Korean professors , politicians and pro -Japanese national actors .

He is considered a pioneer in Korean studies and ethnic studies by leading the education and research of Korean language and Korean history while avoiding Japanese oppression during the Japanese colonial period.

He is the only Speaker of the House of Councilors in constitutional history.

2. brief history

3. lifetime

On March 9, 1895, Gwansap-dong, Gwan-myeon, Gwaksan-gun, Pyeongan-do (currently North Pyongan-do) Father Baek Yeong-sun (白永淳) in an empty farmhouse in Gwangsan-ri , Gwaksan-gun[12] He was born as the youngest son among two sons and two daughters with his mother, Gyeongju Kim .

In the spring of 1910, I entered Shinsung Middle School in Seoncheon -gun, North Pyongan -do[13] . In 1913, he graduated from Shinsung Middle School , studied in China , and went to Tianjin Theology for three years. In 1916, he went to the United States with the help of a missionary , studied history and theology at Park University and Princeton University . . Yale is the first Korean doctor. He was ordained pastor just before returning home .

After receiving a Ph.D., he received a positive professor at an American university, but he refused to work in his home country. After returning to Korea, he was appointed professor of Yeonhee College (now Yonsei University ) and taught his school. It was once taught at Boseong College .

He also engaged in a variety of activities, including being a director of the Joseon Christian Society, a member of the Korean Language Society, a director of the Korean branch of the British Imperial Society, a promoter of the Diagnostic Society and the Joseon Folklore Society, and a director of the Joseon Christian Youth Association. In particular, he was a member of the Korean Language Society, resisting Japan's policy of destroying the Korean language, and participated as a promoter of the Korean Language Dictionary Compilation Society in October 1929.

In particular, despite being the director of the Literature and Literature and the Director of Yeonhee College, he actively supported Chosun Language, Chosun Studies and Studies such as Jung In -bo , Choi Hyun -bae , and Professor Nam -un, and formally opened Korean language and Korean history at Yeonhee College. I did it. In addition, the Dong -A Ilbo has led the development of national and national science by proposing a kind of library for the Korean national science. After the liberation, the Eastern Research Institute (now National Institute of Korean Studies) continued to study national studies.

Meanwhile, he focused on promoting Korea to the West by actively carrying out international academic and educational activities abroad. In 1931, he was appointed director of the Korean branch of the British Royal Asia Society.

However, during his overseas academic activities, he was involved in a social movement organization, a social movement group, and stayed abroad for a while and was arrested in 1939 shortly after returning home. In September 1942, it was summoned by the Korean Society for Language and Language.

Maeil Shinbo December 6, 1943

After the outbreak of the Pacific War, in 1942, he suddenly became active as a pro- Japanese and anti- nationalist activist , supporting the unity of Korea and Japan , inciting the recruitment of student soldiers , and encouraging shrine worship. In particular, he contributed a great deal to Maeil Shinbo, the newspaper of the Japanese Government General of Korea. He also called the Pacific War a holy war for the liberation of Asians .

On August 22, 1945, he was inaugurated as the head of the Department of Law and Literature at Kyungsung University, the predecessor of Seoul National University, and served as the de facto president of the Department of Economics. He also served as an advisory member of the Joseon Board of Education established by the US military government, and remained as an advisory member even after the Korean Board of Education was reorganized after the establishment of the government. At this time, he worked hard to adopt Hongik Ingan as the ideology of Korean education. In 1946, he was inaugurated as the first president of Yonhee University (now Yonsei University ).

In May 1950 , he served as the 2nd Minister of Education (now the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea ). During his tenure, he established Kyungpook National University , Pusan National University , Chonnam National University , and Chonbuk National University . In November of that year, he was briefly appointed acting Prime Minister, but the confirmation was rejected.

In the 1960 House of Councilors election, he ran as an independent candidate and was elected with the highest number of votes nationwide. Since Yun Bo-seon had not yet been inaugurated as president, he acted as the head of the legislative branch for five days.

After the 5.16 military coup in 1961, he returned from politics to education and served as the honorary president of Yonsei University .

Later, in the 1970s, he joined the anti-Yushin movement and devoted himself to the democratization movement . Representatively, he participated in signing the National Declaration for the Restoration of Democracy in 1974 and also supported opposition party members.

From 1969, he served as an advisor to the National Unification Institute and as a steering committee member of the National Government Advisory Council in 1980, and until his later years, he engaged in a variety of activities across academia, church, society, and international relations. He received honorary doctors from several universities, and was awarded the Republic of Korea National Merit, Rose of Sharon Medal, on Liberation Day in 1970. He died at the age of 90 and was buried in the patriotic cemetery at the National Cemetery with a community funeral.

Yonsei University's main school has his statue. There was also a building called Yongjae -gwan, which was named after him, but was demolished by aging. After the demolition, a management officer was located in 2015, and there is a Yongjae Hall on the first floor of the building. There are 12 houses in the dormitory of the international campus, one of which is Yongjae. It may be reflected that he was the first president of today's name, but his pro -Japanese work has claimed to be demolished because of his pro -Japanese work.[14] It is similar to the controversy that Inchon Kim Sung -soo is receiving at the rival Korea University . There is a statue called Yongjae -san, which is named after Baek Nak -jun, and the winner is appointed as a professor at Yongjae seat. However, Seo Jung -seok, who criticized Baek Nak -jun's pro -Japanese work When the honorary professor of Sungkyunkwan University was selected, it was reversed as a problem .

4. evaluation

Because of his actions at the end of the Japanese colonial period, he was accused of being a representative pro-Japanese faction during the wartime era along with Kim Dong-in , Lee Kwang-soo , Choi Nam - seon , Kim Hwal-ran , Kim Seong-su , Yoo Jin -oh, and Mo Yun-sook .

He also contributed an article discussing Baek Nak-joon's pro-Japanese activities in Yonsei Chunchu , the academic newspaper of Yonsei University . #

One irony is that it was the largest supporter of Jang Joon -ha , an independence activist , unlike his pro -Japanese national actor . In fact, the two were from Shinsung Middle School from Pyongan, the same , so they had a sense of homogeneity . Later, after being closed for ridiculous reasons, ideology, the same was true of Jang Joon -ha 's patent. He also provided a lot of support to the publication. Since the Hancheong Building, which is now in Jongno -gu, where there was a long -time office, was owned by Yonsei University at this time , it was likely to help Baek Nak -joon, the honorary president of Yonsei University, was greatly helped to move in . In the early days, there were many professors of Yonsei University .
