The current royal family of the Netherlands is the Oranja-Nasau dynasty, and King Willem-Alexander has been in office since 2013.

Nominally, the legislative , executive , and judicial powers belong to the king, so he can exercise his authority as a ruler. Compared to other constitutional monarchy countries, the scope of royal authority is relatively broad. However, national defense-related authority belongs to the government.

Since Queen Wilhelmina, who ascended the throne in 1890, the tradition of the monarch abdicating to her child while still alive has continued. Queen Wilhelmina abdicated in favor of her daughter Juliana in 1948, when she was 68 years old, and Queen Juliana abdicated in favor of her daughter Beatrix in 1980, when she was 71 years old. Queen Beatrix abdicated in favor of her son Willem-Alexander in 2013, when she turned 75 . Willem-Alexander is the first male king to appear in 123 years, but because he has three daughters, if King Willem-Alexander dies or abdicates, there is a high possibility that the Netherlands will return to the era of a queen.
