The history of the Wangchuk Dynasty goes back 115 years. On December 17 , 1907, when the British were under the rule, Ugen Wangchuck, a local lord of Bhutan, announced the establishment of the dynasty, and the dynasty was created. Britain announced the royal dynasty as the only dynasty in Bhutan, and the dynasty was officially recognized, and an absolute monarchy began in Bhutan. Afterwards, Bhutan concluded a treaty with India and entrusted all of its diplomatic rights to India, and in 1949 On August 8th, when the British withdrew, they finally gained complete independence. After the British withdrew, the kings tried to bring happiness to the people of Bhutan. So, even though it was an absolute monarchy, the people did not have any complaints about the dynasty, but rather liked it and lived their lives.

3. Democratization in two generations

Then, in the 2000s, Jigme Singye Wangchuk, the 4th king of the Wangchuk dynasty, was implementing happiness policies that gave happiness to the people, not just living standards, and this included the democratization of Bhutan . However, Bhutan's democratization went through many ups and downs, not because of government oppression but because of public opposition .[1] The people did not want democratization because they supported and liked the king who tried to give them happiness, and even the Bhutanese parliament opposed democratization. However, despite enjoying the highest position of power, Jigme Singye Wangchuk pushed for democratization and ended in 2006. On December 13, he handed over the throne to his son, Jigme Kesar Namgiel Wangchuk, and abdicated. Jigme Kesar Namgiel Wangchuck actively promoted the democratization of Bhutan that his father wanted. Finally in 2008 On March 24 , the general election , the flower of democratization , will be held in Bhutan .

In this way, the democratization of Bhutan, in which the king , not the people of a country , took the initiative to provide true democracy to the people over two generations, is also evaluated as an important part in the history of modern democracy .[2][3]

4. royal family legislation

After the transition to a constitutional monarchy through democratization, laws related to the enthronement of the royal family also emerged.

First of all, the lineage of the king continues through heredity of the eldest son as before, but the king who ascended the throne must step down as soon as he turns 65 years old.

In addition, the king who has been decided on the throne must hold a referendum before the coronation, and the throne is finally confirmed only when more than half of the votes are in favor of the throne.

If the king is tyranny, the people can vote for the king, and if the king is in favor of more than, the king must retire right away.

5. hottie dynasty

As you can see in the photo above, the current king and previous kings are all famous for being handsome . For visuals of past kings, refer to the individual documents below.

What's unusual is that the types are different depending on the interval between the two. The first and second kings were the bold Honam type, the third and fourth kings were the handsome type, and the current 5th king is the Honam type again.... We are looking forward to the types of the young princes after they grow up.

6. digression

Except for the second Jigme Wangchuck, who had no notable achievements, all of them are depicted on the Nultam banknotes, Bhutan's currency.
  • Ugen Wangchuk - 500 Nultam
  • Jigme Dorji Wangchuk - 20 Nultam
  • Jigme Singye Wangchuk - 10, 100 Nultam
  • Jigme Kesar Namgiel Wangchuk - 50, 1,000 Nultam

[1] However, Zigme Singhuan was not favorable to democratization from the beginning. This is because there is a case of suppressing the demand for democratization in the 1990s. However, considering that there were a lot of Nepalese residents, the demand for democratization in the 1990s is ambiguous to be the will of most people. If so, it will be welcomed when the people ask for democratization, but there is no reason to oppose it.[2] It is a noteworthy example in that a dictatorship achieved democratization peacefully, considering that there were numerous conflicts and bloodshed in Korea alone from dictatorship to democratization.[3] However, perhaps for this reason, Bhutan's democracy index is at the 'mixed system' level, ranking 84th out of 167 countries, and the world freedom index is also somewhat low at 61 out of 100. Of course, we have to take into account that it has only been about 16 years since it was democratized from an absolute monarchy...
