1. outline

Curling is a ball game played on ice, that is, on ice . The association is also World Curling , Korea Curling Federation[2] ( Korea Disabled Curling Association ) exists separately.[3] On a similar principle, ice hockey is also not part of the Korea Skating Federation . However, when winter sports are broadly classified as snow/ice, they are classified as ice. It is a sport played on ice, but instead of skates, specially designed competition shoes are worn.[4] , where four players form a team in an ice-covered stadium called a house.[5] Although it is a game in which players compete to score points by throwing stones at a target, the general public thinks of curling as a game of brooming , using the ice as a broom . For reference, in the West, it is more often compared to chess . 'Chess on Ice' Curling Catch-up It is a sport that competes on how many of your side's pieces can be left inside the circle and how much further the opponent's stones can be knocked out of the circle. The rules are simple and easy to see, so it is easy to have fun if you concentrate.

2. principle

Accurately throwing stones is the most important thing, but proper sweeping (the act of wiping and melting pebbles on the ice with a broom) can reduce the frictional force to adjust the distance the stone has already thrown, as well as change the direction by changing the direction of the sweep. may be Therefore, a high-level curling team is good at sweeping as well as throwing.

3. history

Curling is a type of folk game enjoyed by rolling stones when ice freezes on rivers and lakes in Scotland (United Kingdom) before modern times, and has developed into a modern sport . This game was transformed into a more modern sporting event by Scottish immigrants who immigrated to Canada , and later developed into a sport with indoor stadiums. Curling was first held at the Winter Olympics at the 1st Chamonix Games in 1924 , and was adopted as a demonstration sport at the 1932 Lake Placid Games , but was not adopted for a long time. Then, after going through the process of being adopted as a demonstration sport in Calgary in 1988 and Albertville in 1992 , it became an official sport at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics .[6]

Curling in 1909 . Canada Ontario . Back then, curling was done by brooming with a real broom .
In fact, even after changing to the official sport, only the material and shape were changed, but used such a broom . The broom used by attaching a fiber pad is far later .

4. game rules

4.1. 4 person group exhibition

The basics of curling in an infographic

The current rules were created by Canada , which made curling a sport .
  1. Each end consists of a total of 16 pitches, with each team taking turns throwing 8 pitches (2 pitches per player) .
  2. At the end of an end, the team whose stones are closest to the center of the house (the button) wins that end.
  3. Only the end win team scores. One point per stone located closer to the button than the opponent's stones close to the button in the house . Therefore, the score can be scored in one end.[7]
  4. If there are no stones in the house, or if the number 1 stones of both teams are the same distance from the center , it is a blank end and neither team scores. The situation where the blank end came out because the distance is the same.
  5. If you score in the end, you will be overwhelmed by the team that you did not score in the next end. In other words, the team scored in the end is the next end. However, when the blank end occurs, the next end of the helmet will not change, and the next end of the Blank End will be pitched in the last blank end.[8]
  6. Ten ends ( limit time[9] 38 minutes per team)[10] The team that scored more by proceeding to win will win.
  7. If there is a tie after the end of the 10th end, the 11th end will be played as an extended end. The first/second play is determined according to the result of the 10th end as the original rule, and the time limit is reset to 4 minutes and 30 seconds for both teams.[11] Additionally, both teams may use an additional time-out. The team that scores points in the 11th end wins, and if a blank end occurs, an extended end is played again.

The basic scoring rules are simple, but it is a brain sport where you have to think about the order of throwing, the placement of thrown stones, and the number of stones remaining . 'Brooming', the first movement that comes to mind when people think of curling, is more accurately called brushing . The player who does this is called a sweeper, and the brush is called a broom. The ice surface of a curling stadium has pebbles, which are tiny ice particles.[12] It interferes with the stone's progress, but if you clean the pebble with a broom, you can control the speed and direction of the stone . Sweeping action using this broom is very important as it can change the speed and direction of the thrown stone slightly. If a player touches a stone with a brush or foot, if it is a stone in progress, it will be invalidated. If it is a stone that has stopped inside the house, the game will resume after the players reach an agreement and return to the original position. The referee only intervenes when there is no agreement. If you have the hammer, which is the right to throw the 16th stone, the last pitch in an end, you can end the end by hitting the opponent's strongest stone, which makes scoring easier. The worst case scenario is when you give up a point to your opponent despite having the hammer, which is called a steal . Due to the nature of the game in which the first and second players take turns, a strategy can be used to immediately hit the stone that the opponent threw just before. If the game progresses this way, it becomes boring , so special rules are applied to prevent this situation.
  • Free Guard Zone Rule: A rule for the space between the tee line and hog line, excluding the house, and stones in that space are considered to be in the free guard zone. From one end to the 5th throw, the opponent's stone in this free guard zone cannot be removed from the back of the house. If the opponent's stone is removed by mistake, the thrown stone is dropped and the stone that was pushed out is returned to its original position. It is possible to push the opponent's stone without removing it. (Until the 2017-2018 season, it was applied up to the 4th stone, but from the 2018-2019 season, it was strengthened to the 5th stone.)
  • No-Tick Shot Rule: Among the stones in the free guard zone, stones that touch the center line receive more special protection. Until the 5th throw, the opponent's stone touching this center line cannot be pushed out of the center line. If this situation occurs, the opposing team can choose between 1) removing the thrown stone and putting the moved stone back in place, or 2) leaving all the stones in place.[13] (This regulation applies from the 2021-2022 season.)

A team consists of lead, second, third, and fourth according to the order of pitching, and there are skip and vice skip as special roles. The skip is the player who leads the team and decides the strategy, and usually doubles as the force, but the skip does not necessarily have to pitch last. The Swedish women's national curling team at the 2014 Sochi Olympics was skipped by Reid. Since the manager or coach can come down only once during the game, it is also the skip's role to understand the flow of the entire game and devise a strategy. A vice skip is a player who assists the skip in formulating game strategies and assumes the role of the skip when the skip pitches. Likewise, the vice skip is usually taken by the third position, but this is not fixed either.

4.2. mix double curling

There are also mixed doubles. In the Olympics, it was first adopted at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics . The term mixed double is usually translated as 'mixed doubles' or 'mixed doubles' in other ball sports, and these sports usually use this term to distinguish them from singles matches. Perhaps because curling does not have singles, the Korean Curling Federation simply labels it as mixed doubles, so they followed that example. During the PyeongChang Olympics, some commentators used the expression 'mixed duo'. The rules for this are slightly different from the culling described above. First of all, there are only two players. As the name suggests, there is one man and one woman. Since there are no substitutes, two people must go to the end. It is shortened to 8 ends and 5 stones are thrown in each end. One person throws stones 1 and 5, and the other person throws stones 2, 3, and 4. Since there are two players, when one plays the role of pitching, the other plays the role of skipping, and the pitcher does the sweeping. If necessary, the skip's role can be given up and two people can sweep together. The total time limit is also short at 22 minutes per team. (Normal curling lasts 38 minutes/10 ends) Five stones are pitched, but in reality, each team uses six, and before the end begins, one stone for each team is placed in a pre-designated location.[14] The first player starts by placing the stone in a guard position in front of the center, and the second player starts by placing the stone slightly behind the center of the house. Pre-placed stones can also be used in scoring, so the theoretical maximum score per end is 6. A game where 6 points were actually scored in one end (Pyeongchang Olympic qualifier/Switzerland's power play situation)

File:center guar...

