1. outline

A work that develops text while expressing a picture using ASCII art . The 'Learning with Yaruo' series is presumed to be the starting point.

2. characteristic

The name of the document called AA work is a temporary name.[1] There is no proper classification name in Korea yet. In Japan, the names 'Yaruo thread' and 'AA thread' have settled down.

In Japan, they are mainly serialized on 5ch , Shitabara bulletin boards, Yaruo Shelter, etc., and popular works are often transferred to the Sre Matome blog and preserved. There is even a Yaruo blog that only organizes these. In Korea, Japanese works are mainly translated on Type Moon Net , and domestic works were mainly serialized on Sredic in the past , and are currently mainly serialized on Tuna Internet Fishing Ground .

ASCII art, which is a picture realized by an optical illusion made by combining texts, is characterized by the fun that you can feel as if you are viewing a comic or visual novel . Since it is composed only of text, it is classified as a novel, but some sites classify it as a comic and stipulate that AA works be serialized on comics bulletin boards instead of novel bulletin boards. In reality, AA works often develop the content with 'ASCII art + dialogue' or 'direction using only ASCII art'. The former corresponds to 'drawing + speech bubbles' and the latter corresponds to 'comics without dialogue', so AA works are definitely closer to comics than novels. The fact that both Goblin Slayer and Srebal Ranobe 4 were comicized at the same time when they were published is also due to this characteristic.

On the other hand, it is close to a visual novel in that it repeatedly uses only designated stock images (AA). In comics (except for factory production), it is taboo for artists to draw and stamp each cut anew, but in AA, AA creators, so-called 'artisans', do create and provide new cuts, but this happens very slowly and rarely, and they almost always repeatedly use characters and cuts that have been released to the public.

However, in that respect, AA’s unique charm also emerges. Like the star system , the character pool expands every time a new AA is created by using characters that have already been created, and it is also fun like Super Robot Wars in that it allows characters from various works to crossover because it can borrow character traits defined in the original and secondary creations . However, character modifications must be accepted. This is because, as AA dramas have become their own genre and many works have accumulated, they have developed unique networks and characters that are only applicable to AA dramas. In fact, it is more similar to Nico Nico Douga's Mugen Story genre than Shuro University in that it is a secondary creation that often discards the original settings of various works' characters and brings only character traits or neta to crossover .

AA used in the Japanese language is generally created based on MS PGothic 9pt, which is the default setting of MS Windows + Internet Explorer under Shift_JIS , so caution is required when posting a Korean translation. Because it looks like everything is broken. For this reason, web fonts are often used to prevent them from being broken in other environments (mobile or Mac, etc.).[2]

3. frequently used works

3.1. character

The proportion of Yaruo , an original 2ch character, and derived characters is high enough to be called 'Yaruo thread'. In most cases, it is the main character's role.

Since Rozen Maiden , Lucky Star , and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya are subculture hits in the 2000s from the original work, since 2ch was just famous, AA has been produced far more than other works and has been used that much, so these three are collectively called It was called Yaruo Sre's Three Great Works (御三家). However, after a long time has passed since the 2000s and the AA database has been enriched overall, the frequency of use has become obsolete, with no difference or less than other works below.
In addition, the works that produced a lot of AA are as follows.

In addition to the works mentioned above, there are characters such as Takakazu Abe and Mary Cleric Christie, whose work itself is minor, but whose unique appearance or character has created an unusually high number of AAs. Alternatively, there are cases where AA is not very common but is used frequently. For example, characters in Nobuyuki Fukumoto 's works have only a small number of AAs, but thanks to their unique versatility, they often appear as extras in many works. In addition, there are cases where new minor AAs are produced in large quantities due to the taste of thread owners. And depending on the author, real people or politicians may appear for satirical purposes. However, due to the net right-wing tendency prevalent in 5ch, Shinzo Abe , Liberal Democratic Party politicians (especially the Abe faction), and right-wing figures are portrayed positively, while there are a few cases where democratic/social politicians, progressive social activists, and real people related to South Korea, China, and North Korea that 5ch dislikes appear for the purpose of disparagement . And a writer under the pen name ☆Lin is an example of being affected by this 5ch far-right influence.

3.2. Material

In the case of popular AA works, other thread owners imitate them and run threads with almost similar rules, and as the number of similar works increases, there are cases where they become established as a kind of standardized rule.

