He is the monarch of Monaco and belongs to the Grimaldi family . The current monarch is Albert II, who ascended to the throne in 2005 .
Along with Liechtenstein and the Vatican, it is one of only three countries in Europe where the monarch still plays an active role in daily politics.
According to Monaco's constitution, the throne is based on primogeniture with priority for the son . Before 2002, the throne could only be inherited through a direct line, but adoptive succession was permitted. So, if Albert II had ascended the throne according to this law, Albert II's two sisters would have immediately lost their right to inherit the throne, and for a while there would have been zero heirs to the throne. In 2002, the Constitution was revised and instead of eliminating the adoption of succession, the siblings and their descendants of the incumbent prince also had the right to succession. If no one is qualified to succeed to the throne, a council of regency holds power until a new monarch is elected from among the more distant descendants of the Grimaldi family.
The original tradition was for the flag to be flown from the tower above the palace when the Prince of Monaco was in Monaco, but Albert II preferred to keep his location private, so it was flown regardless of whether he was at the palace or not.