In the picture above, Team A goes first and Team B goes last. In the case of the team that goes first, unless there is a separate rule specifically set in the competition, they can choose one of three options. They can choose to use 7.5 feet (2.286m) from the end of the house as the reference point and pull 3 feet (0.915m) toward the house or push 3 feet toward the hog line. However, this point decision must be completed before the start of the game and the same point must be used throughout the game. In the case of the second team, the center line is divided exactly into two and the stone is placed so that the end point hangs over the back end of the 4-foot circle (red circle). If you follow this, the stone will be placed right behind the button. In addition, because the stones are placed in advance for each end, there is a rule added only to the mixed double called the power play , which can be declared only once per team and can only be used in the team's 'second ball' position. When a power play is declared, the first two stones placed are pushed to the sides rather than the center line. It is a rule that is absolutely advantageous to the team going first, as the guard stone blocking the center line, which is an advantageous element for the team going first, is eliminated and one corner guard is provided, which is the guard needed to score multiple points. This creates an opportunity to score multiple points. (Usually, in the case of an end consisting of a power play, the scoreboard cells of the team that applied are marked differently, such as by filling in a color or putting a border on them.)

File:power play

The three options in the power play situation are determined as follows. The basic stone placement and distance are all the same, but the feature is that the guard stones are placed 3 feet 5/6/7 inches apart from the center line. In addition, in response to this guard stone placement, the succeeding team's house stone is also moved and placed to provide protection. However, in this case, unlike the basic arrangement, it is moved and placed in front of the tee line. Also, unlike a typical curling game, take-out is possible starting from the 4th stone (2nd stone for the team behind). This is different from the general curling rules that provide a free guard zone. And unlike general curling, where a blank end (an end in which neither team scores) occurs, the next end is given the right to play in the next end, in the case of mixed doubles, if a blank end occurs, the rule is established so that the team that goes first in that end can decide the order of attack in the next end. Other than that, the rest is the same as regular curling.

4.4. Similarities with other sports

Due to the fact that it is turn-based and both teams match and hit the ball (stone) with each other to determine the ranking with the final position, some similarities with other sports stand out.
  • Board games : chess , omok , baduk , etc. It is similar in that it is turn-based and requires you to anticipate the next move. Of course, other turn-based sports such as baseball , billiards, and lawn ball also have some of these characteristics.
  • Billiards : It is similar in that you roll something on the playing field to hit your opponent and push them away. In particular, the sound of billiards (especially pocket billiards) comes out naturally when you see the combination shot made with the spin of the curling stone and precise angle calculation. Perhaps that's why curlers are said to be good at hitting pocket balls. For this reason, 'billiards/chess on ice' is sometimes referred to as a nickname for curling.
  • Bowling : Compared to other ball games, a much harder and heavier ball is thrown straight to the desired destination in a given direction on a flat, long lane, the pitch is invalid if it falls into the boundary lines at both ends of the lane, spin can be given to the pitch, lane conditions are important, and it is a foul if the pitch goes beyond a certain space.
  • Lawnball : This is the sport most similar to curling in terms of game rules and scoring method. If we were to exaggerate a bit, it would be believable to say that they changed the stadium material and arranged the game rules accordingly. So in Western countries, curling is called “ice bowling.”[17] ", and as the Winter Olympics season approaches, articles discussing the similarities between curling and lawnball appear. (For example) Korean curlers Lee Dong-ha , Jeong Seung-won , and Bang Min- ja are former lawnball players, so the similarity can be felt indirectly. For more information, refer to the lawnball document .
  • Boccia : When explaining the rules of boccia as a sport for the disabled, curling is often compared.
  • Archery and shooting : Similar in that the stones must be placed closer to the center of the target (house) than the opposing team.

5. Gyeonggi Culture

Curling is a game of skill and tradition. Not only is it fun to see accurate pitches, but it's also nice to observe the long tradition of curling, where the true spirit of the game is imbued. Curlers play to win, but never underestimate their opponents. True colors do not confuse or hinder opponents, and choose to lose rather than win unfairly.
(Curling is a game of skill and of tradition. A shot well executed is a delight to see and it is also a fine thing to observe the time-honoured traditions of curling being applied in the true spirit of the game. Curlers play to win, but never to humble their opponents. A true curler never attempts to distract opponents, nor to prevent them from playing their best, and would prefer to lose rather than to win unfairly.)

The color does not intentionally break the rules of the game or disregard its traditions. If someone does something wrong, he himself is the first to report the violation.
(Curlers never knowingly break a rule of the game, nor disrespect any of its traditions. Should they become aware that this has been done inadvertently, they will be the first to divulge the breach.)

Although the main purpose of a curling event is to compete against the relative skill of players, the Spirit of Curling requires good sportsmanship, a kind heart and noble conduct.
(While the main object of the game of curling is to determine the relative skill of the players, The Spirit of Curling demands good sportsmanship, kindly feeling and honourable conduct.)

This spirit applies to the interpretation of the rules of the game as well as to the conduct of all participants on and off the field.
(This spirit should influence both the interpretation and the application of the rules of the game and also the conduct of all participants on and off the ice.)

Full text of The Spirit of Curling in the World Curling Federation Rules
Although it is not a rule, curling has its own unique culture. Curling is a game that particularly emphasizes sportsmanship. At that level, criticizing or making fun of the other team is absolutely taboo, and even the so-called bad temper , which is the act of openly liking the other team's mistakes, is also taboo.[18] However, there is no need to be cool even if you win a gold medal. Unlike other field sports, you will not be criticized for withdrawing from the game ( taking off your gloves and shaking hands ) in the middle of the game if you think you have no hope of winning. In fact, it is considered unmannered to drag on and continue playing even when you have no hope of winning.[19] In Baduk, if the difference between the houses is large and there are no more chances to win, you do not make a decision and declare a no-game hand. In chess, if you have no chance of winning, you stop the clock and abstain.[20] In RTS, if defeat is certain, it can be said to be a similar culture to hitting GG and exiting the game.

