1. outline

As the Swedish king of the Palatinate-Zweibrücken dynasty, he established an absolute monarchy and reached its peak .

2. Detail

His father , Karl So, his mother, Hetwig Eleonora of Holstein-Gottorp, and five officials served as regents, but his mother was not interested in politics. At that time, Sweden had fought numerous wars since the reign of Gustav II Adolf , and the national finances were in dire straits, so the regent government established the Swedish Central Bank. Even when he came of age, the regent government ignored it and continued to rule, but when the situation turned unfavorable in the Skåne War, it took this as an opportunity to start a personal government. King of Denmark and King of Norway Despite the victory in the Battle of Lund , which was a direct battle against Christian V , the war situation became unfavorable, but France, which insisted on maintaining balance in Northern Europe, intervened and was able to recover the remaining regions except for a part of Pomerania east of the Oder River .

After the war, efforts were made to internalize the country, and a policy of recovering land and distributing it equally was carried out, and the legal system was revised and the military system was reformed. In particular, in Swedish Estonia and Swedish Livonia, where the influence of local Baltic German nobles was strong, repatriation orders were implemented and the private lands of nobles were returned to the royal family in an attempt to strengthen royal authority over the Baltic territories. He died of cancer in 1697 .
