The royal family of Denmark . The official name is Slesby-Holsten-Sönderborg-Glügsborg . The history of the royal family continues through the Gorm Dynasty, Estrid Dynasty , Oldenburg Dynasty , and Glügsburg Dynasty , and is recognized as the oldest royal family in Europe .

Margrethe II, the immediate past queen, is the eldest of three daughters born to King Frederick IX of Denmark and Princess Ingrid of Sweden . As Frederick IX and his wife grew older and the possibility of not having a son increased, they tried to prevent the throne from passing to another relative's family.[2] , worked hard to ensure that his eldest daughter Margrethe ascended to the throne. Influenced by the accession to the throne of the Queen of the Netherlands or England , a new constitutional amendment was made in 1953 that established the principle of primogeniture succession instead of the Salica law and limited the scope of succession to descendants of Christian X, allowing Margrethe to become crown princess .[3] In 2009 , the Act on Succession to the Throne was revised, establishing the principle of absolute eldest son succession regardless of gender.

Margrete II has two sons in 1968 with Prederik III in 1968 and Prince Joachim in 1969.

According to Queen Margrethe II's announcement in September 2022, from January 1, 2023, the four children of her second son, Prince Joachim of Denmark, lost the honorific title of Hans Højhed and the title of Prins/Prinsesse.

On December 31, 2023, Margrethe II announced in her New Year's address that she would abdicate on January 14, the 52nd anniversary of her accession to the throne. Accordingly, on January 14, Frederick X ascended the throne, and Crown Princess Mary became Queen Mary.