Not only does it emphasize sportsmanship, the rules are simple and it is very easy to determine victory or defeat, and due to the nature of the turn-based sport, the pace is slow, leaving little room for cheating or foul play, so intervention by referees and coaches is extremely minimal. In most cases, the players handle the matter by agreement and then tell the referee, and the referee writes it down. The referee only makes a decision when the players do not reach an agreement.[21] There is only one case in which the referee actively intervenes each time: LSD (Last Stone Draw), which is performed before the start of the game to determine the first ball to follow.[22] Therefore, unlike referees in other games who actively intervene, referees sit there feeling like a kind of manager and step out only when necessary. Coaches can come down and chat with players only once per game, when the players make their own decisions and call time, and only during the intermission after 5 ends (mixed doubles, 4 ends for wheelchair curling). (Also, if conditions allow for the structure of the stadium, it is additionally permitted to briefly talk to the players below in their original positions during the short maintenance time given between ends.) Other than that, no attempts to intervene in the game, such as speaking or sending hand signals to players during the game, are allowed. Electronic devices are also prohibited, except for stop positions that only allow simple time measurement. In other words, you cannot do coaching during the game, which is taken for granted in other sports, and you cannot even signal to call time for the operation.

Players may remove stones that go to the back of the house and have no effect on the game, or if the outcome is obvious even before the stones come to a complete stop, they remove them and quickly prepare for the next end , and the opposing team does not protest against this. In most sports, doing something like this is a serious violation. It is also a sport that requires some level of silence in the stadium. When a player starts in a record match, serves in tennis, or shoots an arrow in archery, it is polite to keep quiet to help the player concentrate until the thrower gets into a position to push the stone and lets go. (Of course, even so, realistically, you can't stop cheering from a fantastic shot in the next lane.) For example, when the coach comes down or goes up after the operation time, and a player is pushing a stone in the opposite lane in the passage, he stops and stands there, releases the stone, and continues on his way.[23] Therefore, during the game, on-site broadcasting is prohibited, and only before the game starts, after all games are over, and in the finals, games are played in one lane, and only during intermission are on-site broadcasts.

6.1. curling stone

Curling stone

The weight of one stone is 19.96 kg. The material used is granite , usually from Scotland , Wales and Canada . According to the Korea Sports Council , official competition stones are very expensive , costing 1.8 million won per piece. However, it is said to be strong enough to be used for over 100 years unless intentionally broken. You may be asking, “Do I need to buy stones to play curling?” These are usually rented at the stadium.[24] All stones used in international competitions are from Scotland or Wales . In the past, only granite mined from Ailsa Craig Island, located on the west coast of Scotland, was used. While other granites have a low density and expand and crack in the process of absorbing moisture from the ice and then refreezing, granite quarried from Craig Island is said to meet all conditions. This granite is famous as the hardest stone in the world and is nicknamed 'Blue Hone' because of its light blue color . However, as the island was designated as a wildlife sanctuary, restrictions were placed on quarrying. The stone had to be excavated by blasting it with explosives , but this blasting work became difficult.[25] In 2013 , quarrying took place for the first time in 11 years, and a generous amount of 2,000 tons was extracted , meeting the expected demand until at least 2020. The most recent quarrying took place in 2020. Stones made of granite quarried here were used in the 2006 , 2010 , 2014 , 2018 , and 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics .

Granite from the quarry at Trefo in Wales is also used. Trepoic acid was used in the 2002 Winter Olympics .

When throwing a stone, you must remove your hand before crossing the hog line, and the stones used for official games are equipped with electronic equipment to determine this. If you release your hand before the hog line, a green light will illuminate, and if you release your hand after that (a foul), a red light will illuminate on the handle. It is said that sometimes the signal machine breaks down during the game. Stones cannot be replaced while the end is in progress, and instead, a referee is present and visually determines whether a foul has been committed. And, after the end is over, it is replaced with a new stone. At the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, a situation occurred in the match between Canada and Korea where Canada's stone broke. As a side note, 64 curling stones made of blue horn are in Gangneung City . The purchase price of one stone is approximately 1.25 million won , and the total price of 64 stones is over 80 million won. As of 2022, Gangneung Curling Center even installs a web camera inside the warehouse to check the condition of the stones in real time. The stones used by both teams are identified by the color of their handles . In South Korea , practice curling stones are manufactured at the Geochang Granite Research Center located in Geochang-gun . It is said that as of 2022, the center's current facilities will not be able to produce stones for official competitions because they cannot produce the necessary precision. #

6.2. Broome

A tool used to control the direction and speed of the stone. The literal translation of broom is broom , and as you can see from the photo above, actual brooms were used in the past. It is used to wipe away (sweeping) pebbles scattered on the floor for friction. The ice on the curling sheet is not as smooth as in skating. At the end of the ice-making process, water is sprinkled to create rough ice. When you sweep with a broom, the ice in that area melts slightly, reducing friction and allowing you to control the direction or speed of travel. Also, if you wipe away pebbles and foreign substances from the path, there will be less curl (rotation), so the stone will move straighter, and friction will be reduced, allowing the stone to travel farther. If you don't wipe the pebble, it will have the opposite effect. The name is called a broom , as shown in the early photo above , but it has been improved to become a brush or mop (?) for cleaning the floor.[26] It took the same form. A fibrous pad is attached to the bottom. Pads are consumables, so they are used once during a competition and then discarded. For practice purposes, some things last a month or two longer. There is a story in the Korean curling world that, because the price of disposable pads was too expensive, they washed them or used them by picking up ones thrown away by foreign players. The price of the broom is also around 250,000 to 300,000 won, the price of the pad, which is a consumable, is around 40,000 won, and there are some manufacturers where you can buy only the broom head part separately. There are three companies competing for equipment such as brooms and curling shoes, but the pad specifications are different for each company, so brooms and pads must be purchased from the same manufacturer.

6.3. curling shoes

When playing curling, you wear specially designed curling shoes. One side of the shoe is equipped with a plate made of plastic (usually Teflon ) to make it easy to slip, and the other side is made of a non-slip material. For players who pitch with their right hand, the sole of the left shoe is made to be easy to slip, and the sole of the right shoe is made to be difficult to slip. Also, when sweeping, an anti-slip tool called a gripper is installed. There is a story that even after curling was introduced to Korea, special shoes were not available for a long time, so acrylic plates were used on regular sneakers. Curling shoes for players cost about 400,000 to 500,000 won, and supplies for the shoes alone cost 40,000 to 50,000 won. It is essential to select the Teflon disk attached to the sliding side, and if you purchase overshoes separately, it costs about 150,000 won. This is why in the past, when circumstances were difficult, acrylic plates were used.

7. game terms

7.1. Stadium

File:external/ww...
Description based on the picture above.
  • Hog Line – A short, dark vertical line. It is drawn in two places. When throwing, you must remove your hand from the stone before it crosses the hog line on the throwing side. If you throw without removing your hand, the stone will be invalid. Also, if the thrown stone does not cross the hog line drawn on the house side, it will be invalidated.[27]
  • Center Line - A long horizontal line drawn.
  • Tee Line - A short vertical line drawn through the center of the house. A stone that has crossed the tee line can be swept by the opposing side, but in this case, only one player can sweep it.
  • Back Line - Line shortly at the end of the house. Stones beyond the backline are invalid and removed. For reference, the stone that touches the boundary line (side line) on both sides is also removed.
  • Button/Tee – The innermost circle of the house, located where the center line and tee line meet. More precisely, tee refers to the starting point and button refers to the destination point.
  • House - Any area inside the outermost 12' circle. When the end is completed, the team that placed the stone closest to the center gets a point, and additional points are awarded as much as the number of stones located inside the house and inside the opponent's stone. In the picture above, even if you cross the blue line, you are judged to be inside the house. In the picture above, the red circle is drawn so that the center can be clearly seen, and has nothing to do with the score.
  • Free Guard Zone -Parts except the house (half circle) from the hog line to the tee line. Until the team's team three times and the second team throws twice, the opponent's stone in this area cannot be removed. If you remove it by mistake, the thrown stone will be dropped. However, it is possible to push it slightly without removing.

