Although it is impossible to protect against a direct hit from a rifle bullet, it is a level that can greatly increase survivability when engaged in close combat with German soldiers holding MP40s.

According to the recollections of Otto Carius, the Soviet-made body armor issued to snipers and officers in the Soviet Army was impervious to rifle bullets, but provided significant protection against shrapnel and pistol bullets. During World War II, the United States attempted to replace iron protective clothing with reinforced fiber, and it was partially used in the Battle of Okinawa. In actual battlefields, most casualties are not caused by bullets but by fragments created by various explosives. Accordingly, the US military paid attention to the fact that the M1952 protective clothing could effectively protect the wearer from fragments such as grenades or artillery fire, and from then on, paid great attention to the adoption and improvement of the protective clothing. However, as the name suggests, the comfort clothing did not block bullets from ordinary firearms.

Expeditionary uniforms were deployed in large quantities starting from the Vietnam War . The US Army's M69 expeditionary uniform of the time was an improved version of the M1952 with a collar attached to protect the neck.[5] The M69 had excellent shrapnel protection as intended, but it still had limitations in stopping bullets. It was completely penetrated by 7.62x39mm rifle bullets, and pistol bullets that were advertised to stop it were also unstable within the effective range. Due to excessive propaganda and insufficient education, young conscripts and some ignorant troops perceived the M69 as bulletproof clothing, not casual clothing. However, they lost trust after witnessing it being penetrated by bullets, and even refused to wear the thick and uncomfortable casual clothing due to the extremely humid and hot climate of Vietnam. It was not related to the lack of bulletproof capabilities, but there were many bad reviews that it was uncomfortable because the collar that protruded when wearing it and crawling caught the back of the bulletproof helmet. As the reviews were bad, if you look at the photos of the troops at that time, they all have the front of the casual clothing undone, and it is difficult to find a soldier who has it properly closed. The M69 does not have bulletproof performance because its original purpose was as a bulletproof uniform, but the troops of the time were not accustomed to fighting wearing such heavy items. The weight itself is similar to the body armor that comes out these days, but it looks fat and is useless as it gets pierced by bullets.[6] I was very dissatisfied with rolling around wearing something so heavy. Because the NIJ regulation is very famous, the bulletproof rating of body armor made in other countries such as Europe (EU, Russia, Germany, UK, etc.) and Asia, which are in a completely different environment from the US civilian firearms market, or military body armor, is sometimes matched to the NIJ rating, but for military purposes, Military bulletproof ratings presented by each country, such as the STANAG bulletproof standards used by the U.S. military or the GOST-R bulletproof standards used by the Russian military, are more desirable than the civilian NIJ rating regulations that focus on handgun bullets.
