1. outline

Monarch of Malaysia .

Yang di-Pertuan Agong means ‘the master’ in Malay , and this title is also used in English without translation. In the Chinese language used by Malaysian Chinese, it is called Supreme Marshal (最高元首). In Korea, for convenience, he is mainly referred to as the " King of Malaysia " in the media.

2. history

The title of Yang Di-Pertuan Agong was created in 1957 when Malaysia became independent. Originally, Malaysia was not a unified country, but was divided into about a dozen countries. Britain ruled these countries indirectly by making them protectorates and exerting influence over them. In the process of independence, these protectorates adopted a federal system and became independent as one country, which is the current Malaysia.

After independence, Malaysia adopted a constitutional monarchy modeled on Britain, and accordingly created the position of Yang di-Pertuan Agong and made him the head of state .

3. tenure and succession

The Yang Di-Pertuan Prince is an elected office with a fixed term , and the monarchs of the nine provinces that have their own monarchs are members of the Majlis Raja-Raja/Conference of Rulers.[2] The principle is to open and make a call, and in reality, there is an implicit turn and it takes turns.

The term of office is 5 years and he cannot be reappointed, but if he continues to live as a local monarch until his turn comes around, reappointment is not prohibited, so there are cases where he served two terms as king, like Abdul Halim .

There is also a position called the Deputy King (Timbalan Yang di-Pertuan Agong), who is also elected from among the nine regional rulers. He acts as the King in the event of a vacancy until a new King is elected.

When the King abdicates or dies, the position of local monarch is inherited according to the regulations of each region, but the King's position remains vacant, and the Vice King assumes authority and elects a new King for a five-year term.

Just because a local monarch becomes king does not mean he loses his status as a local monarch, but since it is not easy to hold concurrent positions in reality, when he is elected king, he usually entrusts the local monarch's authority to the regent and focuses on his duties as king.

2016 King Muhammad V, who came to the throne on December 13, was Kelantan , Kelantan, who inherited the throne from his father Tuangku Chatet in 2010. Pet was alive at the time (death in 2019), but the reason for the early days is due to health problems caused by stroke. 2019 On January 4, Muha Taste III's early retirement theory spread, and the government denied it as a rumor, but on January 6, two days later , the king was vacant . Since then, the agency of the father -in -law continued, and the sulti of each state gathered to meet and voted on January 24 Abdullah of Pagda Pagoda was elected as a new king . In addition, the king was also selected as a Sultan Perak .

The states and royal families that can elect a King or Deputy King of Malaysia are as follows:

Melaca , Penang , Saba , and Sarawak cannot be elected as king or king because they have no king and vice presidential governors and vice presidents .

The headdress and the exclusive upper and lower garments of the Malaysian King are composed of the Negeri Sembilan style and the Keda style respectively, and it is said that this is because of the first King, Tuangku Abdul Rahman, and the 5th and 14th King , Abdul Halim .

4. authority

As a country with a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary system , the king only serves as a symbolic head of state .

Nominally, he appoints the prime minister and ministers, has the power to sanction laws passed by the parliament, is the commander-in-chief of the Malaysian army , has the power to appoint judges to the Federal Supreme Court, appoints senators, and is the governor-general of Sarawak , Sabah , Penang , and Melaka , where there is no local monarch. Pertuan Negeri/Governor) has the power to appoint, but this power is exercised only on the recommendation of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. He is also the ex officio honorary commissioner of the Royal Malaysian Police. After the 1994 constitutional amendment, the king's authority was further reduced.

The reason for the reversal of Malaysia's joining the International Criminal Court is that the ratification of the Roman regulations by Joror Sultan Irahim Iscandar is strongly against the constitution that defines the immunity of the nine Malaysians, the royal family, the kings, the queen, and the king, and some other royal families are also sympathized with such claims. Malaysia's International Criminal Court of Justice, and eventually reversed at the end
