1. outline
Sweden 's legislature. Its official name is Sveriges Riksdag . Also known as Riksdag. The current Swedish parliament adopts a unicameral system .
2. history
The Council of Nobles convened in Arboga in 1435 became the basis for the Swedish Parliament. Later King of Sweden Gustav I Vasa reorganized it into a class parliament representing four classes , and it became a bicameral system in 1866 . In 1970, the constitution was revised again and the number of members was reorganized into a unicameral assembly with 350 members. However, to solve the problem of a tie, the number was adjusted to 349, the current number of members.
3. current situation
The 2022 Swedish parliamentary elections have been held. The next election is scheduled for 2026.
4. Term and election
Assuming there is no dissolution of parliament , members of the Swedish parliament are guaranteed four-year terms. Of the 349 members, 310 are regional proportional representatives, and the remaining 39 are national proportional representatives. In other words, 310 members are elected by dividing the country into several regions (regional districts and major constituencies) and then holding proportional representation elections for each region. The remaining 39 candidates are allocated to each party in a way that compensates for the difference between the number of seats each party should obtain and the number of seats actually obtained, assuming that the whole country is one region.
All seats are proportionally represented, and if an existing seat becomes vacant due to an accident, the next-ranking member is promoted to the National Assembly, so there are very few re-elections. Each district elects an average of 10 to 12 people. The smaller one has 2 seats and the larger one has 34 seats. Each constituency generally corresponds to an administrative district, but in areas that include large cities such as Stockholm, Malmö, and Gothenburg, one administrative district may be divided into several electoral districts.
In proportional representation elections by region, seats can be allocated if 12% or more of the votes are obtained in the region (regional district). Proportional representation seats in the national constituency can be allocated when 4% or more of the national vote is obtained.
