A full-length novel published in 1939 by British suspense novel writer Daphne du Maurier . It is the most popular of her novels. By 1965, 3 million copies had been sold and it had been adapted into many films, dramas, radio plays, and musicals. The most famous film adaptation is Alfred Hitchcock 's 1940 film.
The main character, the timid and young 'I'[2] Is married to a rich aristocratic Maxim de Winter, who recently lost his wife .[3] After the honeymoon, 'I', who went to Manduri, the land of the De Winter family, finds that Maxim's ex -wife Rebecca has a great influence on the deacons, servants, and mansions, including Mrs. Maxim and Mrs. Danbus. The process of the secrets hidden after the death of Rebecca and the various events in the process are described from the standpoint of the protagonist.
It is also a book that reflects some of the author's personal experiences. The author's husband, Frederick Browning, had an ex-wife named Jeanne Ricardo, who had dark hair, but the two were said to have been on bad terms. Her Jeanne Ricardo died during her Second World War, but her du Maurier cared about her presence as her ex-wife and often wondered if her husband still loved her. Once upon a time, it is unclear if Browning loved her ex-wife more, but during her marriage, she did cheat on her lover separately.
There are similarities to Jane Eyre . The story is told from the perspective of a first-person narrator who is married to an older man with previous marriage experience, and the man's ex-wife becomes the main source of conflict, and the ex-wife or someone related to her sets fire to the mansion. In fact, Rebecca is a novel influenced by 19th-century British Gothic literature, represented by Jane Eyre, and many of the novels of this era featured women as the main characters and dealt with the dark secrets of the mansion. Jane Eyre is like that, and although the content is different, The Turn of the Screw is a representative 19th century British Gothic mansion novel. It is quite possible that du Maurier was influenced.
It has been a popular novel for a long time since its release, and the same goes for movies, so there was a gothic mansion thriller/horror movie boom for a while. Crimson Peak is an homage to this boom.

The full name Rebecca Thatcher appears only when the teacher calls the attendance to search for the culprit who ripped the book.[2] Unusually, this is a novel in which the main character's name is not revealed until the end. Even when addressed by third parties, she is only referred to as 'Mrs. de Winter' after she marries Maxim.[3] At the time, 'I' was 21 years old and Maxim was 42 years old, so Maxim was 21 years older than me.