3.2.1. Fate series , Holy Grail War series

A popular series that has established itself as its own genre for a relatively long time and is still serialized in more than three or four volumes. You become a Master or Servant and play the Holy Grail War through anchors and choices. Most people choose the Master as the main character. There were a few series with Servant protagonists, but most of them were not favored because they were tiring because they had to go all-in on communicating with the Master, so they were proportionally close to a very small minority. Because it’s hard to please the master

Easy-to-understand and generalized rules such as 'Compare 3 out of 6 stats during battle' and 'The Spirit Spell can be used to improve stats or compare win rates, and can be withdrawn with 2 strokes', so it is easy to access . . To these universal rules, each thread adds its own arrangement to enhance originality. In addition to Fate/Stay night, there are also threads based on Fate/Extra with the theme of a month's Holy Grail War, and in this case, the rules are relatively diverse.

Another famous rule is the comma war rule, which is used more often in non-AA threads than in AA works. As a famous domestic thread that uses comma wars, ours serialized in Threaddik is also Let's try is an example. It is a work that has been serialized for as many as 77 threads, and it is a work that started and ended the anchor bulletin board in Threaddik, and it is not a legendary work that was the biggest hit among non-AA threads, but a legendary work .

During this series of Holy Grail War threads, large-scale planning series ( Fate/Parllel Lines , Fate/Cross Horizons, etc.) in which several Holy Grail War threads independently develop their stories with a single world view are sometimes held, and two threads are united. So, the case of making a series of threads is so frequent that it is hard to count. Also, rather than making all the character sheets for Master and Servant by myself, there are many cases where I ask other thread owners to rewrite them.

Famous writers include Aiwas and Baron , and there are also sreju who specialize in the Holy Grail War, such as レイカー ◆ldWJRU2.V2 (Raker) and King of Tomb ◆jtHtMr3tGQ (はかあなおう - ) (Tomb King). In addition, well-known artists such as Bomb Rock and KUMO all have experience in writing at least once or twice.

3.2.2. Pokemon series

A secondary creative series based on Pokémon . Although it uses the Pokémon system, Pokémon often uses characters from other works rather than the original work. In addition , there are many cases where elements that are not present in the original work, such as Pokemon heroines and evolution, are introduced. Anchors are usually used not only for dialogue and actions, but also for instructions given during Pokémon battles. As the original work is so famous, its history is also long.
Most of the works introduced in Korea are mostly the Pokemon Master series and its derivative works serialized by Ilshin Yoo from the end of 2010. Introduction is not good.

It is relatively easy to produce long-term serials because, due to the nature of the genre, the number of characters that appear is bound to be very large.
Collect at least 6 Pokemon (characters) including Ace[3] , it is a series that is bound to go on for a long time if done properly because the basics are to include individual backgrounds and stories for each character, and to unfold multiple matches and leagues to advance to the goal. If you combine the main character party, which consists of the main character + 6 groups (+a), at least one rival party, usually 2 to 3, and people in related industries, you will need 30 to 40 characters and their settings, even just for the characters in a close relationship with the main character. Even compared to the Fate series introduced above, the characters needed for the Holy Grail War are 7 groups of Masters and Servants, 14+@, so the Pokemon series requires two to three times as many characters.
In addition, the amount of data that needs to be compiled, such as the species level of the Pokémon to fight, the potential, and the trainer's abilities, is enormous. Because of this, it is also a series that has a lot of cases that can not afford it and end the year. The sign of the year is usually a tournament, and when the story material runs out, the tournament becomes difficult, and it becomes a year-round.

3.3. scavenger series

Yaruo is like a scavenger, a thread series whose prototype is.
The basic setting is a post-apocalypse, "a world that has developed paranormally enough to have automata appear, and then has been moderately ruined and ruined." Some elements were imported from the second creation of the Metal Max series called "Made Max" serialized by the same thread . AA post-apocalypse scavenger literature led to the popular trend, and many secondary (third?) creations borrowed from the same worldview were also created.

Another series that shares the same worldview is the 'Scavenger Maker Series' series, which is modeled after the Princess Maker series. The goal is to literally raise a scavenger based on the Scavenger series. Of course, like Pme, they can grow in a different direction from the original purpose. These characters are 'released', allowing other secondary creation thread owners to freely use them, and are sometimes used as NPCs by other thread owners. Since this method was quite popular, it was serialized by several thread owners, including the original thread owner.

