Located in present-day Thuringia , it was created in 1826 when the estate of the Wettin family Ernst line was reorganized, and Ernst III of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld became Ernst I. The Saxe-Coburg and Gotha dynasty, which was the ruling family of this duchy, prospered as it entered into marriage with various countries or was inaugurated as a king.
At first, it was in the form of a joint union between the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha , but it was administratively unified in 1852, and later joined the German Empire through the North German Confederation .
In 1918, Prince Karl Eduard abdicated, and the Gotha region became the Gotha Free State, and the Coburg region became the Coburg Free State. However, as a result of the referendum held on November 30, 1919, the Gotha Free State was incorporated into Thuringia on May 1, 1920, and the Coburg Free State was incorporated into Bavaria on July 1, and ceased to exist.

He reigned as Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha for a whopping 49 years, and although he married Princess Alexandrine of Baden, he had no children.[1] Therefore, Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh , nephew of Ernst II and second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, beat out his older brother , Edward, Prince of Wales.[2] ascended to the throne
