A photo taken of four generations together[1]
Photo taken with his mother, Crown Princess Margaret
He was born at the Royal Palace in Stockholm at 11:10 pm on April 22, 1906, during the reign of King Oscar II, as the eldest son of Gustav VI Adolf, who was the crown prince at the time , and Princess Margaret of Connaught . He spent his childhood traveling between Sweden and his mother's home in England, and was educated with his peers at the Royal Palace in Stockholm before going to boarding school at the age of 12. He hated math and had difficulty studying due to dyslexia.

When I was 14, my mother died suddenly. Gustav Adolf, who was particularly dependent on his mother's support and love due to dyslexia, had a very difficult time and was forced to take a break from school for a year. He began his military career by enlisting after graduating from boarding school. To educate himself as a future king, he studied political science, economics, constitutional law, German, French, and history at Uppsala University. As an outstanding sportsman, he was a three-time Swedish saber fencing champion, participated in the Berlin Olympics as a flag bearer, and was also good at rowing, shooting, and skiing. He also showed a keen interest in scouting activities and was chairman of the Swedish Scout Association and honorary chairman of the World Scout Federation. Due to his very shy personality, he was misunderstood as being stiff and difficult.

While attending the wedding of Lady May Cambridge in London in November 1931, he was introduced to Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha by his younger sister Ingrid . Both were descendants of Queen Victoria and were 6th cousins.[2] The two quickly became close, married in Coburg the following year, and took up residence at the Haga Palace, which had undergone extensive renovation.

1946 family photo
One son and four daughters were born to Sibylla. He said he was a father who was playful and loved inventing things together. Gustav Adolf nicknamed his youngest son Duke and the first thing he asked about his son when he returned home was how he was doing. However, nine months after the birth of her long-awaited son, Carl Gustav , he died in a plane crash in Copenhagen, Denmark , while returning home from hunting with Duke Bernhard (husband of Queen Juliana (then before her accession to the throne)) in the Netherlands . The plane carrying Gustav Adolf and his party took off without removing the rudder lock, and crashed and exploded shortly thereafter. At home, my daughters were preparing to pick me up from the airport. It is said that his identity was only confirmed through his decorations and medals.
“The fact that Gustav Adolf was not open about his feelings may have meant that he was sometimes misunderstood, especially by those who did not know him well. The rarest treasures and purest gems are often hidden deep within. So was he. To those who didn't know him well, he may have seemed stiff and closed-off. But to those who had the privilege and fortune of his friendship, he was a man and a human being, at least my equal.”

Folke Bernadotte 's tribute

Crown Prince Gustav Adolf was greatly shocked by his son's sudden death, and Crown Princess Louise played the role of informing Sibylla and King Gustav V of the news of the accident. A devastated King Gustav V wept openly at his grandson's funeral.

The baby that Oscar II is holding is Prince Gustav Adolf.[2] For reference, the two are descendants of Duke Wilhelm of Nassau, and Prince Gustav Adolf's great-grandmother Sophia of Nassau was the aunt of Sibylla's paternal grandmother, Princess Helene, so they were actually distant relatives.[3] Because she did not marry a noble woman , she was the only one among her sisters to have the right to succession and the title of Swedish princess.[4] The three sons of the Catholic Schwaben, the Catholic chief of the Ho Ho Ho Ho Ho Ho .[5] Swedish queen Victoria , Prince Carl Philip , Prince of Helsingland and Estricland Female Duke Madeleen
