Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Taebaek City Originating from Changjuk-dong , Gyeonggi-do Gimpo City A river that flows from Bogugot-ri, Wolgot-myeon , to the West Sea . It is Korea 's first-class river and the capital of Korea. It is a river that runs through Seoul .
The total extension is 494.44km, the fourth longest on the Korean peninsula , and the longest river in South Korea after the Nakdong River . The watershed area is 36,693㎢, and the basin area is the largest among the rivers on the Korean peninsula.[10] , The flow rate is the most.
The Han River has two main streams, one is the Namhan River and the other is the Bukhangang River , of which the Namhan River is considered the main stream. Both of these streams originate from the Taebaek Mountains , with the Namhangang River originating from Taebaeksan Mountain and the Bukhangang River originating from North Korea. It originates from Mt. Geumgang . The Namhangang River originates in Taebaek-si, Gangwon-do and runs through Samcheok.[11] · Passing through Jeongseon and Yeongwol , it enters Chungcheongbuk-do , then enters Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province again, passing through Wonju-si , and then enters Gyeonggi-do and passes through Yeoju-si . The Bukhan River is located in Gangwon-do, North Korea. It originates from Geumgang-gun , passes through Hoeyang , Changdo , and Gimhwa , crosses the ceasefire line , passes through Cheorwon- gun , Hwacheon-gun , and Chuncheon - si , enters Gyeonggi-do, and passes through Gapyeong-gun .
These two streams are Yangpyeong -gun, Gyeonggi -do It is only joined in Yangseo -myeon and forms the Han River. Afterwards, he passed through Namyangju , Hanam , Seoul, Goyang , and Gimpo , and joined the Imjin River in Paju and flows to the Yellow Sea.
Since it is a river that penetrates the capital Seoul, it is also a symbol of Korea . The term miracle of the Han River , which refers to the rapid growth of the Korean economy, is also derived from the river. In particular, among the rivers across the world, the rivers are very wide.[12] It has a unique landscape in the world. Since the euro is long, the width is different depending on the upstream or downstream, but by the city of Chungju , it is already widened to 200 ~ 400m, and it is about 800 ~ 1200m after passing the Paldang Lake .[13] As you get closer to the estuary, the width is widened to 2 km.[14]

2. designation
Other names include 'Hansu' and '열 水'. In particular, the name 'Hansu' was written in newspapers until the 1970s .
Since it is the largest river in Korea, some people think that the Chinese character for it should also be the Korean River, but in fact, according to the explanation attached to Daedongyeojido, the name Han River comes from the Korean word 'Hangaram'. In the old saying, 'Han' means 'big' or 'person in full swing', and Garam refers to a river. In other words, it means ‘big river’. In a similar example, Daejeon was called Hanbat. So the Chinese character '漢' is just a tuning fork and has nothing to do with China.[15] For reference, Hanjiang is also located in China. The Han River was called 'Daesu (帶水)' until the early Three Kingdoms period , and is recorded as ' Arisu (阿利水)' in the tombstone of King Gwanggaeto the Great . In Baekje, it was called ‘Ukriha (郁利河)’. In the Samguk sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms ) geography, there is a record of it being written as ‘Hansanha (漢山河)’ or ‘Bukdok (北瀆)’. It is said that the name Han River came about around the time when Baekje began interacting with China's Dongjin, and from then on it was called 'Hansu (漢水)' or 'Hangang (漢江)'.
During the Joseon Dynasty, the Han River was often called Gyeonggang because it was a river that passed through Gyeongseong.[16] . The same river was divided into three sections: Seogang (west), Yongsan River, and Han River (east) and collectively called 'Samgang'.
If you look at the 2nd minute mark, you can see the names on the old map in detail.
In East Asian place names, the place where the sun was bright was called Yang, and the opposite was called Yin. To the south of a certain landmark was called Yang, and to the north was called Yin. However, because the river was a sunken terrain, the north side was called Yang. So, based on the Han River, the northern land was called Hanyang, and the city built on the Han River was called Hanseong.[17] The Han River became the standard.

3. history
3.1. three kingdoms
Baekje was founded in the Han River basin, and from the Three Kingdoms period onwards, the country's heyday was determined by who occupied the middle and lower reaches of the river. The heyday of the country was determined by taking possession of the Han River .[18] This is also taught when the Three Kingdoms period is taught in schools. Initially, the Baekje family in the 4th century During the reign of King Geunchogo , and then in the 5th century Goguryeo during the reign of King Gwanggaeto , and later in the 6th century It was occupied by Silla during the reign of King Jinheung .[19] Baekje, Goguryeo, and Silla reached their heyday one after another, and the other two countries that were in their heyday always formed alliances to balance power. Even if the country at its peak changes, this structure continues throughout the Three Kingdoms period.[20]
The Hangang River was important because its strengths, such as its agricultural productivity, securing transportation routes through water transport, and maritime trade routes with China, were very significant. The Han River basin was the only place where major rivers such as the Taedong River, Geum River, Yeongsan River, and Nakdong River, and other rivers flowing through the Korean peninsula, and shipping in the Southwest Sea could be connected at once .

The Han River basin was the only place where major rivers such as the Taedong River, Geum River, Yeongsan River, and Nakdong River, and other rivers flowing through the Korean peninsula, and shipping in the Southwest Sea could be connected at once .
3.2. North and South Korea period
After the unification of the three kingdoms, Silla divided the Hansan River (Han River) in the north into the Hwangsan River ( Nakdong River ) to the South Sea, the Ungcheon River ( Geumgang River ) to the West Sea, and the Toji River ( Pohang ) to the East Sea. It was designated as one of the four major rivers in the country along with Gokgangcheon in Heunghae -eup.[21] It was considered so important ideologically that ancestral rites for the middle priest were held regularly in the country .
3.3. Joseon Dynasty
In the Joseon Dynasty, when water transport was the center, it was an important passage through which goods from Gyeonggi/Chungcheong/Jeonla flowed into Hanyang. Also, the Han River was definitely included when holding ancestral rites at Myeongsan Daecheon to hold a ritual for rain. Even these days, you can see people praying with a table set on the banks of the Han River on the first full moon of the first lunar month.
