On March 15, 1935, her engagement to Frederick, Prince of Denmark, was announced.[3] The two first met 17 years ago at Sofiero Castle, their summer residence. At the time, Frederick was a 19-year-old cadet and Ingrid was 8 years old. Frederick's grandmother was a Swedish princess ( Princess Lovisa of Sweden ), so he was related through marriage in a close generation.[4] This was a good opportunity to strengthen the pan- Scandinavian alliance. On May 24, 1935, 25-year-old Ingrid married Frederick at Stockholm Cathedral.

Ingrid stabilized the royal family by alleviating the father-son conflict between her husband and father-in-law, who were not on good terms. With her husband, she gave birth to Margrethe II , Princess Benedict and Princess Annemarie . Ingrid, who was sincere and hardened under the influence of the loss of her mother in her childhood, later recalled that Denmark taught her to laugh.

In 1947, her father-in-law, King Christian After she becomes queen, she tries to create a homely atmosphere for the royal family. Originally, her three daughters did not have the right to succeed to the throne, but a constitutional amendment in 1953 granted them the right to succeed, and her eldest daughter Margrete became her crown princess. Ingrid became a grandmother in 1968 when her eldest daughter, Margrethe, gave birth to Frederik and Prince Joachim the following year.[5]

When her husband, Frederick IX , passed away in 1972, her eldest daughter, Margrethe II , ascended the throne as Queen of Denmark. Ingrid, who became queen consort, was given the status of regent by the Danish parliament. When the eldest daughter and her husband went to do official work, they directly raised their maternal grandchildren, striving for the domestic atmosphere of the Danish royal family, stable performance of official duties, and the children's emotional development. Ingrid even watched the birth of her great-grandson, Prince Nikolai (born in 1999).[7] He died a year later on November 7, 2000 at the age of 90.

Queen Inrid was very popular with the people in Denmark[8] The reason she became popular was because she imprinted the image of a family royal family. The Danish royal family was quite patriarchal, and his father -in -law Christian IV treated his wife Alexandrine and his son Prederik. Yingrid mediated between his father -in -law and her husband and reduced the conflict between family members.

What was evaluated as most important was the anti-Nazi action. Denmark in the 1940s suffered from Nazi occupation. It is said that she hung the flags of Denmark , Sweden , and England on the door of Princess Margrethe's room as a sign of resistance. She once risked her life by pushing her eldest daughter through the streets in her stroller when Denmark was being bombed. Her grandfather, King Gustav V , who learned of this, was very worried about her granddaughter, but Ingrid remained resolute, and this move deeply touched the people and increased her support for the royal family.
