecturer in the Department of Social Work, and later served as secretary of the Institute for Women's Issues, secretary of the YWCA Association, and board member of the Korean Women's Organization Council, marking the early days of the Korean women's movement.

A wedding photo taken at the home of Lee Hee-ho's maternal uncle, Lee Won-soon.[13]
While she was actively working as a women's activist, she married Kim Dae-jung on May 10, 1962 .[14][15] For Kim Dae-jung, it was her second wife, that is, a remarriage. Kim Dae-jung's first wife, Cha Cha-ae, died in 1959.[16][17][18] She gave birth to Kim Hong-geol , one of former President Kim Dae-jung's three sons, at the age of 41, an old age at the time . Of her three sons, the eldest and second sons are from her ex-wife.

When she married Kim Dae -jung, a two -year -old younger, the female seniors were tired of being too wasteful. The YWCA seniors shed tears and asked why (Lee Hee -ho's) precious life (Kim Dae -jung's) shabby life. Later she asked why she married Kim Dae -jung and replied, " You're handsome ."[19]

Kim Dae-jung, who was an opposition figure at the time, had to give up his women's movement activities due to political oppression from the military . Instead, it is known that she spent her life as a comrade in her husband's long-term prison, internal affairs, and struggle for democratization, and was the president's closest critic and advisor. After her husband Kim Dae-jung took office as president, despite her advanced age in her late 70s, she actively engaged in activities such as welfare for the underprivileged and policy monitoring. Without losing her youthful intention to contribute to the advancement of women's rights, she helped her husband 's policy pledges include measures for women who tend to be excluded from political attention, which led to the launch of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family following the launch of the People's Government .

Visited North Korea to pay condolences to Kim Jong-il, who died in 2011.
Lee Hee-ho comforting Kim Jong-un
December 2011 Kim Jong-il There was controversy over his visit to North Korea to pay condolences at the time of his death , and he explained that it was a return visit to North Korea's dispatch of condolences at the time of President Kim Dae-jung's death. Hyunjeong was with her at the time. The chairman of Hyundai Group accompanied her, and they both had something in common: they both came from North Korea to pay condolences when their husbands died .

After the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit, also known as the Panmunjom Summit, concluded in 2018 during the Moon Jae-in administration , she She expressed her wish for the former president to receive the Nobel Peace Prize . In response to this, former President Moon Jae-in at the time responded that the Nobel Prize should be handed over to former US President Donald Trump and that South Korea only needs to achieve peace .

In conclusion, her good wishes did not come true, and inter-Korean relations, which had temporarily entered a reconciliation mood through the inter-Korean summit, cooled sharply in the 2020s after her death, starting with the bombing of the inter-Korean joint liaison office . Looking back on her actions, which she hoped for peace between North and South Korea together with her husband, former President Kim Dae-jung, it is a sad story in many ways.

Severance Hospital funeral home[20]
On June 10, 2019, at 11:37 PM, he passed away at the age of 96 at Sinchon Severance Hospital . As for the cause of his death, there was a rumor that he was suffering from liver cancer , but his family stated that he died from old age and not from a specific disease.
I would like to thank all the people who have loved my husband Kim Dae-jung and me so far. I hope that the people will love each other, live in harmony, and live happily. I will go to heaven and pray for our people and for the peaceful unification of the nation. Also, please use the Donggyo-dong private residence as a memorial hall for the president, and use the Nobel Peace Prize fund as a fund for the president's memorial project.[21]
In her will , she left the words, " I will pray for the peaceful unification of the people and nation in heaven ." Her burial was at the gravesite of former President Kim Dae-jung at the Seoul National Cemetery .

Among the spouses of presidents from the 6th Republic of Korea, he was the first to die. Among the six former presidents' spouses, Roh Tae-woo 's wife Kim Ok-sook , Roh Moo-hyun 's wife Kwon Yang-sook , Lee Myung-bak 's wife Kim Yun-ok , Moon Jae-in's wife Kim Jeong- sook , and Yoon Seok-yeol 's wife Kim Geon-hee are alive, and Chun Doo-hwan 's wife Lee Soon - ja, the spouse of the president during the Fifth Republic of Korea, is also alive. Among these, Kim Young-sam 's wife, Son Myeong-sun , was not the only deceased as she died in March 2024. As an aside, Park Geun-hye is single.