3.4. Flowering Period ~ Japanese Colonial Period
As the Gyeongin Line was laid, the Han River Railroad Bridge was completed. The emergence of the Gyeongin Line became an opportunity for the decline of water transport on the Han River.
3.5. 1960's
|
In 1963, as Seoul expanded greatly, the Han River was incorporated into Seoul in earnest. Until the early 1960s, people could enjoy swimming on the sandy beach near the Hangang Bridge . It was very common to see people enjoying swimming in the Han River during the summer vacation season as there were so many sandbars that the shoreline was a sandy beach . However, as the influx of population continued, various industrial facilities were built like bamboo shoots, so sewage and sewage from various factories flowed into the Han River, and the water quality of the Han River deteriorated, and swimming was also prohibited.[22]
3.6. 1970's
Until the early 1970s, before full-scale industrialization and development of the Han River began, the water quality of the Han River was relatively clean. Since then, with the construction of large-scale sewage treatment facilities in the late 1980s, water quality has improved, but it is still difficult to drink the water as is.[23] The further downstream you go, the worse the water quality becomes.
3.7. 1980's
Much of the Han River and its surroundings in Seoul today are based on the comprehensive Han River Development Plan promoted by the Chun Doo-hwan government in the 1980s. At that time, the Han River was severely polluted due to reckless development. In the 1980s , the need to improve the environment increased as the economy was able to afford to care for the environment of the capital city and the right to host the Seoul Olympics was obtained. In addition, the dispersal and expansion of amusement facilities concentrated in the center of the four main gates and the expansion of urban infrastructure such as roads also became important goals during this period.
For simple environmental improvement, water quality improvement measures are sufficient, but with the expansion of urban infrastructure, the need to utilize the banks around the Han River arose, and the Han River Comprehensive Development Plan was born. This plan is largely divided into the dredging of the Han River, the maintenance of sewage pipes and networks , the construction of underwater weirs, the maintenance of the Han River banks, and the construction of high-speed roads along the Gangnam section of the Han River banks, many of which have become landmarks symbolizing Seoul in their own way.
The dredging of the Han River dug deeper the depth of the Han River to 2.5m and sells the sand that dug up to cover some of the costs of the comprehensive development process.[24] The cause is flood control, but in reality it is possible to travel to this section, and the result is the Han River cruise ship that continues . In addition, the construction was carried out to keep the flow rate constant by establishing a mediation and new song intercession . As a result, the Han River section of Seoul, which was influenced by high tide and low tide, has changed very calmly.
Like other rivers, the banks of the Han River, where the sandbars remained intact, were polluted with domestic sewage and industrial wastewater. A park was created and the present Hangang Park was created. In Seoul in the 1980s, there were not so many park-type amusement facilities that could be enjoyed for free, and citizens' leisure life was mainly done in the center of the city, but there was also a purpose to disperse them.
The current Olympic-daero is the road that utilizes the banks of the Han River in the Gangnam area. At that time, there was only one road in Seoul that followed the Han River . At that time, it was a form of forcibly connecting what was divided into Gangbyeon 1-ro and Gangbyeon 5. There was also a round-trip two-lane section, and the linearity was not good, so it was difficult to call it a perfect high-speed road. Currently, expansion work has been steadily carried out by utilizing the northern bank of the Han River, and the current Gangbyeon North Road is very different from the past Gangbyeon 1-ro to Gangbyeon 5-ro. The opening of Olympic Highway has contributed greatly to Seoul's traffic to this day.
The project started in 1982 and ended in 1986, and several public service advertisements for the 'Han River Series' were aired to commemorate the project's completion. Hangang Series Public Service Advertisement 1 In addition, a memorial tower commemorating the completion of the Han River Comprehensive Development Project was erected near the confluence of Tancheon . Songs related to the Han River were also released around the completion of the development of the Han River between 1985 and 1987. Lee Eun -ha's 'Our Han River', Jeong Su-ra's 'Dancing Han River', Jeong Jong-suk's 'Our Han River', Lee Seon- hee's 'Song of the Han River' There have been many songs related to the Han River.
The Han River Comprehensive Development Plan was a project that made a lot of things that came to mind when 'Han River' was 'Han River' in Seoul . # First, the two Han River underwater beams made the quantity of the Han River section in Seoul, but it had a side effect of preventing the sedimentation of the tora or sand by preventing the natural flow of the river. In addition, underwater beams are the source of environmental protectionists as a cause of preventing fish from moving and preventing the establishment of a normal ecosystem. The Han River, which is dominated by concrete embankments, also constantly argued that environmental destruction. The concrete embankment attempted to restore the wetlands to some sections to restore the environment.
4. geography/environment
The river bed coefficient is severely high, and the basin is notorious for being an overly narrow river. Thanks to this, when there is heavy rain, such as the rainy season or torrential rain, the Jamsu Bridge is submerged and the river's wide waterfront and Hangang Park are flooded. The Seine River in Paris has a river coefficient of 10 times, but the Han River in Seoul has a river coefficient of over 380 times. # Contrary to this, in winter, the dry season, the width of the river is relatively reduced.
The environmental advantage of the Han River is the decrease and reduction of heat island phenomena , which is easy to understand considering the principle of the computer 's water cooler . Of course, it is the standard when the water of the river flows normally. When the river flows, the kinetic energy of the water collides with the air, causing the wind, and the wind moves the surrounding air. If the river does not flow normally, the effect of heat island does not occur.
Even now, in Seoul , there are place names named after ferry sites, such as Gwangjin (wide ferry / Nobeun ferry /), Mapo (Samgae), Ttukseom ferry, Gongam ferry, Songpajin, Hangangjin, Yanghwajin ( Beodeulgotgae), Samjeondo (Sambat ferry), Dongjak ferry, Seogang ferry, Noryangjin ( Nodeul ferry ), and Yeongdeungpo , due to the geographic width of the very wide Han River. It got its name because it was able to function as a water transport using its characteristics and advantages. # Among them, Noryangjin (Nodeulnaru) was famous as a transportation hub on the Han River that managed both passenger and shipping operations, so a port and a fishing port were built, and even now in the 2020s, Noryangjin Fish Market is located in Noryangjin. #[25]
In the section where the Han River passes through Seoul, the water level is maintained above a certain level due to the Shingok underwater weir installed in Gimpo City . The water level at this time is called low water level, and the section filled with water is called low waterway. In addition to aesthetic purposes, this also serves the purpose of launching cruise ships. In fact, the bottom of the Han River has been excavated so deeply that aggregate extraction has taken place over a long period of time since the Han River Comprehensive Development Project, so the water depth needed to launch a cruise ship can be secured even without an underwater weir. However, in order to dock cruise ships, an underwater weir is still needed unless additional dredging is done near the dock.