7.2. type of shot

  • Guard – A shot that places a stone in front of or inside the house to protect your team's stones. If you send a stone into the house without a guard first, there is a high chance that the opponent will kick it out with a takeout.
  • Draw – A shot that accurately sends a stone to the desired area inside the house without touching any other stones. It may seem the easiest, but the mental burden is high and the level of difficulty is high. In the latter half of the game, there are times when a difference of just a few centimeters can decide the game by one point, so skipping is especially useful.
  • Freeze – A shot that is close to your team's stone or opponent's stone.
  • Take out - A shot that hits the opponent's stone and removes it or sends it to another location. Modifiers such as double, triple, quadruple, etc. are added in front of the number. For example, if you hit two stones with one shot, it is called a double take out . Likewise, hitting three stones is called a triple take out .
    • PEEL - A shot that makes the stone that is guarded during the take -out shot and the magnetic stone falls into the side line to make a stone that you can't use.
    • Hit & Stay – A shot that hits the opponent's stone, takes it out, and keeps your stone in place of the opponent's stone. It is often used when hitting the opponent's stone in the house, and it is also a shot that is used when we need our guard instead of the opponent's guard.
    • Hit & Roll – A shot in which the opponent's stone is hit and taken out, and the thrown stone is moved and landed in the desired location. The most common case is to move the thrown stone behind the guard after knocking out an opponent's stone that is not protected by a guard in the house. Also known as Take & Roll.
  • Raise - shots that use the stone in front of the house by pitching. It is a shot that requires accurate pitching because the entry angle varies depending on the right area. In general, it is divided into tap back and run back.
    • Tap Back -A shot that moves the stone lightly and moves to a specific place. This shot is usually used when it is difficult to draw as a point that desires the shooter. It is also called push because it is a technology that is generally pushed.
    • Run Back -A shot that removes the stone in the back by using the stone in front of you. This shot is usually used when it is difficult to take out the opponent's stone directly.
  • Come-Around-A shot from the target position to avoid the opponent's stone. It is also used if you want to use your opponent's stone as a guard of your own stone.

7.3. etc

  • Blank end - Finishing with 0 points at the end. If a blank end occurs, the second ball is taken in the next end as well. It also refers to an operation that ends like this. This refers to a strategy of deliberately not scoring points and moving on to the next end with 0 points when there is a possibility that the team with the hammer, that is, the team with the second ball, may end up with a low score, such as 1 point, and give up the opportunity to the second ball. Also, since it is advantageous for your team to have a second ball in the 10th end, they sometimes use this strategy to take the even numbered end to the second ball.
  • End - In curling, it refers to a type of event in which each team competes with 8 stones, a total of 16 stones, in a circle based on the number of stones placed in the circle. There are 10 ends in one game.

8. player role

Curling is played by teams of four. Depending on the order of throwing, it is divided into lead, second, third, and force, and the skills emphasized by each role are slightly different. In addition, there are skips and vice skips corresponding to the captain and vice-captain, and due to the nature of the curling game, the weight increases as the last player throws, so usually the skip plays the force and the vice skip plays the third. And in case of emergency, the entry usually includes up to the 5th player.
  • Skip - Claim. He checks ice conditions, strategizes, directs operations, and leads the team.
  • Vice Skip – Vice-captain. It is the skip who gives strategy and instructions, but since the skip cannot give instructions on the last pitch he throws, the vice skip takes on the role of skip and gives instructions on speed and direction. When a player other than the skip pitches, the player sweeps instead of the player. In addition, they are responsible for scoring and recording scores, and negotiating with the other party in case of score disputes. When calculating scores, only the Vice Skip can be in the house.[28]
  • Lead – The player who throws first (1st and 2nd stones). They usually take on the role of brushing. Because of the free guard rule, the opponent's stone cannot be hit until the second throw, which means that the lead cannot hit the opponent's stone. Therefore, your guard or draw skills should be better than your take-out or power shot skills.
  • Second – The player who throws the second (3rd or 4th stone). It usually takes on a brushing role. Since it is the turn to remove the opponent's stone, you must be able to do take-out or fill.
  • Third – The player who throws the third (5th or 6th stone). It is mainly played by Vice Skip. He must be able to deliver particularly accurate pitches as he has to arrange the stones well for the all-important final shot.
  • Fourth - The fourth (7th and 8th stones) athletes. Depending on the situation, all kinds of shots should be done well, but compared to other players, the 'Draw' shot is largely required. If the previous players made a mistake, the next player may be able to make up for the next player, but the fourth player does not have any other players later, so the mistake will soon lead to a run. Skip is mostly a force, but depending on the team's configuration, the player with the highest accuracy of the shot is in charge.
  • Fifth - Candidate in case of emergency. You should be able to digest all positions without deep in each position. He is often a player or a rookie who has just joined the team. Also known as alter.

9. strategy

Due to the structure of curling, the second player who throws the last stone has an absolute advantage. Therefore, the basic concept of curling strategy starts from 'scoring as many points as possible when you have a hammer (second ball) that is easy to score .' Therefore, the strategy is different when going first and when going second.

9.1. go first

The first player plays with the primary goal of taking the hammer for only one point. When the opportunity arises, he also aims for a steal (the goal of the leading team). The blank end is generally not recommended for the first team because it is beneficial to the second team, but it is worth considering because it has the effect of stealing the opponent's chance once if they lead by a large margin. To this end, the first team uses a strategy to protect the button by blocking the center line, and the combination of the number 1 stone (a stone that can be scored) + a guard blocking the center line as a basic layout.

File:Curling Fir...

This arrangement is the basic paving stone. The number 1 stone for scoring is located on the button, and the center line guard is protecting the number 1 stone from being taken out.