4. evaluation

4.1. Positive

  • A man who had ruined his life after failing to run for office once and losing three times , and who had two children, was wooing her with passionate rhetoric.[22] Not only did she agree, she endured financial hardship, the imprisonment of her husband, and the inspections and oppression that extended to her children, and she remained a lifelong companion and good friend.[23] I have accumulated virtues that play the same role.[24] In fact, when Kim Dae-jung proposed to her, she said, "For him, politics was a way to achieve his dreams and a reason for existence, but for me, it was one of the ways to create a harmonious society with gender equality. Rather than the passionate love between a man and a woman, trust in the dreams we shared was the bond that tied him and me together."[25] He said he thought so.
  • Kim Dae -jung, who was uncomfortable with his legs due to a traffic accident , did not do his health care properly, like Kim Young -sam , and sometimes swims or a little . It is impossible without special and dedicated help from the side.
  • When DJ, who was trying to make a comeback after losing in the 14th presidential election in 1992, decided to return to politics, he opposed it so much that he scolded his work- from -home secretary Jang Seong-min , saying, "Why don't you stop the baby's father? " When trying to frame them as "liars" with this sharp criticism, they defended it with an external statement saying, "When the soldiers change the constitution, the people who praised them change their faces and criticize them for saying that the times have passed, so it's really too much to do," to reduce the loss of supporters. He made an effort to let the public know that he was not just a spouse, but also a political comrade.

4.2. denial

Several relatives went up in rumors and became the pretext for the opposition's offensive against the government.
  • Lee Sang -ho (1927-2006), chairman of the younger brother, Democratic Love Association, is the athlete and minor aid[26] He was arrested in 2004 for charges.
  • Next nephew[27] Lee Hyung-taek , who was the executive director of the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation, a public financial institution that manages tens of trillions of won, recorded a recovery rate of only 15% in public funds.[28][29] He was suspected of reckless management and, during the investigation into the Lee Yong-ho Gate, was arrested on charges of pressuring the Industrial Bank of Korea to acquire an insolvent construction company for 25 billion won, treasure hunting by the National Intelligence Service, and stock price manipulation of a venture company, and was sentenced to three years of probation .
  • Another nephew, Lee Hyeong-jak , was suspected of fleeing overseas during the investigation into the expulsion of Gyeonggi Bank, and his wife's nephew, son-in-law, Lee Yun-bok, received the privilege of being appointed as the president of the Seoul branch of Kangwon Land, which was established during the People's Government .
  • In the Kangwon Land main system bidding, Daewoo Information System, whose majority shareholder is Jo Pung-eon, who has drawn attention as the guardian of Kim Hong-gul, his biological son and property manager of the Kim Dae-jung family, won. Jo Pung-eon won 26 military contracts during the Kim Dae-jung administration and was also the owner of Kim Hong-gul's American mansion.

5. faith

As seen in the profile at the top, the religion is Protestant , and the denomination is the Methodist Church . To begin with, both of his parents came from Christian families, and Lee Hee-ho himself was born in the faith and developed his faith passionately from a young age. It is said that he was so devout that he once attended not only Sunday and Wednesday services , but also all weekday services. Baptism was received in 1937 at Jeongdong First Methodist Church, which is located next to Ewha Girls' High School . It is said that the reason he was able to study abroad in the U.S. in the first place was because of the recommendation and support of the U.S. Northern Methodist Church .

After entering Ewha Women's College and beginning her activism as a women's activist, she became so busy that she could not go to church as enthusiastically, but she was still interested in church projects, Sunday school, and summer Bible school, and continued to do church-related work. come. After marrying Kim Dae-jung in 1962 and moving to Donggyo-dong, she began attending Changcheon Church and was an elder at Changcheon Church until just before her death .[30] However, due to old age, he had retired as a serving elder.[31] Changcheon Church had a very deep relationship with her, so much so that she even held a book signing event in 1998 and a book signing event at the time of the publication of her autobiography <Companion> in 2008, and a memorial service was held until the 4th anniversary of former President Kim Dae-jung's death.

