He was born on May 1, 1850 at Buckingham Palace. His name comes from his godfather, the Duke of Wellington, who had the same birthday. Like his godfather, Arthur was a soldier all his life. Baptized on June 22 of the same year, the courteous, obedient, and Prince Albert-like Arthur became Queen Victoria 's favorite child.
Like his brothers, he was educated by private tutors and entered the Royal Military College, Woolwich, at the age of 16.