9.2. after work

The game is played with the goal of scoring 2 or more points when hitting a second ball. If it is judged difficult to score multiple points, the next best option is to create a blank end and maintain the second ball. It is not advisable to score 1 point and end the end, but if a blank end cannot be created, a point must be scored. (If you do not score, it will be a steal and you will lose points.) To this end, the team holding the second ball must open the center line to make it easy to attack the button, and actively use corner guards to aim to leave several stones in the house. It is easy to understand if you think of it as the exact opposite of the drawing above. Since the last stone can be thrown, if you throw it to the button at the end, you win that end, so there is no need for a center line guard (=it is in the way, so it must be removed), and multiple scores are possible only if you leave a lot of stones in the house, so you need to set up guards on both sides to protect the stones located on both sides of the house. (corner guard)

9.3. etc

  • It is easy to mistake the act of setting up a guard as a defensive play , but setting up a guard is generally an offensive play . Conversely, taking the stone out looks like an offensive play because there is a visual description of 'striking the opponent's stone', but this side is a defensive play . If you don't create a variable by continuously taking stones out, even if you hold the first ball, only 1 point is given and the end is finished, so you won't lose a lot of points, but conversely, there are no stones left in the house, so you can't score a lot. In particular, the corner guard, which is built by missing the center line, is an important factor in scoring multiple points, such as using the corner guard to protect a stone that can be scored or to interfere with an opponent's button come-around shot. However, if there are more guards, it becomes easier to score more points when holding back balls, but if the points are taken away by stealing, the possibility of losing a large number of points increases, so it becomes a double-edged sword in many ways.
  • In general, it is common to pitch the stone in front of the tee unless it is an exception, such as takeout. If you pass the tee, your opponent can sweep it, and if the stone remains at the back of the house, it is more likely to be a back guard (blocking the back of the house), which is often effective in protecting the opponent's stone. In addition, the stones placed in front of the house can be used as a material for takeout in later pitches. This is because the helmet in a certain direction, the front of the house, removes the opponent's stone, and all of our stones can be left in the house.
  • If you are ahead in points, you can devise a strategy to prevent your opponent from scoring more points. For example, if you focus on taking out and emptying the house cleanly, you will have no choice but to be satisfied with 1 point even if you are holding the second ball, or create a blank end and promise to play the next end.
  • Even though it is the first attack, it is possible to set up a strategy to put a counterfire together without choosing a defensive strategy. In this case, there is a possibility of allowing the opponent to score multiple points, but on the contrary, it is a strategy like a double-edged sword with a high possibility of stealing away. Also, it exerts psychological pressure by making the last shot difficult for the opposing team's skip. Tim Kim also uses this strategy often, and tends to take away a lot of steals.

10. world curling tour

official website

In addition to competitions in which national teams participate, such as the Winter Olympics, Asian Winter Games, World Curling Championships , and Asia Pacific Curling Championships , there are various competitions in which individual teams participate. There is the World Curling Tour (WCT), centered in North America , and the Curling Championship Tour (CCT), centered in Europe. Combined, the two tours host more than 50 competitions in one season.[29] . Please note that although the host organization is different, all tour competitions are reflected in the WCT rankings the same way, and were integrated into the World Curling Tour in June 2017. Although there are differences for each competition, from as few as 8 to as many as 32 teams participate. The prize money ranges from a minimum of 5 million won to a maximum of 100 million won. What is unique about curling tour competitions is that among the preliminaries, there is a 'triple knockout' method instead of a round robin (full league) method. In short, it can be seen as a tournament with two repechage matches, but the double knockout method already has the disadvantage of being confusing from the perspective of looking at the bracket, but this is a step further, so it is quite complicated to the point where fans who look at the bracket wonder what this is. However, compared to the round robin method, fewer games are played relative to the number of participating teams, so in tour competitions with more than 20 teams, the triple knockout method is often adopted rather than the round robin method where teams are divided into groups.

A feature of the playoff format is that there is also a page playoff format in which significant preferential treatment is given to the top teams in the preliminary round. The winner of the 1st-2nd place match and the 3rd-4th place match will advance directly to the finals, and the loser of the 1st-2nd place match will play the semifinals against the winner of the 3rd-4th place match. Korean teams also participate in these tour competitions as part of overseas training. However, a separate participation fee is required, and it is said that organizers often refuse participation from teams whose skills have not been proven. The Uiseong International Curling Competition (WCT) is not only held overseas, but also in Korea in Uiseong-gun in August 2015.[30] and hosted the CCT Uiseong Masters Curling Championship (CCT) in March 2016 . Originally, it was planned to host tour competitions on a regular basis, but due to a lack of budget in Uiseong-gun at the time in 2016, the Gyeongbuk Curling Training Center experienced difficulties such as not being able to repair it in time despite a rain leak , so it could not become a regular competition. In 2018, Uiseong-gun appropriated a budget for the Uiseong International Curling Competition, but the Gyeongbuk Curling Association, which is in charge of operating the competition, refused to host the competition.[31] The Uiseong International Curling Cup was held at the end of September 2019.

The mixed curling championship, which consists of four teams of two men and women, started in 2015 instead of the European Mix Curling Championships, which had originally been held since 2005. It is held annually in September or October.

It is not an event supported by the Korea Curling Federation because it has a short history and is not an official Olympic event, but it has been participating since 2016 at the expense of the Gyeongbuk Sports Association.
  • bathchair
It started in 2002. It is usually held in February or March, but because it coincides with the Winter Paralympic Games , it is not held in the Paralympic year. A year before the Winter Paralympic Games are held, the event is held at a designated Paralympic venue to test the stadium and ice quality and to help athletes understand the venue.

12.1. country ranking

National rankings based on international competition results are provided on the World Curling Federation website. It is based on the performance of the last four seasons. This national ranking system was designed in 2006 by Switzerland's Patrick Huliman, a curling gold medalist at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and former vice president of the World Curling Federation, when he was the World Curling Federation public relations chairman, and was proposed by Sweden's Paul Algren ahead of the 2018-2019 season. was revised to Domestic media often cite national rankings, but because the sport has the nature of selecting the national team on a team basis and there is no guarantee that the same team will become the national team every time, the actual ranking of the team refers to the world team rankings provided by Curling Zone. It's better. The World Curling Federation also introduced a team ranking system for curling zones starting from the 2020-2021 season.

12.3. Canada

A country that is home to modern curling. More than half of the World Curling Tour's tournaments are held in Canada, and the Grand Slam is also held in Canada. It is the most popular country in the world, and the number of players registered with the Canadian Curling Association is as high as 2 million, and there are about 1,200 curling rinks, so it is said that curling is enjoyed as a daily sport. Starting from the second year of high school, physical education is also taught as a subject. Their previous results at the World Championships and Olympics are also top-notch. The Canadian men's and women's championships have separate names, 'Tim Hortons Brier' and 'Scoties Tournament of Herts', and they are so famous in the curling world that some non-Canadian curlers say it is their dream to watch this tournament.

In Saskatchewan , the provincial sport is curling. Ernie Richardson, who won the Scotch Cup, the predecessor to the Men's World Championship, four times, and his brothers are from Saskatchewan. The Canadian women's national team players who won the gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, when curling was first adopted as an official Olympic sport , were also from Saskatchewan. When Sandra Schmerler , who was the skip of the national team at the time , died young after battling cancer two years after the Nagano Olympics, all public institutions in Saskatchewan raised their flags at half-staff, and about 15,000 people gathered at her funeral to pay tribute. Manitoba ranks mid-ranking in Canada in terms of population, but competes for the top in terms of number of Brier and Scotties wins. In particular, the Canadian national team that won the women's division for the first time at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics was also from Manitoba, and Jennifer Jones , the skipper of the national team at the time , also holds the record for the most Grand Slam championships among active female skips.