It is a well-known fact that her husband Kim Dae-jung's religion was Catholic , and only Kim Hong-gul, born to Lee Hee-ho, is a Protestant who attends Changcheon Church like his mother, and his half-brothers are Catholic like their father. It seems that they were examined at the time of the marriage ceremony . Kim Dae-jung asked his wife Lee Hee-ho and his youngest son Kim Hong-gul to be faithful to their own religious lives, which is a Christian belief in the family. It is considered a good example of agreement and understanding .

When she gave a speech in Japan , it became a hot topic because she used Christian expressions over 60 times, and her funeral was also held in a Protestant style .

6. etc

  • Roh Moo-hyun The former president 's wife , Kwon Yang-sook, was also very close during his lifetime. She was the spouse of the president during the first 10 years of the Democratic Party administration, and the relationship between Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun was very close. This is because her husband passed away around the same time . Because of this connection, Lee Hee-ho sent a handwritten note to the president's grave in Bongha Village, saying, "I feel like half my body is falling apart," which is what Kim Dae -jung said when he heard the news of Roh Moo-hyun's death. Even today, Lee Hee-ho's handwriting is installed at the end of the National Park Stone along with other politicians' handwritten notes. During the second anniversary of former President Roh Moo-hyun's death, I went on a trip to Muando Island and visited Bongha Village often afterwards. Kwon Yang-suk also frequently visited Donggyo-dong, and visited Lee Hee-ho's hospital room a few hours before his death to say his final goodbyes and attended the condolence ceremony and social gathering with (Roh Moo-hyun's) son Roh Geon -ho.
  • On January 4, 2016, Ahn Cheol-soo visited her and had a private meeting for about 20 minutes. The JoongAng Ilbo , which covered this interview, made headlines by saying that Lee Hee-ho gave Ahn Cheol-soo strength by saying, " Become a key player in the change of government !", and Representative Ahn did not deny this. However, Lee Hee-ho's side said that this report was completely unfounded and strongly demanded that JoongAng Ilbo correct the report. Kim Hong-geol, who saw this article, asked her mother, Lee Hee-ho, about the facts, and Lee Hee-ho, who saw the article, was extremely embarrassed and said, "Oh my God." As controversy arose, Ahn Cheol-soo reversed his previous stance and began to avoid giving a direct answer, saying, "I will not say any more as it may cause inconvenience to the lady." Lee Hee-ho's side maintained a strong stance, saying that if JoongAng Ilbo ultimately rejects its request for correction, it will file a complaint with the Press Arbitration Commission to uncover the truth. In the end, Monthly JoongAng released a transcript that it received from Ahn Cheol-soo's side, and it was revealed that in the private meeting, Lee Hee-ho was mostly reticent and that when Representative Ahn Cheol-soo said, "I will definitely change the government in next year's presidential election as long as you are healthy," all he responded was "Do it!" JoongAng Ilbo and Ahn Cheol-soo's side exaggerated Lee Hee-ho's obvious response, and when criticism poured in on Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo and the People's Party , asking, "Why did you carelessly record a private meeting without permission, and why did you even leak it to the press?" Ahn Cheol-soo officially apologized to Lee Hee-ho, saying, "It appears that one of the attendants made the recording inadvertently," and identified the attendant in question. He was dismissed. However, the recorder and the leaker appear to be separate people. It looks like the leaker was never found.
  • On April 20, 2019, her stepson, former lawmaker Kim Hong-il , passed away, but her chronic illness had worsened, so the family decided not to share the news as it was already a dangerous situation.[32] Even though he was a stepson, they lived as one family for nearly 60 years and their relationship was not bad, so it was obvious that if they found out about their son's death, the shock would worsen their chronic illness, and this could even lead to death due to worsening of the chronic illness. I couldn't tell you if I wanted to. In fact, there are quite a few similar cases. In cases where a person's health is at risk due to a worsening chronic disease, it is an unwritten rule that if a family member dies first, the person must keep it a secret from those around him or her in order to prevent sudden death due to deterioration of the condition due to shock .[33]
  • According to the article (JoongAng Ilbo 190609), the condition became serious and the 'Geumgwiwolrae'[34] It is said that former lawmaker Park Ji- won, who said that he will strictly protect the law, hastily returned to Seoul on the night of the 8th (Saturday).
  • His younger brother Lee Sang-ho was arrested for prostitution , but was released because he was 77 years old at the time. In fact, even now in Korean society, if the criminal is old and has not committed a large-scale crime such as murder or civil war, there is a tendency to look after him or her by giving him/her a suspended sentence and releasing him/ her, or even if he/she is sentenced to prison, the punishment is mild compared to the nature of the crime.
  • She is the person who set the record for the longest life among Korean presidential spouses, living an extremely long life and surviving until the age of 96. Born in 1922, she is two years older than Jimmy Carter, who is famous for his longevity. As a bonus, there is also a record of being the oldest presidential spouse in history. After the Park Chung-hee administration, Choi Kyu-ha She is the oldest after Hongki, the former president 's spouse .
  • Not only did right - wing netizens use abusive language to belittle and mock her and her husband during the funeral, causing controversy, but a Seoul National University student who scored perfect on the 2018 college entrance exam was criticized for posting insults on Facebook, including, "The feminist leader is dead."[35]
  • Her portrait as the 15th president's spouse hangs on the wall of the Mugunghwa Room in the main building of the Blue House, which was used as the presidential wife's office and reception room.[36]