4.1. water system
Parts of Gyeongsangbuk-do and the northern part of Boeun-gun, the southern part of Chungcheongbuk-do, are part of the Han River system. If the Imjin River and Hantan River water systems are also viewed as the Han River water system, northern Gyeonggi and North Korea's Gangwon-do can be viewed as the Han River water system. #
Siheung City, a city in Gyeonggi-do that is slightly outside the Han River watershed, is located in its own basin on the west coast .[26] Ansan-si , the western part of Hwaseong- si, Suwon-si in the Anseong Stream basin, eastern Hwaseong -si , Pyeongtaek-si , Anseong- si[27] , Yongin-si Giheung-gu ( most of Suji-gu, the Han River - Tancheon basin )[28] , the area around Guseong- eup, Giheung-gu[29] Excluding) and the southwestern region of Gyeonggi- do.[30]
Incheon Metropolitan City is also not part of the Han River water system, except for some areas .
Among the Han River watershed areas , Bucheon , Gwacheon , Gwangmyeong , Anyang , Gunpo , Uiwang , Seongnam , Yongin , Hanam , Guri , Namyangju , Goyang , Uijeongbu , Yangju , and Gimpo have a strong bed town character . On the other hand, areas outside the Han River system, such as Incheon, Suwon, and Ansan, are far from the typical Seoul commuting area. There is a great correlation between the geographical scope of the Han River water system and the geographical scope of the Seoul commuting area.
The name of the main stream of the Han River varies depending on the section. gyeonggi-do Yangpyeong at Chungcheongbuk -do The section leading to Danyang-gun is the Namhan River, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province The section of Yeongwol- gun is Donggang , Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province The section in Jeongseon-gun is called the Choyanggang River, and the section in Taebaek- si upstream is called the Goljicheon Stream. There are various tributaries such as Anyangcheon, Jungnangcheon, and Tancheon, and the Hangang Citizens Park, which is a park built along the Hangang River, is famous when you enter the jurisdiction of Seoul Metropolitan City.
Bukhangang River and Namhangang River in Gyeonggi - do It meets at Yangsu-ri ( Dumulmeori ), Yangpyeong -gun , passes through Seoul , and enters the Yellow Sea from the Gimpo Peninsula. At this time, it meets the Imjin River at the estuary , and there is disagreement as to whether or not the Imjin River watershed area should be included in the Han River watershed. The section after the confluence of the Imjin River is also called the Jo River.
Although the width and basin of the Bukhan River and the Namhan River are similar, the source of the river (main stream under the River Act) is usually based on the longest flow, so the source of the Han River can be said to be the Namhan River. The source of the Namhan River is Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. In Taebaek-si , water veins at the foot of Geumdaebong (1,418m), Gomoknamu Spring and Jedanggum Spring, Daedeoksan Mountain (1,307m), and Bidanbong Peak (1,281m) gush out from the valley of Geomryongso in Changjuk-dong.[31] At Auraji in Jeongseon, the main stream , Goljicheon, meets Songcheon . This stream continues toward Yeongwol , joins the Sogang River , and then heads south again to Chungcheongbuk-do. After passing through Danyang-gun , they gather at Chungju Lake in Jecheon-si . Afterwards, it heads north until it meets the Bukhan River at Paldang . #
4.2. very wide river width
![]() | ![]() |
This is the Han River before the 1980s and the current Han River in the 2020s. The Han River, which runs through the middle of Seoul, was not wide and carried a lot of heavy load .[32] The width of the river was widened due to the Han River Comprehensive Development Project in the 1980s . #
Currently, the average is about 1.2km, and at the downstream point, near Odusanseong Fortress in Paju, it is well over 2km. # If you include the huge berm around the Han River and the wide Han River Park , it becomes even bigger. # So, before the Han River was renovated, there was even a sandy beach. #
The wide width of the Han River is also the reason why although all bridges over the Han River have well-equipped sidewalks for people to walk, people rarely cross on foot and instead have to take their own vehicles, buses, or subways. First of all, although the sidewalk and the road are clearly separated by a safety fence, numerous vehicles pass by people quickly, making people psychologically uneasy, and the bridge is not only high in height but also very long, so the scenery of the Han River does not change much while walking, so it is easy to get bored while walking. Some see this as a reason why the psychological disconnect between Gangbuk and Gangnam is being maximized.[33] In addition, accessing the bridge is not as easy as you might think. Since most residential areas are located between the river and the urban highway and the huge Han River berm, pedestrians usually cannot access the bridge directly. Instead, they have to approach the berm on foot and then climb the stairs again to get to the bridge pedestrian path. Even for an adult man, it takes close to 30 minutes to walk, but unless you are someone who is quite determined and joggers , not many people walk this street on a daily basis.
As a result, the wide river width causes many difficulties in terms of railway transportation. # Before urbanization progressed, the first subway could be connected by an above-ground railway bridge, but since then, the second subway lines, Line 5 , Line 8 , Suin Bundang Line , and Seohae Line, all cross the Han River through underwater tunnels . The problem is that in this process, the railway stations at the starting and ending points of the crossing are flat in terms of topography, but due to the depth of the undersea tunnel, they also boast an enormous depth.
4.2.1. Comparison with other cities in the world
river | width |
Thames River, London, England | 265m |
seine river in paris france | 200m |
moscow river, moscow, russia | 150m |
Spree River, Berlin, Germany | 50m |
Tiber River, Rome, Italy | 88m |
Manzanares River, Madrid, Spain | 40m |
Han River, Seoul, South Korea | 1200m |
There are many rivers that pass through cities around the world, but rivers as wide and large as the Han River in Seoul that pass through the capital are very rare. Among megalopolises the size of Seoul , it is definitely one of the few. England, one of Europe's megalopolises The Thames River in London or France Seine River in Paris , Italy In the case of the Tiber River in Rome , it is narrow enough that people can easily cross it on foot.
