He is the seventh son of the first King Ibn Saud and has the same name as his third brother, Khalid, who died young . His older brother Muhammad stepped down as crown prince and became the next successor, and he ascended to the throne in 1975 when the previous king, King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, was assassinated by his nephew . He died in Taif in 1982 .