[1] She lived the longest among all presidential spouses .[2] Grand Prince Wanchang's 23rd generation descendant, founder's 44th generation descendant Byeong○ (秉○) . ( Genealogy )[3] Kim Dae-jung and Lee Hee-ho Memorial Project Conference[4] 2007 Women's Newspaper[5] He was an elder of Changchun Church before he was alive. More details in the Religion section below.[6] For your information, it is not well known, but my father was also a Protestant.[7] He vowed not to get married, but eventually married Kim Dae -jung in 1962, a distant later, and became a first lady after 36 years. At that time, women were usually married because women were married when they got married. For this reason, the president of the university at that time should be a "single" woman.[8] These are the contents of Lee Hee-ho's autobiography <Accompanying>.[9] In German, it is written as 'das' and acts as a 'neuter article'.[10] This is an excerpt from Kang Won-yong 's book <The Lee Hee-ho I Met>.[11] Korea's first female lawyer .[12] At that time, pulmonary tuberculosis was a serious illness that was not well treated and a fatal disease in which many people lost their lives due to pulmonary tuberculosis. In fact, Gyeokje also surpassed the death of dying due to pulmonary tuberculosis and has been fighting for nine years.[13] The person who sits on the left side of the front row groom is the father of the bride's father, and the person sitting on the right side of the bride is Lee Kang -ho. The second line of the second line is the groom's secretary, Cho Gil -hwan, and the next tie man is the first brother, Kim Dae -hyun, and the youngest sister Kim Dae -hyun is Kim Dae -hyun.[14] For reference, the wedding venue is said to be the home of her maternal uncle, Lee Won-soon , an entrepreneur who completed the process of Korea's IOC membership and served as an advisor for the 1948 London Olympics .[15] She got married at the age of 40, which was extremely late for a woman to get married at that age, especially since it was her first marriage. Nowadays, it is like a nun, a woman who had not married until she was over 60 years old got married. So, there was an anecdote in which former President Kim Dae-jung told his wife that she should be thankful that he saved her old maid, as she joked, but was scolded by her wife.[16] Cha Yong-ae's name on the family register is Cha Yong-soo.[17] In his autobiography (2009 edition) completed before his death, Kim Dae-jung wrote that he was a "soldier who was close to death from overwork." In order to make ends meet due to a series of failed elections , he equipped his home with beauty tools and even ran a beauty salon . He was exposed to a lot of harsh chemicals, which led to his loss. It can be a reliable source as it is an autobiography published in 2009 that honestly dictates the fact that the birth mother was a small woman. #[18] Cha Cha-ae suddenly fell into a coma not long after taking the medicine and died before the doctor called by Kim Dae-jung arrived. In 1980, the Kyunghyang Shinmun , a popular media outlet at the time, reported the sudden death of Cha Cha-ae under the title “We take down Kim Dae-jung, the embodiment of hypocrisy stained with instigation and scheming,” and said that Kim Dae - jung caused Cha Cha-ae to commit suicide by poisoning. This is a representative dark history of the Kyunghyang Shinmun during the Republic era .[19] Most people remember Kim Dae-jung's good-natured and generous appearance, but it is somewhat different from the appearance of a handsome man, but if you look at the photo above, when he was young, he had quite distinct facial features and even spoke well. In the 1960s, Kim Dae-jung was famous as a young politician with a good personality. Kim Dae-jung began to have difficulty moving after suffering serious injuries to his pelvis and legs in a mysterious car accident in 1971. Not only did his mobility become difficult, but his health rapidly deteriorated while he was frequently imprisoned and under house arrest throughout the 70s and 80s, causing him to gain weight.