He dethroned his half-brother Eric XIV and ascended the throne, and in his later years attempted to revive Catholicism , driving Sweden to ruin again.

Second son of Gustav I Vasa, born in Finland in 1557.[4] He was installed as a duke .

The half-brothers had a good relationship when their father was alive, but they had a falling out after the coronation of Eric XIV. After receiving the Southwest Suomi region as a fief, he pursued an independent foreign policy and married Katazina Jagiellonka, the sister of King of Poland and Grand Duke Sigismund II August of Lithuania. In his later years, he put forward his son Sigismund as a candidate for the Polish throne and installed him as the ruler of Poland-Lithuania, and attempted to revive Catholicism , but was blocked by his younger brother, Duke Karl. As his own religious views were not accepted, he died of a vase in 1592.

  • Thanks to his former role as Duke of Finland, much of his legacy remains in Finland today. In 1558 he founded Björneborg, and most of the exhibits related to him occupy Turku Castle.
  • He was the first Swedish king to be called Archduke of Finland (Storfurste av Finland).
  • Due to his contemplative and introverted personality, he was once told by his father , Gustav I Vasa, not to spend too much time alone as he 'might fall into depression and bad thoughts .'