In fact, Seoul now appears to embrace the Han River, but it was not a city built with the Han River from the beginning, but started on the north side of the river.[34] Because the development of Gangnam is quite recent, the case is a little different from the cities in the previous examples. Since the current Seoul is an expansion to the south of the river, which was originally another town, it can be said to be a combination of cities on both sides of the river, like Budapest . Therefore, it is safe to say that it is divided into two city districts, Gangbuk and Gangnam .
Many foreigners who visit Seoul for the first time without prior knowledge are surprised by the magnificent and wonderful scenery, including the huge and wide river width compared to rivers in many famous cities around the world , the wide berm with a clear view of the horizon , and the well-equipped Hangang Park . # Additionally, the so-called 'Han River view' seen from high-rise apartments or tall buildings in Seoul at night and the view of the Han River from a cruise ship are also quite spectacular. #
Of course, it is rare, but there are instances where a river as wide as the Han River crosses a city. There are many places like Seoul where there was a city only on one side of the river and then expanded or separate cities were merged in modern times. Or, there are many cases where there is a large river near a city, but the area beyond the river is not an urban area.[35]
- There is a city in Wuhan , China, where the Yangtze River , which is as wide as 2 km, runs through it. Wuhan is divided into Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang across the Yangtze River.[36] Because the three traditional cities of , were administratively integrated in modern times, it was shaped like this to embrace the Yangtze River.[37]
- Another large city that the Yangtze River passes through is Nanjing . The cityscape, which was traditionally formed south of the Yangtze River, has expanded to the north of the river in modern times, making it more similar to the Han River in Seoul. Chongqing City (重慶) also has the Yangtze River running through the city, but because it is an upstream area, the width of the river is narrower than that of Wuhan or Nanjing.
- Harbin City penetrates the city of Songhua , but the width itself is wide enough to reach 2km, but there are many loads in between.
- In Pyongyang , the Taedong River runs through the city, and the expansion of the main city area in Gangbuk to Gangnam is similar to Seoul. However, because the Daedong River basin is one of the unique small rain areas on the Korean Peninsula , the width of the river is about 100m narrower than that of the Han River in Seoul.
- The Bosphorus Strait, which divides Istanbul in Turkye, is about 1 km wide and similar to the Han River, but because it is a strait, it is much deeper than the Han River. Istanbul's traditional urban area is west of the strait, including Fatih District, the old Constantinople area, and as the city developed, it expanded to the east of the strait, so it is similar to Seoul.
- In the case of New York City in the United States , the 1.5 km wide Hudson River flows, but the other side of the Hudson River is not New York, but New Jersey, which is a different state beyond the city.
- Although there is a Dnieper River with a width of over 10 km, this is limited to the section that was artificially dammed.[38] Most of the rivers that pass through the city are about 1km wide. Typically, Kiiu is divided into east and west around the Dnieper River, and the river is about 1 km wide.
- Although each case is different , the mouth of the La Plata River, which is over 200km wide, borders Buenos Aires and Montevideo , the capitals of Argentina and Uruguay , to the north and south.
4.3. bridge construction problem
Due to the geographical characteristics of the Han River , it is difficult to construct a bridge in the form of a full arch . Specially shaped bridges are also rare, and at least the Olympic Bridge, a cable- stayed bridge, was built in commemoration of the 1988 Seoul Olympics .
It is said that the ebb and flow of the tides were so severe that before the construction of the Singok underwater weir, the ebb and flow of the tide could be seen even in Apgujeong . Of course, there are still some differences in water level, but the water level is maintained to some extent even during low tide due to the underwater weir, and the underwater weir completely blocks the rising sea water, so it is difficult to clearly feel a big difference. Seawater has a higher specific gravity than fresh water, so it sinks downward and is blocked by an underwater dam.
However, currently, cable-stayed bridges and arch bridges are being introduced to newly built bridges to increase the bridge span according to the development of technology and plans with the water transportation function of the Han River in mind, such as the Gyeongin Ara Waterway . World Cup Bridge was completed in the form of a special cable-stayed bridge, and Yanghwa Bridge was constructed by replacing the middle part of the existing bridge with an arch bridge.

4.4. water source protection
Since the upper reaches of the Han River are the water source for Seoul Metropolitan City , Incheon Metropolitan City , and Gyeonggi -do, development of the upper reaches of the Bukhangang and Namhan Rivers, which are the middle reaches of the Han River, is prohibited to protect water quality . , Paldang 2nd water intake or Paldang 3 water intake is used. In the case of Seoul, water from the Han River in front of the Gwangam intake, Gangbuk intake, Amsa intake, and Pungnap intake, located between Paldangho Lake and Jamsil Underwater Reservoir, is used. Among them, the Amsa and Pungnap water intakes are discussed before because they are located downstream of Wangsukcheon, which is seriously polluted due to the inflow of sewage/wastewater from Guri-si and Namyangju-si . In the case of Incheon, the water is collected from the Pungnap water intake and the Paldang water intake, in Seongnam City , the water is taken in front of the Seongnam water intake near the Pungnap water intake, in the case of Goyang , the water is taken from the Han River in front of the water intake located slightly upstream of the old Jayang water intake, and in the case of Gwangmyeong , the Paldang water intake is used. In the case of Yongin-si and Gwangju-si , water from the Yongin/Gwangju intake in the lower reaches of Gyeongancheon and the Hangang River in front of the Gwangju intake is purified and used as tap water. Before the name Han River settled down, it was called Arisu , Arimul/Arinae, etc., which is also the name of Seoul Metropolitan City's tap water, which is the first drinking water in Korea. 'Ari' here means big.
At one time , Incheon Metropolitan City (then Incheon-bu, Gyeonggi-do) had a Noryangjin water purification plant and water intake (established in 1910) under the jurisdiction of Incheon in Noryangjin. After Yeongdeungpo was incorporated into Gyeongseong-bu, the facility was transferred to Seoul Metropolitan City . When the Noryangjin Water Purification Plant was taken away from the Seoul Metropolitan Government , Incheon City built its own Bupyeong Water Purification Plant.