Separate from the World Curling Tour rankings, there is a CTRS (Canadian Team Ranking System) that ranks national teams. It is usually used when determining qualifications for participation in the Olympic team selection competition. However, at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics , they lost to the rookie Korea team and only won one mixed doubles gold medal. The men advanced to the semifinals but received no medals, and the women did not even advance to the semifinals. It's as if Korea only won a no medal in Taekwondo. The real shock is that before the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, both the men's and women's national teams were on track to win Olympic medals. The men's team was aiming for a fourth consecutive gold medal after winning two consecutive silver medals, and Rachel Homan's team, which was the women's team, was considered a strong candidate for the championship because it was the first women's team to win all games at the 2017 World Championships before the Olympics. At the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the men's curling team won a bronze medal, but the women's and mixed teams failed to enter the medal range. For reference, as of 2025, the top three in order of all-time Olympic gold medals are Canada , Sweden , and the United Kingdom , and the top three in total order are Canada, Sweden, England, Switzerland , and Norway .

12.4. uk

Scotland, part of the United Kingdom , is the birthplace of curling, which was played on outdoor ice before the modern era. Thanks to this, it is popular and popular in Scotland even today, and like soccer, Scotland, England, and Wales participate separately in international competitions, but due to an agreement between the three countries, the British national team participating in the Olympics is limited to the Scottish team. At the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the men's team lost in a tiebreaker against Switzerland, and the women advanced to the semifinals but ended up with no medals, damaging its pride as the birthplace of curling. Skip Eve Muirhead of the women's national team has already won a bronze medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, making Skip the youngest Olympic medalist in curling for either men or women. Fortunately, at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the men's curling team won a silver medal and the women's curling team won a gold medal, restoring its status.

12.5. korea

Until the early 2010s, it was a non-mainstream stock with a significant portion of the general public unfamiliar with its name.[35] Beginning with the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and especially in Pyeongchang in 2018, the national women's curling team's team Kim won a silver medal, and awareness of the sport has soared as it has received great public attention.

12.6. japan

12.7. china

Although it was the last to join the World Curling Federation among Korea, China , and Japan, it grew rapidly as it was fostered as a small elite. As of 2021, it is the only one among Korea, China and Japan to have a record of winning the World Championships.[36] , the women's national team won a bronze medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, which preceded the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Harbin is the center of curling in China, and the Chinese national team is often represented by the Harbin curling team. Although curling is not limited to Harbin, the Harbin curling team is large enough to have 4 to 5 teams each for men and women.

  • Orange Dealership - A manga drawn by Bohemian K/Toshinori Sogabe. The writers claimed that the cartoon was drawn because of the protruding lower body of a woman pitching in curling. Completed in 4 volumes, probably not popular.
  • Wild (Animation) - At the beginning of the play, there is a scene where zoo animals play a curling match using turtles as stones. As a side note, the main character, Lion Sampson, is said to be a sports star who won the title for five consecutive seasons.
  • Curling Love - Japanese romantic comedy film released in 2007 . It tells the story of a Japanese actress who plays a minor role in her later years and meets a Korean male curling team player who has traveled to Japan. The learning side is Japanese, but the actual history of curling is unusual considering that Japan is older. Starring Kim Seung-woo and Kazue Fukiishi. As evidenced by the low awareness of curling, Kim Seung-woo's documents incorrectly titled the film as Killing Love. Curling Love is the English title, and the original Japanese title is 'Give me a wonderful night (素敵な夜、Bokunikudasai)'.
  • Kungya Kungya - In episode 12, which is unusual for a domestic animated film, Kungya, Han So-nyeo , and Dr. Park play a curling match. Since it is a comic, it also appears humorous.
  • Kona Yuki Fururi -Bloom Handle's 08 -year -old story is based on the high school female curling department of Youzhara. The story of the overall ice sheet is well melted in the story, but there is also a last route that is NTR that is NTR by female characters . A game where OP songs are more popular than games . #Listen to the illustrator, Peco was in charge.
  • Top Gear - Car curling was shown at Top Gear Live Amsterdam.
  • Princess Catch! Tiniping (Episode 8 <Cold, Cold Snowing Ping>) - At the beginning of the episode , Sapoonping , Areumping , and Ponyping VS Podeukping , Charmingping , and Nabiping were playing a game similar to curling by setting up a bare ground court of curling standards on the floor of Romi 's four rooms and using ice cubes the size of Tiniping's torso as substitutes for stones. Seeing this, Romi asks if they know how to curl, but the Tinipings don't know about the sport called curling, and they only say that what they do is a sophisticated summer sport for the Princess Tinipings, without mentioning the title. What is unique about this method is that it sweeps even though it is a method of rolling ice on bare ground.[41] At this time, Pony Ping parodied Areum Ping's call to Kim Young-mi by shouting "Arum Areum!" And then, in order to catch Nooping, Romi pushes Hatuping and Ponyping, who play the role of stones, on the ice, and Areumping and Sapoonping sweep and attempt an attack toward Nooping.
  • KBS Drama Special Out of reach - It tells the story of a promising national curling team player who, when he is reduced to a candidate, returns to his hometown of Uiseong and becomes a mixed-double partner with the player he once had a crush on. Producer Hwang Seung-gi, who was in charge of directing, is from Uiseong, and one of the staff members was from Uiseong, so we talked together and suggested making a drama set in Uiseong. Coincidentally, curling and Uiseong were attracting attention at the PyeongChang Olympics, so they decided to use curling as the subject. Coincidentally, the day before the drama was aired, the actual Uiseong curling players held a press conference regarding the tyranny of the coaching staff .

