You who are eternal, you who are free Du gamla, Du fria | |
![]() | |
lyricist | Richard Dybeck |
arranger | Edvin Kallstenius, 1933 |
1. outline
Sweden 's national anthem. The original title was Sång till Norden (Song of the Norse), but the first verse became the title. It is also translated as 'your ancestors, your freedom', but 'you who are eternal, you who are free' is closer to the original language.
Even though the Swedish parliament did not officially designate it as the national anthem, it was used nationwide as well as being framed at government events.
In most cases, the 3rd and 4th verses are omitted, so it is common to play only the 2nd verse.

2. lyrics
The lyrics were written by Ricard Dubeck in 1844 . If you look at the lyrics of this song, you can see that it is nothing more than a love confession for Scandinavia/Sweden.
Lyrics were added to the song that was originally folk song. Dubbek wrote the lyrics to Så Rider Jag Mig Mig Mig över Tolvmilan Skog (then I ride in 12 miles of forest) # . The lyrics written by Dubeck are up to verse 2. Originally, it was more like a scandinavian hymn rather than Sweden's patriotism, so 3-4 verses were added in the 1910s as they began to become a state. Norden from verse 2 is not only Sweden but also all Nordic countries .
In 1893, King Oscar II stood up when this song was played at the graduation ceremony of Lund University, and it began to be used as a de facto national anthem. However, many people did not recognize it as an official national anthem, so a contest was held in 1899, and the city of Sweden (Sverige) was won, but it was not designated as an official national anthem.

- In the early 2010s, Naver made an error introducing the sound source of this song as the national anthem of Singapore . Conversely, the real Singaporean anthem was introduced as the national anthem of Sweden. This was corrected in the mid-2010s when the sound source was completely replaced.
- In the intro to Regular Ordinary Swedish Meal Time, a rock version of the song plays with a waving Swedish flag.
- Civilization 5 Sweden 's Peacetime BGM is an arrangement of this song.