4.5. ecology
Despite the fact that the Han River passes through the metropolitan area of Seoul and the metropolitan area, its water quality and environment are excellent due to continuous water quality improvement and flood control projects.[39] For this reason , it is considered a treasure trove of Korea's hidden ecosystem, housing endangered species such as otters and sharks , as well as fish species rarely seen in other regions, such as yellow puffer. This is because the mouth of the Han River is virtually inaccessible except for military and police vessels due to the military demarcation line, so it is untouched by humans, and there are no structures except piers and underwater weirs, so the inflow of seawater is active, allowing it to harbor a variety of fish species compared to other rivers.
Fish that live in the Han River include carp , grass carp , catfish , bass , snakehead , mandarin fish , shad , minnows , and eels . And in the lower reaches of the Han River, seawater from the West Sea flows back into fresh water, and large schools of mullet often appear. In addition, sea bass , eel, and magpie sharks also appear in the lower Han River.
In the past, sturgeon also lived, but they have now disappeared, and only Siberian sturgeon and stellate sturgeon that were artificially released or escaped from fish farms are rarely found.
As for reptiles , there are many snakes , and the most common snakes are garter snakes , bloodthirsty snakes , and pit vipers . Turtles also appear in the Han River.
Birds such as spot-billed ducks , mallards , herons , great egrets , freshwater cormorants, pintail ducks , mandarin ducks , and seagulls appear in the Han River.
In the case of mammals , otters , raccoons , badgers , and lynxes live here, and occasionally elk, roe deer , and wild boars appear. Among them, otters live only in first and second level waters, so it can be assumed that much of the ecosystem restoration of the Han River has been accomplished.
' Janghang Wetland' is located on the riverbank near Ilsan, Goyang-si, and is designated as a Ramsar wetland . This is also a treasure trove of ecosystems, but after a disaster in 2021 where an environmental group member while cleaning stepped on a landmine and had his ankle amputated, it became a no-access area, and management has been cut off, and waste continues to pile up. #[40]
5. traffic
5.1. water carriage
Since ancient times, water routes connecting Seoul, Yangpyeong, Gangwon, and North Chungcheong Provinces along the Han River have been greatly developed.[41] There were many inconveniences due to the shallow water depth and very large river bed coefficient. Accordingly, from the end of the Joseon Dynasty to the Japanese colonial period, after the Gyeongin Line , railroads , and roads replaced it , large dams such as Cheongpyeong Dam were built on the Han River. After the Korean War, the estuary ( Jo River ) became a demilitarized zone, and water routes to and from the west coast were cut off, leading to a decline in water transportation. Water routes, as important as they were, were replaced by railroads and roads along the Han River. Most of the main lines along the Han River are cut off in Yangpyeong-gun , but in places a little away from the Han River, main lines such as the Central Inland Expressway , Jungang Line , and Gyeonggang Line have virtually replaced their role.
The Gyeongin Ara Waterway , created by expanding the existing Gulpocheon spillway , was opened in 2012, but its usage performance is dismal. In fact, Incheon Port is close to Seoul and has good railways and roads , but due to the high river bed coefficient of the Han River, no logistics infrastructure such as factories has been built along the river. There is no need to use it.
In the case of water transportation, the Hangang Water Taxi continued its existence, but was abolished in 2024, and Hangang Bus service resumed in September 2025 .

5.2. road name
Gyeonggang- ro , Gangbyeonbuk-ro , and Jayu- ro are built on the north bank of the Han River, while Olympic Highway and Gimpo Hangang-ro are built on the south bank. Gangwon-do Gyeonggang- ro, which starts in Gangneung -si, meets the Han River from Yangpyeong-eup and runs on the north side of the Han River.[42] It plays the role of connecting the east-west axis of the national highway.
From Namyangju- si Susu IC to Seoul, Gangbyeon Expressway runs on the north bank of the Han River, and from Misa IC , the terminus of the Seoul Yangyang Expressway, Olympic Highway runs on the south bank of the Han River. The two roads run side by side with the Han River in between, and the North Gangbyeon Road passes Gayang Bridge and continues to Jayu-ro, which continues along the north bank of the Han River in the direction of Imjingak . The Gimpo Hangang Road runs along the southern bank from Haengju Bridge and ends at Yangchon-eup .
It is also used as a drive course because of the beautiful scenery of the Gangbyeon Expressway and the Olympic Bridge that runs along the banks of the Han River. In particular, along Gyeonggang-ro, there are many amusement parks such as Misari , Paldang, and Yangsuri, making it the end point of Han River Drive. In addition to this, Dumugae-gil, right above the Gyeongwon Line railroad, is also considered a good drive course.
There is no existing road that crosses the Han River underground, and if you include the roads under construction, the 2nd Ring Expressway in the metropolitan area exists. The Gimpo - Paju Hangang Tunnel (tentative name), which is being built between Haseong IC and Songchon IC, is also the first road to apply the TBM method. Related promotional video

5.3. railroad
The Gyeongui-Jungang Line is a route that follows the Han River. Gyeongwon Line The section between Yongsan Station and Eungbong Station is a line that runs along the banks of the Han River, and heads north for a while before joining the Jungang Line. After passing Yangjeong Station , it joins the Han River and continues along the Han River until Yangpyeong Station . And among the number of lines in Seoul, all eight lines except Line 6 cross or are under construction on sections that cross the Han River. 1[43] , 2[44] , 3[45] , 4[46] , Line 7[47] , the Airport Railroad crosses the Han River using a railroad bridge . In other words, it is an elevated railway section. Additionally, Incheon Line 2 is also scheduled to cross the Han River via a railroad bridge.
Additionally, Line 5[48] , Line 8[49] ,Line 9[50] , Seohae Line[51] , Suin·Bundang Line[52] , GTX-A[53] The routes do not cross the Han River by bridges, but instead use tunnels underneath or are under construction. In addition, the GTX B line[54] , GTX C line[55] , Susaek-Gwangmyeong high-speed rail[56] , Seoul Light Rail West Line[57] , Shinbundang Line[58] , the Shinansan Line is also planned to pass through the Han River through an underground tunnel . So the depth is very deep.
