He served as a spokesperson for the Peace Democratic Party during the 13th presidential election in 1987 . However, right after the presidential election, he caused a stir by publishing an article titled 'My Opinion' pointing out that the main reason for the opposition party's defeat was the failure to unify candidates . In the 13th National Assembly election in 1988, he ran for the Jung-gu constituency in Seoul as a candidate for the Peace Democratic Party and was elected. In the same year, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Policy Committee of the Peace and Democratic Party , and was again elected as the Chairman of the Culture and Public Relations Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea . As chairman of the Culture and Public Information Committee, he worked to uncover the truth about the media merger and dismissal of journalists in 1980 through the Fifth Public Hearing .
In 1990, when the Democratic Liberal Party , a huge ruling party , was created through a three-party merger , he advocated a merger with the Little Democratic Party . After the crushing defeat in the 1991 local council elections, he led the 'Political Development Research Association (abbreviated as Jeongbalyeon)', which called for the resignation of President Kim Dae-jung after his second term and the unification of the opposition parties , along with Noh Seung-hwan and Cho Yoon- hyung. In the 1992 14th National Assembly election, he ran as the Democratic Party candidate in Jung -gu, Seoul and was elected, and in the same year , he was elected as a member of the Democratic Party's Supreme Council at the party convention .
In 1995, when Kim Dae-jung returned to politics and founded the New Politics National Congress, he joined. At the time, he formed an alliance with Kim Sang -hyun and sang, "Jeong Dae-cheol as president, Kim Sang-hyun as chairman."[10] There is an anecdote that he did so. He took office as the KBO Commissioner in 1998, but soon resigned after being arrested and indicted for the security bribery incident.[11]
In the 16th National Assembly election in 2000, he ran for office in the same district as a candidate for the New Millennium Democratic Party and was elected, and was re-elected as a member of the Supreme Council at the national convention in August of the same year. He supported Roh Moo- hyun in the New Millennium Democratic Party presidential candidate primary held ahead of the 16th presidential election in 2002 , and served as chairman of the election campaign committee in the presidential election. After winning the presidential election , he was elected as a member of the Supreme Council of the New Millennium Democratic Party in 2003 . Afterwards, his involvement in the Good Morning City Gate was revealed , and his five-year prison sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court in February 2005 . He received a special pardon on Liberation Day in August 2005, but this incident led to his estrangement from the pro-Roh faction.
After that, he passed the district to his eldest son, Jeong Ho-jun , and served as a senior advisor to the Democratic Party , the Democratic United Party , the New Politics Alliance for Democracy , and the Democratic Party of Korea. He left the party in January 2016 and declared his support for the People's Party led by Ahn Cheol-soo . However, the son remained in the Democratic Party of Korea while criticizing his father, but eventually went to the People's Party after being eliminated from the nomination .
Afterwards, he opposed the merger with the Bareun Party and was listed as one of the founders of the Party for Democracy and Peace . As the conflict between the party faction led by Chung Dong-young and the non-party faction centered on Park Jie-won intensified within the Party for Democracy and Peace, efforts were made to achieve harmony within the party, such as presenting an advisory group mediation plan, but as it showed no signs of resolution, he eventually left the party along with Kwon Roh-gap and others on September 20, 2019.

On April 3, 2020, he declared reinstatement to the Democratic Party of Korea together with Donggyo- dong figures , but reinstatement was denied. Rumors of reinstatement also circulated around October, but were rejected, saying, "Please help from outside." # In March 2021, as it was reported that former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol met with influential former Democratic Party politicians and received advice before resigning from his position, there was speculation that he was supporting former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol 's advancement into politics behind the scenes . # On January 13, 2022 , at the request of presidential candidate Lee Jae -myung, he joined the Democratic Party of Korea . At the reinstatement ceremony with former lawmaker Noh-gap Kwon and others , he said, “I will work hard to recreate candidate Lee Jae-myung ’s regime.” #
In 2023, he was elected as president of the Korean Constitutional Association, a group of former National Assembly members . It is said that this is the first time in the history of the Constitutional Council that a person with Democratic leanings has been elected.[12] # . Although it was a relatively advantageous structure as conservative figures were divided, considering that he was elected with more than a majority, it cannot be said that he was elected simply because of the structure.
Later, for the inauguration of the constitutional chairman, the Constitutional Chairman left the Democratic Party due to the principle of preventing the party . Since the 12.3 emergency martial arts, Lee has been highly appreciated by Lee's amendment, demanding a quick amendment, but he also showed a midway move by supporting Han Duk -soo 's candidacy.
3. digression
- He served as the KBO Commissioner , but resigned midway due to the Gyeongseong corruption scandal. Park Yong-oh was appointed as his successor. The chairman of Doosan Group was elected, and this person served as the KBO commissioner for a whopping 7 years.
- He had a broad face and a broad mind, so he was nicknamed " Tofu ". It is said that he took kindly to the teasing from his friends and acquaintances.
- After the May 16 Military Coup, his father, who was the Minister of Foreign Affairs, was dismissed, and Jeong Dae-cheol's family also had to move out of the Foreign Minister's official residence in Jangchung-dong , but Jeong Dae-cheol held on, asking why he had to leave our house. After holding out for three months, Jeong Dae-cheol begged to leave the embassy, but for some reason, the soldiers left him alone until then. Later, after Jeong Dae-cheol was elected to the 9th National Assembly, he met Park Chung-hee , and Park Chung-hee asked, “Are you really the student who refused to leave the Foreign Minister’s residence right after May 16 ?” He is said to have asked and laughed.[13]
- I once pointed out the unfairness of the October Yushin in front of President Park Chung-hee . After being elected to the National Assembly , Jeong Dae-cheol worked in the National Defense Commission and hung out with military-born lawmakers such as Lee Jong-chan , Min Ki-sik , and Choi Kyung- rok . One day, he became involved in a drinking party at the Blue House attended by them and Park Chung-hee .[14] At this meeting, Lee Jong-chan said, “Rep. Jeong Dae-cheol is here too, but the opposition party must be given the freedom to criticize the government,” and Park Chung-hee asked Jeong Dae-cheol what he thought of Yushin . While the attendees were perplexed, Park Chung-hee sat next to Jeong Dae-cheol and asked again what he thought about Yushin. In response, Jeong Dae-cheol pointed out the unfairness of it, saying, “Yusin is doing something wrong for the liberal democracy of this country.” In response to this, Park Chung-hee surprisingly said, "It is natural for an opposition party member to say that. I respect his spirit in saying what he has to say." He is said to have responded calmly, saying,