  • Because it looks like a board game played on ice, it is not recognized as a sport even though it is an Olympic sport, but in reality, it is an 'exercise' that requires a lot of physical strength. Since it is a sport played on ice, the stadium is cold, and the game lasts 2 to 3 hours. The distance traveled when sweeping is considerable, and since you do it for more than two hours, it is very difficult if you do not have upper body strength. For this reason, there are many cases where beginners look down on it, start it, then wave their hands and leave.[42]
  • It is one of the sports with surprisingly many injuries. Wrists, shoulders, knees, waist, and pelvis are the main areas of injury. According to injury statistics from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, curling had the highest number of injuries . However, the degree of injury is minor compared to other sports where injuries can be life-threatening due to inflammation or stress .
  • Compared to other sports, the life of an athlete is long. In foreign countries, there are players who are still active even after they are over 50, and there is also the World Senior Curling Championships where only players over 50 can participate.[43] Kim Gyeong-seok, an international curling referee who was Team Kim 's teacher during his high school days , said in an interview when he was the coach of the curling team at Uiseong Girls' High School that a curler's prime is around age 40.
The statement above that it is a sport that consumes a lot of physical strength and that the player's life is long may seem contradictory to each other, because the level of physical strength consumption is clearly different depending on the player's position. In the case of lead or second, who are mainly in charge of sweeping, it consumes a lot of physical strength, but in the case of skip, when it is really urgent and an additional sweeper is needed or when one participates in sweeping for a short time, most of the time is spent planning strategies, making judgments, and sending elaborate shots, so even if the player's strength decreases due to age, he can play without much trouble. In other words, most of the veteran players who are still active are skips.
  • It is a typical family sport . Because teamwork is prioritized, most national teams do not select good players separately, but select the team that placed first in the national team selection match as the national team, so it is easy to see siblings in the same team among national team players in any country. can In many cases, not only the spouse but also the entire family is a curling player. For example, in the case of the UK, it is common to be a player from generation to generation.
In Korea, the Gyeongbuk Sports Council men's, women's, and mixed double teams that participated in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics are intertwined as brothers, sisters, and sisters. Kim Young-mi and Kim Gyeong-ae of the women's team are sisters, while Lee Ki-bok of the men's team and Lee Ki- jeong of the mixed doubles team are twin brothers. In addition, the older sister of the men's team player Kim Min-chan is the women's national team coach Kim Min-jung, and coach Kim Min-jung's husband is the mix double team coach Jang Ban-seok. In particular, the women's national team is made up of Kim as the coach and all of the players, so foreign media even asked whether the sisters were part of the team.
Because they are organized on a team basis, the same team often shares common academic ties and local ties. On the women's team, Kim Eun-jung is a friend of Kim Young-mi, Kim Sun-young is a friend of Kim Kyung-ae, and all the players are from the same Uiseong Girls' High School. At this level, it is practically a family team. His friend even has the same name as Kim Eun-jung's mother. # The reason why the Korean women's national team at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics all spoke in the Gyeongbuk dialect is because the team is from there and they are from a nearby neighborhood. The exception is Kim Cho-hee , a Phipps (a type of reserve player) who graduated from Songhyeon High School in Uijeongbu. Here, there are several episodes that occur while curling that are pleasant and have family-like content.
It's not like this only in Korea. The Japanese team that participated in the PyeongChang Olympics has Yoshida Chinami and Yoshida Yurika as sisters, and the US team has Matt Hamilton and Becca Hamilton as siblings. In the case of mixed doubles, there are quite a lot of cases where couples and lovers do it.
  • Unlike Korea, where professional players are part of corporate teams, overseas, there are players who have other jobs besides curling, so it is often misunderstood that players who enjoy sports as a hobby are playing for the national team, but in reality, there are many cases where they only play curling during the curling season with permission from their employers. Top teams in the World Team Rankings (World Curling Tour Rankings) or national teams from each country consistently participate in tour competitions for as little as 4 to as long as 7 months and appear at international competitions while maintaining their rankings and game sense, but it is virtually impossible to hold a concurrent job while the curling season is in progress. However, since curling is still a minor sport, the prize money for tour competitions is small compared to tour competitions for other sports, so people have to get a separate job to earn money during the off-season. In Canada, where curling is active, top ranked teams attract sponsors for each team and receive separate financial support.
In addition, many countries that perform well in international competitions, such as the Olympics and the World Championship, often operate and support the national teams and their teams like unemployment teams in Korea. However, the exception is Denmark, but the Olympics are steadily competing, but Denmark's curling athletes have to cover the Olympic team even if they are the Olympic team.[44] Crossing the sea, Sweden is an environment where you can support the national team athletes at the federation level and concentrate on exercise without worrying about money.[45] Danish curling players compare Sweden and their own curling.

17. transform curling

17.1. floor curling

It is an abbreviated form of curling designed to be enjoyed on the floor, not on ice, for the popularization of curling. It is similar to wheelchair curling in that it uses the same rules as curling, except there is no sweeping. At the base of the stone, there are bearings that move in all directions, so it behaves similar to curling on an ice sheet.

17.2. Caroling

It is a sport inspired by curling and started in Japan in 1993. Both teams take turns pitching the Jet Roller into the point zone , and at the end of the inning, the team that places the Jet Roller closer to the center of the point zone scores a point. All of the winning team's Jet Rollers that enter the point zone are reflected in the score. Jet Rollers that enter the red area (center) of the point zone are counted as 3 points, Jet Rollers that enter the yellow area are counted as 2 points, and Jet Rollers that enter the blue area (edge) are counted as 1 point. The losing team does not score any points even if the Jet Roller is in the point zone. Jet rollers have wheels that allow them to glide even on surfaces other than ice, so their behavior is slightly different from curling stones that slide in all directions. In Japan , as one of the nationally active recreational sports, there are recognized regulations and national competitions are held.