For the Gwangnaru ↔ Cheonho section of Line 5 , the Han River was blocked using a cut-and-cut dam method and the river bed was exposed as land. After the Line 5 structure was dug up, the dam was burst again and submerged, and for the Yeouinaru ↔ Mapo section, a temporary artificial island was created near Mapo Bridge . The work area was dug out and constructed using the NATM method. So, the Gwangnaru ↔ Cheonho section of Line 5 is not very deep, but the Yeouinaru ↔ Mapo section is very deep. Except for Line 5, which used the cut-and-cut method and NATM, the remaining Han River underground passage lines excavated the Han River using the TBM method without exception . The first line to cross the Han River using the TBM method was the Bundang Line . There is a related documentary filmed by EBS . The widest route among TBMs is the GTX-A route.

6. digression
- Seoul Metropolitan City , Incheon Metropolitan City , Gyeonggi-do , northern Chungcheongbuk - do, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Yeongseo residents use water from this river or tributary for drinking water.
- According to folktales, Gyeonggangjeokryong, who was worshiped by merchants near the Han River, lived there.
- Usually, in addition to Bukhansan (of course, the terms north and south of Bukhansan are not often used, but for example, you can tell just by looking at the difference in the development level of the two regions of Seoul, Cat, Namyangju, and Guri, which are divided based on Bukhansan, and Yangju, and most of the areas that we know are close to North Korea are north of Bukhansan) is the Han River that separates the front and rear of the military base . This is why, based on the Republic of Korea Army standard, forward units are commonly referred to as north of the Han River and rear units are referred to as south of the Han River. Nonsan Soldier discharged from Army Training Center The moment the train carrying the new soldiers passes the Han River Railroad Bridge , their expressions begin to harden. This perception is due to the fact that in the case of Bukhansan Mountain, the area south of Bukhansan Mountain actually blocks North Korea's long-range artillery, which North Korea boasts can hit Seoul, so there is a high probability that most long-range artillery will be caught in Bukhansan Mountain, so you need to bring a missile to hit it. However, the area north of Bukhansan Mountain (most of northern Gyeonggi Province) is literally exposed to long-range artillery and is directly hit by long-range artillery, and in the case of the Han River, the government blew up the Han River bridge during the Korean War, so the area in Seoul (Gangbuk) was destroyed. There may be an aspect of the trauma caused by the residents' failure to evacuate.
- The Han River estuary consists of Ganghwado Island and its affiliated islands . And it is very close to North Korea . There are areas that can be reached from North Korea in less than an hour by combat swimming. If you observe with TOD, etc. while guarding the river at the mouth of the Han River, you can see Korean People's Army troops doing battle or receiving mental training outdoors .
- In 2018, 65 years after the armistice agreement was signed, the two Koreas jointly surveyed the Han River estuary for the first time. Started on November 5th and finished on December 9th.[59]
- On May 13, 2021, Professor Hyun-Wook Kim's research team at the University of Seoul announced the results of a study titled 'Sewage Contribution to Detecting Erectile Dysfunction Drugs in Rivers'. Residual components of phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors were detected in water from the Han River and Tancheon , which are drinking water sources, and they requested measures from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, stating that this was not filtered out even after passing through sewage treatment facilities.
- It is also a river often used in school songs in Seoul .
- There is an application called Fondant that can check the water temperature of the Han River . The purpose is for the convenience of people who enjoy fishing or water sports in the Han River.
- In MBN's news report, the sight of a tabby cat passing by on the Han River at Ttukseom Hangang Park, which had frozen into ice, became a meme and a hot topic around the world. #
- When there is a lot of water in a certain place, it is compared to the Han River. There is a saying like, ‘Water is the Han River,’ and a typical example is comparing ramen, which is made bland by adding more water than the specified amount, to the Han River. At one time, when a picture of ramen was posted on a community site, people would just comment that it was 'Han River', and if there was more water than that, the world's largest rivers such as 'Yang River' would appear in the comments.
- Chungju City PR Men , aimed at the fact that the Han River flows in Chungju , is an interview with the Han River. video
- If you are curious about the water temperature of the Han River, you can check it here.[60]
6.1. Han River View
Houses with a view of the Han River boast very high prices.[61] Places in Gangnam and Gangbuk with high-priced housing sales, such as high-end apartments and officetels, have a clear view of the Han River, and real estate also places great emphasis on this. In particular, apartments with a view of the Han River in Gangnam cost more than several billion won. It seems to be especially popular thanks to the night view. The way the bridge lights up at night is quite beautiful.
Han River View Apartment is often thought of only Seoul . This is because Goyang, Paju, and Gimpo, which are along the Han River, have a post in the Han River, and in recent years, the development of Janghang -dong is being promoted near the Han River.
However , many people who have actually lived in the Han River apartments do not want to live there again . It is difficult to open the window due to a lot of noise and fine dust , including cars on the north side of the riverside and the Olympic Boulevard . In addition, if you live on the lower floor of the Han River apartment, it is often difficult due to the noise of the Han River Park outing and the odor caused by food waste.

6.2. suicide spot
The Han River has the title of being the representative river of Korea, but also has the dark nickname of being a hot spot for suicide .
According to an SBS special, about 2,400 bodies are discovered nationwide each year, and about one-third of them cannot be identified .[62] Because of this, the police and 119 rescue teams in charge of surveillance are having a hard time.
However, contrary to this notoriety, the Han River is actually a place with a low suicide success rate. As of 2018, the survival rate from a jump from a bridge over the Han River reached 96.7%, and since 2014, the survival rate has never fallen below 95%. What this means is that when 100 people attempted to commit suicide, 97 survived. The reason the survival rate is so high is because the Han River in Seoul is not very deep. Usually, the water level of the Han River is 5m, but in winter it drops to 4m and in summer it rises to 6m. If the water level of the Han River exceeds 7m, it is a serious situation. In addition, the railings of the bridges crossing the Han River are structurally made difficult to climb, thereby physically hindering suicide.
