1858 June 16th He was born as the first and eldest of four sons of Prince Oscar of Sweden and Princess Zofia of Nassau . He was the last grandchild that his paternal grandfather , King Oscar I , saw during his lifetime, and in fact, he was the eldest grandson.[1] A year after Gustav was born, Oscar I died.

He met Victoria of Baden in 1879 and married her in 1881 . Victoria's ancestors were from the Holstein-Gottorp dynasty, the Swedish royal family before the Bernadotte dynasty to which Gustav belonged . For this reason, the marriage of Gustav and Victoria was a symbol of the union of the old and new Swedish dynasties, and the legitimacy of the Bernadotte dynasty, which was an emerging dynasty with the image of a quick success, was further enhanced. It was a neutral country in World War I, and during the war, Gustav V underwent surgery for a stomach ulcer. Immediately after World War I, Gustav V implemented reforms to prevent the spread of communism, and the Swedish economy deteriorated in the aftermath of the Great Depression, but the efforts of Gustav V and Swedish intellectuals succeeded in resolving the economic crisis in 1931 .