[1] The ice balls that use the granite 'stone' instead of the ball are correct. Of course, you can never throw or kick it. Ice hockey, which uses the plastic discs, is also classified as a ball and is also called 'ice ball'.[2] Originally, the name 'Korea Curling Federation' was used, but after March 2021, 'game' was removed.[3] In the case of world federations, the WCF oversees both non-disabled curling and wheelchair curling, but in Korea, for institutional reasons, all disabled sports form separate federations, so the curling federation/association is also separate.[4] One shoe is equipped with a plastic (usually Teflon) material plate on the sole to make it easy to slip, and the other shoe is worn with a competition shoe with a sole made of a non-slip material. For this reason, in scenes of curling players playing, it is easy to see them sliding across the ice with one foot slightly raised.[5] There is a dedicated stadium, but there are also existing swimming pools that are modified and used.[6] Goalball and Lawn Bowl, which were held as demonstration events, did not become official events in the end. In the case of Lone Ball, it is only not able to go to the Olympics, but it is still a popular event on the international stage, such as becoming an official event in the Commonwealth Games .[7] Of course, eight points are actually almost zero. The eight points are all in the house, and the opponent's first stone can be daughters when the first stone is outside the outermost stone of our team . To be able to actually be possible, the opposing team throws the stone almost, and + 2. The team puts the stone into the house perfectly, and at the same time, the opponent 's stone should not touch our team's stone. It's hard to imagine. In the meantime, the commentators said that they scored 6 points in mix curling, which is slightly more likely than this in the US VS Swiss, and said that it is lower than the golf hole -in -one probability . But in fact, I came to the 2016 Asia -Pacific Curling Championship . 2016. 11. 9. As you can see from the name of the link team, it is the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Women's Curling Team . For reference, Qatar, who was the first international competition, scored more than 10 points to most teams.File:Korea vs Qa...[8] If multiple scores are needed and it is determined to be difficult in this end, all stones from both our team and the opposing team are sent out of the house to induce no scores.[9] Exceeding the time limit does not result in a forfeit. However, you will no longer be able to throw stones. Therefore, in effect, it is like a forfeit and is rarely seen in professional games.[10] For reference, the time limit of curling was 73 minutes per team. At this time, however, after the pitching, the time limit was deducted until the stone stopped . Currently, the Timer stops from the moment when the helmet removes it from the stone when he pitches. Therefore, the current rule is considered to be valid if you just throw the last stone of the last end within the time limit.[11] The remaining time until the 10th end disappears and is unconditionally reset to 4 minutes and 30 seconds.[12] It is made by spraying fine water droplets on the playing field and freezing them on the surface. They wear out as the game progresses, so make a new one before each game. Since it has to be finely and evenly sprinkled, a separate expert scatters it with a dedicated machine, and it is also the reason why it does not immediately become a curling arena just by drawing a target on one side of the ice rink. Because brushing is virtually meaningless. The exception is wheelchair curling without brushing.[13] The back team's stone is also an operational operation that is anomalously guarded because it is applied to the nitique shot rules.[14] Usually, these stones are marked with a mark on the handle to distinguish them from the stones that players throw at.[15] However, by the fifth pitch for each end, the stones in the free guard zone cannot be removed. It can be removed from the sixth helmet (the third stone team).[16] It is common to take a back hole.[17] Bowling here refers to lawn bowling, not ten-pin bowling. Just consider that the meaning of ‘football’ varies from country to country.[18] There are people who spread misunderstandings by spreading this explanation here and there, but it is said that liking is prohibited, not at the level of silent execution, and everyone in the same team lightly encourages and likes each other.[19] However, it is good manners for the player to take off his gloves and ask for a handshake. In the mixed double Korea vs. Sweden match at the 2026 Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics, when Korea was dragged by 7 points until the 6th end, the referee declared the game over, leading to controversy over misjudgment. Although the possibility was slim, if Korea had won 6 points in the 7th end, they could have attempted a comeback in the 8th end.[20] As we commonly know, defeating the king (especially during checkmate) is a classic method even in the era of the Queen's Gambit , so in modern chess, if possible, the clock is stopped and a handshake is offered.[21] A typical example is when the distance between the button and the stone is very vague and it is impossible to know whether the stone in question scores a point or not. Or, if they are so close that they cannot be measured with the eyes, the referee will measure them with a special measuring device and make a decision.[22] Before the game, each team takes turns warming up, and at the end of the game, different players each take a draw shot clockwise and counterclockwise. This distance is measured, and the team with the smaller sum catches the second ball in the first end. In addition, in the case of league matches, these records are continuously accumulated, and if a tie occurs at the end and it is difficult to determine the ranking, as a last resort, the team with the lower sum of LSD is selected as the top team. Therefore, the rules stipulate that only the same player must throw LSD in each match, and that all players must throw it at least several times. Since this can be used to determine the ranking of tied teams after the full league, the distance must be measured accurately every time, so a referee comes in and measures it. It's not broadcast before the game, so it's not noticeable. (Furthermore, this is not done during the preliminaries, semifinals, or finals. This is because the team with better preliminary results gets the hammer in the first end.)[23] It doesn't matter anyway. The operation time is measured from the moment the coach comes down and meets the players, and there is no need to rush since it can be done within the travel time set by the competition supervisor in advance according to the stadium conditions. Rather, it may be more advantageous to use enough travel time, so it is better to go slowly.[24] As a side note, even if an individual buys a stone and uses it, there are more problems than the weight. The point is that the stone must perfectly match the temperature of the ice in the house. This is because the minute heat from the stone can melt the floor and create curves on the surface of the house. So, when new stones are purchased at the stadium, they are placed in a corner of the house for more than a week to adjust the temperature. Therefore, it is difficult for individuals to use stones, and knowing this, it has become a kind of culture to match the stones themselves in the stadium.[25] Mining is possible only once every 10 years.[26] There are similar types of mop among household cleaning products.[27] It is removed even if it is over. However, it is not removed if it is hit by another stone.[28] However, this is an explanation written to make it easier to understand in the general case where the skip throws the last pitch. To be precise, when both teams throw the last pitch, the person in charge of the house calculates the score. In other words, if the skip is not a force, the skip takes on the role of calculating scores and reaching an agreement.[29] There are some competitions where the men's and women's divisions are together, while others do not, so there is a difference in the number of competitions between the men and women.[30] The Uiseong International Curling Competition was also held in August 2016, but the 2016 competition was different from the general tour competition in which men and women teams competed separately because there were mixed teams and men and women teams competed against each other.[31] It may have been due to the revelations made by the Gyeongbuk Sports Council players around that time , but considering that Kim Gyeong-doo , who was in charge of running the Gyeongbuk Sports Council curling team and the Gyeongbuk Curling Association, refrained from the activities of the Gyeongbuk Sports Council curling team during the 2018-2019 season, it can be said that there was already no intention to hold the competition.[32] It is also called a winner-win-win .[33] In the preliminaries, before the start of the first end, the distance from the house to the stone is compared with a draw shot to determine the first and second ball. Among the results (a total of 18 shots for 10 countries, as interns and outturns are thrown once), the two with the longest distances are excluded and the remainder is averaged.[34] In fact, in the men's and mixed doubles, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th places were tied, but because of this rule, the United States (w2), who placed 3rd in the men's division, advanced directly to the semifinals, and the United Kingdom (w1) and Switzerland with the last card to advance to the semifinals (w0) had a tie-break, and Switzerland, who had been pushed back in the winners match, defeated England and advanced to the semifinals. Moreover, in the mixed doubles, the OAR player who rose to third place in the same way and became the final third place was disqualified due to doping, so this tie-break in the end became a de facto medal match.[35] The few people who knew about it were those who watched the Winter Olympics and thought that such a sport existed, but very few people really knew the rules of the game.[36] 2009 World Women's Championship[37] Scotland competes in international competitions other than the Olympics.[38] Ishizaki Kotomi, who was a candidate, originally belonged to the Kawanishi Construction Curling Club and was on a different team, but was together only for the Salt Lake City Olympics.[39] He won two silver medals (1998, 1999) at the World Junior Championships, which was Japan's first world championship medal in curling. The team name was taken from the animation The Simpsons , and in middle school, when writing the team name in English, it was written incorrectly as 'Simsons' instead of 'Simpsons', but it has been used ever since. At the time of the Salt Lake City Olympics, it attracted attention outside of the game, but the team was disbanded after the Olympics due to poor performance.[40] The actual model is Yumi Hayashi, who was a third member of The Simpsons, and followed Onodera to Team Aomori and Hokkaido Portius.[41] Pony Ping pushes the ice, and Sapun Ping and Areum Ping sweep hard with their nostrils wide open, threatening to tear their noses.[42] In the case of Team Kim, the entire team basically has enough stamina to have a lifeguard license.[43] Usually, players are divided into two categories based on their age, junior and senior, but curling cannot do that because there is a separate age standard for seniors.[44] Representatively, at the time of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Skip Madeleine Dupont of the Danish women's national team disbanded the team because she could not participate in the tour after the PyeongChang Olympics due to financial problems.[45] If you look at the profile of the Swedish men's and women's national team players, such as Niklas Edin and Anna Hasselborg, most of them list the occupation as an athlete.