And because there are so many suicide attempts, as briefly mentioned, public officials and employees are keeping an eye on them, working in shifts, checking CCTV, and 119 is always on standby . As can be seen from many experiences, if you wander aimlessly on the bridge, a police car will come and ask you what happened, and the moment you climb up the railing to jump to the ground, the police and 119 will come right away. After a series of efforts, the suicide success rate in the Han River has decreased, but the balloon effect continues to occur, with other high-rise buildings and rivers in other regions bearing this stigma .
For this reason, “I’m going to the Han River” regardless of whether it’s online or offline.[63] The expression has become a slang meaning ‘ going to commit suicide ’ and has also been used as a black comedic meme. Also, because of this dark nickname, it is also called a place where the entrance to the other world mainly opens. Or, in a similar story, there is a joke that there is a life reset button at the bottom of the Han River and you can start your life again by pressing it, and it is also connected with the drip that you can stop doing it from the 2020s.[64]

7.5. Han River Bike Road
The bicycle road along the Han River runs from the junction of the Ara Waterway to the Chungju Dam, and is visited by many people who traverse the country . In particular, the road right under the southern end of Seongsan Bridge is the most difficult part.[68] There is a bike path at the north end and a bike path at the south end. The easiest part to cross is Jamsu Bridge , and traffic is high nationwide.
Be careful because it is full of Hangang riders who represent the so-called 'I'll pass by~' and Ttareungi who take selfies with one arm while riding. In particular, it is a good idea to ride on the right side of the bike path, because many Han River riders pass without slowing down.[69] For the same reason, you must be careful when turning left. This is because, among Han River riders who are fast, it is difficult to brake immediately due to the limitations of bicycle brakes even if they apply the brakes. Fortunately, the number of clubs and drunk riders riding in two rows has decreased due to crackdowns.

[1] Article 5 of the Foreign Language Translation and Notation Guidelines of Public Terms, "1. In principle, the entire Korean name is written as a Roman and presented the meaning of the later elements. In this case, the first letter of the meaning of the semantic station is written as an uppercase. Example Han River Hangang River ……". In this case, however, it is pointed out that the interpretation of the Han River will be a layer of the Han River. In the English Wikipedia, he uses Han River , and sometimes calls it 'The Han'. In British English, it is also used as River Han.[2] Including the tributaries, all the Gangwon Special Self -Governing Province in the west, except for Donghae -si, Sokcho -si and Yangyang -gun, located only in the east side of Baekdudaegan , only the tributaries . Representatives are surprisingly many, including Hwasuk -myeon, Sangju -si, Gaeun -eup, Dong -eup, and Namdae -ri, Buseok -myeon, Yeongju -si, and Uguchi -ri, Chunyang -myeon, Bonghwa -gun. When included as the Han River water system up to the Imjin River water system, Muncheon -si and Hwanghaebuk -do Some of the Geumcheon -gun can be seen as the Han River water system. Even Muncheon was in the past . As a result, the Han River has water system in all Chosun Paldo area except Jeolla -do and Pyeongan -do within the Korean Peninsula.[3] The Nakdong River also originates in this area. Valley Gumryongso , located between Daedeoksan and Hambaeksan Mountain, is the most famous, and it is pointed out that the old tree and the sugar gum fountain are upstream.[4] The main stream is the Namhan River. In the case of the Bukhan River, it comes from Geumgangsan Mountain .[5] This point is often referred to as the ' dumul head '.[6] It is based on the main stream, the Namhan River.[7] Namhan River 25,594㎢ + Bukhan River 10,739㎢[8] The flood period, especially in late June to early September, the water level rises and reaches more than 10m.[9] Water resources status and outlook based on previous years' data[10] In the fountain map, the South Korean region shows that the Han River and the Nakdong River have and the rest of the river occupy the basin.[11] It is the only area among the local governments that pass the Han River .[12] There are many big cities around the world, such as the Sen River in Paris , the Thames River in London , and the Chao Praya River in Thailand, but there are few cases of wider than the Han River. This is why the bridges for pedestrians are mainly developed in the urban rivers in Europe , which is very narrow , while the bridge centered on the Han River is common .[13] It is 870m wide near Jamsil Bridge .[14] The width near Odusan Fortress is 2100m.[15] There are some who mistakenly believe that Han means the Han Dynasty and argue that "since it is a Korean river, not the Han Dynasty's river, it should be changed to Han, not Han," but both Han and Han were simply used in Korea to transliterate the original language of ancient Korean . If you really want to change the name to Han River, the Minister of Environment can designate the name for the Han River, which is a national river, according to Article 7 of the River Act. Related articles[16] It is the Kyunggang of the Gyeonggang merchant.[17] From the beginning, only the walls were built perfunctorily, with little defensive value. The defensive role lies elsewhere.[18] However, in most cases, there is no such distinction in the period before King Geunchogo or at the end of the Three Kingdoms period. There is also a counterargument that it was not in its heyday because it occupied the Han River, but because it was in its heyday. And unless they occupied the entire Korean peninsula like Goryeo and Joseon, the three sons' grain transportation through the Han River would be meaningless, so it is difficult to think about the role of the Han River during the Joseon Dynasty.[19] Coincidentally, this order is the same as the order of destruction of each of the three kingdoms.[20] In particular , the example of the Naje Alliance is very clear. At the time when Goguryeo was occupying the Han River basin, the two joined forces to drive out Goguryeo, but after that, they broke the alliance and fought bitterly to take possession of the Han River, leading to the death of King Seong of Baekje. It broke out, and Goguryeo and Baekje formed an alliance against Silla, which won the war and took over the Han River basin.[21] Originally, in China, Yangtze River , Yellow River , Huaihe River, and Jishu were designated as four poisons and considered sacred.[22] However, there are cases where you can swim as an event.[23] The raw water pumped from Paldang Dam also contains a lot of impurities. You can see this with your own eyes by visiting a water purification plant in the metropolitan area.