[20] It is said that the portrait is a photo that was personally selected during his lifetime.[21] This will was not realized five years after his death when his biological son, Kim Hong-geol , sold the private residence in Donggyo-dong due to inheritance tax.[22] In fact, even before marriage , he had a crush on Kim Dae-jung, who had a good-looking appearance and a sharp vision and insight worthy of a journalist.[23] In Buddhism , it means a companion who practices together.[24] Of course, if we only mention it like this, she might seem like an elite woman who simply married to devote herself to a man who has a child, is unemployed, and has no real power, but Kim Dae-jung had already been elected in Inje-gun in 1961. In other words, she was a promising political newcomer, and after moving her constituency to Mokpo and being elected three times in a row, it is a bit of an exaggeration to say that she was not a great person. Even at a time when gender discrimination was severe, Kim Dae-jung was famous among feminists for having a fairly balanced view of women. It must have been a difficult decision for an elite woman at the time, but she should not be simply put on the same level as ordinary people.[25] It appears in Lee Hee-ho’s autobiography, “Companion.” #[26] According to media reports, Lee Sang-ho paid 2 million won to a high school girl and had sex with her twice.[27] He is the son of his eldest brother Lee Kang-ho.[28] The unrecoverable amount was 81 trillion won, of which 29 trillion won was the money that was almost taken away due to the Daewoo Group incident. Afterwards, officials began to collect the money, but as it took small steps over 15 years, considering rising prices, debt forgiveness is in fact being carried out at the same time, and Daewoo is holding on, claiming that the remaining 7 trillion won is money that does not have to be repaid.[29] Because of this situation, former Daewoo Group Chairman Kim Woo-jung, who at the time was consistent in his optimism that “the crisis can be overcome by receiving additional loans,” was elected even though Park Geun-hye , who had a close relationship with his father (former Chairman Kim Woo-jung’s father was Park Chung-hee ’s benefactor), was elected. There is still no reason or clue to return.[30] The Korean Methodist Church allows women to serve as elders. Presbyterian Churches vary from denomination to denomination . In denominations that allow the ordination of female pastors, such as the Presbyterian Church of Korea (Hapdong) , the Presbyterian Church of Korea ( Kijang ), etc., female elders are also allowed.[31] Considering that the retirement age for elders is 70, it seems likely that he retired from his position as elder around the 14th presidential election.[32] Unfortunately, about two months after Kim Hong- il's death, Lee Hee-ho himself passed away and was unable to announce the news of his son's death until the end.[33] In fact, when Shin Ki- ha, a member of the Donggyo-dong community , died in a passenger plane crash in 1997, his family deliberately hid the fact, and there was a bad precedent that his elderly mother found out and died after cutting off food and drink.[34] This means that a lawmaker with a constituency in a non-metropolitan area goes down to the constituency on Friday , takes care of the constituency by meeting local residents all weekend, and returns to Seoul on Monday.[35] For your information, Ms. Lee Hee-ho is a graduate of Seoul National University (class of '46), so if we really look at it, she made an outrageous remark to a senior who is 72 years older than her (assuming she was born in '99, her age is 75 years older).[36] Dong-A Ilbo (2022.5.26. Bottom of the culture section article): A piano in front of the president's bedroom, a sauna in the bathroom...Blue Soxal released after 32 years.
