2. career
He was the permanent bishop of Lübeck from 1727 to 1750 , and when his cousin Karl Friedrich, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp died in 1739, he was selected as a servant of the Holstein-Gottorp family to assist his nephew, Karl Peter Ulrich, who would later become Peter III of the Russian Empire . Yelizaveta Petrovna of the Russian Empire , who came to power in 1741, nominated Karl Peter Ulrich as her successor. Thanks to this, he was able to secure a sponsor who would help him become the heir to the Swedish throne. After being defeated in the Russian-Swedish War of 1741-1743, Sweden nominated him as the heir to the Swedish throne at the request of Empress Elizaveta on June 23, 1743. In 1744, he married Louise Ulrike ( 1720-1782 ) , the 6th daughter of Frederick William I of the Kingdom of Prussia . Therefore, Frederick the Great is his brother-in-law. The young couple initially supported the Hattar party, but soon distanced themselves from it.
On March 25, 1751, Frederick I died childless and succeeded to the Swedish throne. Contrary to Empress Elizabeth's intentions, he had no intention of becoming a puppet of Russia, and on the advice of her queen, he sponsored the Messore party to keep the Hatar party in check. He also traveled all over Sweden trying to garner support from his people. However, the administration was almost paralyzed as the parliament rebelled against the king's actions.
In June 1756, supporters of the king planned a coup to seize power, but it failed and several of them were executed. The king and queen were given an ultimatum to either cease their efforts to consolidate their royal power or to abdicate. In the end, he chose to retain the throne on the condition that Parliament retain all power.
Later, in 1766, under the leadership of Anders Schydenius, the Freedom of the Press Act (Tryckfrihetsförordning) was allowed to be enacted, but in 1768, with the help of his eldest son Gustav , he succeeded in regaining royal authority from the National Assembly.

2.1. Absurd death due to gluttony
However, he was unable to properly use the royal authority he had barely regained, and died from the aftereffects of gluttony on February 12, 1771.
Before Ash Wednesday, February 13th, when Lent begins without eating meat, there was a festival called Fat Tuesday, in which people ate as much fatty meat as they wanted. While they had already enjoyed a large meal of meat and lobster, the cause of death was the fact that they mindlessly ate as many as 14 bowls of bread called semla for dessert.
Semra is a bread filled with many fillings, so it is usually difficult to eat more than one no matter how much you eat, but the courtiers and maids around him also testified that Adolf Fredrik had a great appetite since he was a child. After returning to his bed, Adolf Frederic complained of feeling dizzy and nauseous, collapsed, and eventually died. Looking at the symptoms, it is presumed that the cause of death was a stroke caused by binge eating. Especially since he was 60 years old, which was considered elderly by the standards of the time...
However, there is also a counterargument that this is just a rumor.