[24] As people working in the construction industry know, the best material for mixing concrete is river sand. This is because the particles are coarse and contain little salt, so it mixes easily and requires less work, such as washing, compared to sea sand. The price of river sand also varies depending on the upstream, middle, and downstream. In the case of the Han River, the sand above Paldang Dam, which has little salinity, is of the highest quality, while the sand below Singok Weir is relatively poor quality due to the high salinity and many pollutants due to the influence of the tide. However, currently, because so much aggregate is extracted from the Han River, the aggregate itself is not available, and the upper part of Paldang Dam is often prohibited due to water supply protection areas, so it is quite difficult to obtain Han River sand.[25] However, because water transportation on the Han River was discontinued following the Korean War, it currently relies on cargo traffic from the highway and Incheon Port.[26] Excluding parts of Guarim-dong and Mokgam-dong , which are basins of Mokgamcheon, a tributary of Han River and Anyangcheon.[27] Excluding parts of Iljuk-myeon, Juksan-myeon, and parts of Samjuk-myeon[28] Sindae Reservoir - Woncheonricheon - Hwanggujicheon - Gasancheon Stream flows through some areas of Sanghyeon- dong.[29] To be precise, Tancheon runs through parts of Dongbaek-dong, Cheongdeok-dong, Eonnam-dong, Mabuk-dong, and Bojeong-dong in the Guseong-eup area. The Giheung-eup area passes by the Osancheon Stream .[30] The center of Cheoin -gu , commonly called downtown Yongin , is located south of the center of Giheung-gu in terms of latitude, but unexpectedly belongs to the Han River system.[31] Historically, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province until the Joseon Dynasty Utongsu , located at the foot of Odaesan Mountain in Pyeongchang-gun, was considered the source of the Han River.[32] Jamsil is a representative load island, and Bamseom Island , Seonyudo Island , and Nodeul Island were also quite large load islands in the past, enough for people to live in, but their size has now decreased due to the demolition for the development of Yeouido . In addition to the development of Yeouido , this has a strong military purpose of fortifying Seonyudo and Nodeul Island to intentionally make crossing the Han River difficult. In fact, Seonyudo and Nodeul Island have unusually large and high embankments.[33] Architect Hyeonjun Yoo expressed this opinion on his personal YouTube channel. #[34] At this time, Cheonggyecheon , not the entire Han River, was the main water source.[35] Right now, the Nakdong River in Busan is full of rice fields in the Gangseo-gu area beyond the Nakdong River. Only recently has the restricted development zone been abolished and large-scale new town construction is underway, but most citizens perceive it as a different living area. Of course, the Han River was like that before Gangnam development.[36] It is the same letter as Hanyang , one of Seoul's old names . Both cities were built on the north side of the river, so they were named after the Chinese character '陽', which refers to the place on the north side of the river.[37] In fact, in the past, it was not easy to cross a large river, so if a wide river passed between two cities, it became a different city. Therefore, cities with long history do not often have large rivers passing through them, and it can be said that the integration of Wuhan and the expansion of Gangnam in Seoul were only possible because technology had advanced to the point where large bridges could be built in modern times.[38] Strictly speaking, the water volume and width of the Han River passing through Seoul were artificially increased by building an underwater weir.[39] The official water quality of the Han River is classified as Grade 2 water, and it is among the cleanest rivers in world-class megacities. Considering that the water quality of many foreign rivers, such as the Thames River in London and the Seine River in Paris, is currently quite poor due to aging and privatization of sewage treatment facilities, this is something that can be considered positive.[40] However, as of 2025, it appears that Seoul City and Gyeonggi Province will deploy civil servants to clean up trash. In any case, if trash is left to accumulate, it can not only impede the flow of water but also have a negative impact on the Shingok underwater weir installed nearby.[41] The area of the Han River from Ttukseom in Seoul to Yanghwanaru was called 'Gyeonggang (京江)', and grains and goods coming to Seoul were transported or traded.[42] It doesn't follow right away. Turn left at Sampae Intersection and use Gosan-ro to connect to Gangbyeonbuk-ro.[43] Yongsan ↔ Noryangjin section ( Hangang Railroad Bridge ). Additionally, regular trains (including KTX) also cross the Han River via the Han River Railroad Bridge .[44] Dangsan ↔ Hapjeong ( Dangsan Railroad Bridge ) and Jamsil Naru ↔ Gangbyeon ( Jamsil Railroad Bridge ) cross the Han River twice.[45] Oksu ↔ Apgujeong section ( Dongho Bridge ).[46] Dongjak ↔ Ichon section ( Dongjak Bridge ).[47] Jayang ↔ Cheongdam section ( Cheongdam Bridge ).[48] Yeouinaru ↔ Mapo, Gwangnaru ↔ Cheonho, passes through the Han River twice.[49] Jangja Lake Park ↔ Amsa Historical Park section.[50] When extended to Pungyang in the future, the Shinmisa ↔ current section will be passed through an undersea tunnel.[51] Neunggok ↔ Gimpo Airport section.[52] Seoul Forest ↔ Apgujeong Rodeo section.[53] When opened, the section between Seoul Station and Samsung is scheduled to pass through the underwater tunnel.[54] Yongsan ↔ Yeouido section.[55] Wangsimni ↔ Samsung section[56] Yongsan ↔ Gwangmyeong section.[57] Gwangheungchang ↔ Seoyeoido section.[58] When extended to Yongsan, the Sinsa ↔ Dongbinggo section is scheduled to pass through an underwater tunnel.[59]
[60] If you just want to receive the data, you can get it here .[61] In fact, in the 20th presidential election, the results of the Seoul Metropolitan City election were divided into autonomous districts near the Han River + Gangnam District 3 vs. the rest of the region.[62] Not all suicides , of course . The bodies of those who died after being washed away by floods in the Han River basin are also included in this statistics. Among the corpses brought in, some are presumed to be from North Korea.[63] It is often described as 'Han River water temperature'.[64] Some people say that it's enough to save it as a derivative form .[65] At the top of the Peace Dam, the road through which Pyeonghwa Road passes.[66] In the past, a so-called 'Shaking Bridge' existed as the first Gangchon Bridge just west of it, but it was dismantled due to the risk of collapse, and now only the piers at both ends remain as traces.[67] In fact, it is a bridge connecting Daeseong-ri and Samhoe-ri in Cheongpyeong-myeon.[68] This is because both sides are blocked by walls and the sea breeze blows in.[69] Lack of safety awareness is a problem, but most riders do not slow down because it takes a lot of stamina to slow down and then speed up again.