4. classification

4.1. B.C.

I was hired to put flowers on top of sashimi!!!!! (July 13-14, 2007), so stories with Yaruo before that date are considered 'BC'. That 'profession of putting flowers on sashimi' is an internet urban legend that does not exist .

4.2. learning system

It looks like Yaruo is becoming a novelist.[4] The ‘Learning Series’ starting with . In a way, it is the origin of the Yaruo series. (December 16-7, 2007)

4.2.1. history

It is a thing that deals with 'history' among the learning AA water, but due to its overwhelming popularity, it has become almost a genre.

Classification is divided into three major categories
  • Lecture type - Stories constructed in such a way that the student role 'learns' from the lecturer role. In fact, it feels like a 'history-themed learning system' rather than a history class.
  • Time slip type - Stories composed in such a way that Yaruo, who moved to a specific era, experiences life in that era.
  • Character replacement type - A form of taking Yaruo as a specific person in history and tracing the person's life. Current mainstream of history.

there is

4.2.2. profession

Works based on specific occupations in the learning world. It deals with the basic introduction of the job, the history, current situation, specific work, and the general atmosphere such as industry terminology and culture. Due to the nature, there are many cases where the thread owner is a current business or a former official.

4.3. secondary creative world

Second creation of specific novels and games. In some cases, it is a secondary creation, or only the settings are taken, but there are not many contents that follow the original story. In fact, in AA works, most other works other than Yaruo are used and used, so if you look at it, you can see all the works as the secondary creative system.

4.4. original system

Works that tell stories with original stories. There are also many types of love stories using major characters implemented in AA.

4.5. anchor / cheap

In the original world, there are no restrictions on 'original work', so the writer can literally tell the story as he or she wants. Coincidentally, the place where such works are written is the thread bulletin board, where writers and readers communicate in real time. Therefore, there are cases where the story progresses in a way that 'changes the story development according to the reader's actions', and this type of work is called an anchor. A term that comes from anchoring a float-threaded bulletin board. There are many ways in which the thread presents the situation and conditions and follows the decision of the number of threads below, or the decision is made by reading the numbers in commas with the eyes of the dice. To add a twist, there are cases where the writer throws random dice and calculates them with the anchor's dice value to determine the final anchor. In this case, the feature is that sniping becomes useless due to the random dice.

What is needed to run an anchor thread is a steady serial cycle and the writer's ability to handle a story that could easily end up in Andromeda due to numerous sniping, terrorism, the madness of gangsters, and rampaging Dice Gods. It is quite common to have to completely change the plot because of a single anchor or dice. The main problem is when eyes of 0, commonly called 'Cree', appear. Whether the eye is an additional choice die or a single fixed choice, the scale becomes larger than the existing choice, and the key here is to set an appropriate range. Appropriate expansion of the development is a great seasoning that makes the work unique and interesting, but if the development is twisted too much, the development may become so serious that the work itself collapses internally. In addition, the percentage of crits from 0 to 9 is 10%, but due to the nature of constantly rolling dice, the frequency of appearances is not that low. Unless you weaken Cree's influence from the beginning, you must always take into account the situation in which the planned plot will be discarded and a new plot must be created.
In an anchor thread, the writer's agility, improvisation, and storytelling skills are all required, but mutual communication through difficulty adjustment between threadju and threadmin is also important. This is similar to TRPG mastering. If there is a problem in this process and the relationship between Threadju and Sremin is creaked, the serialization will be stopped in the middle, or even if it is completed somehow, it will end in an unpleasant ending. Sometimes a declaration is made. The reason for the declaration of abandonment of the bomb rock was also due to the discord with Sremin.

The importance of anchors varies depending on the work. Depending on the story, in some stories, only important decisions such as event occurrence or branch selection are designated as anchors, while in other stories, each battle decision is designated as an anchor or is made randomly.

There are anchors in the secondary creative works series, but in these cases, the story and characterization tend to deviate greatly from the original work. Sometimes, it often ends up being an almost original work, with only the background setting similar to the original work.

Due to its nature, there are many threads that frequently use anchors, such as Pokemon, Goddess Rebirth, Holy Grail War, and strategy or business simulation. On the other hand, there are cases that do not use anchors at all, such as story-oriented threads. In this case, since there is no participation from Sremin, Sreju's storytelling ability becomes important.

Even in non-anchor threads, choices that are difficult to roll with dice, such as character AA decisions, often receive anchors. In fact, it is rare to find threads that do not use anchors at all.

4.6. Encore/Dice

‘Enko’ does not receive anchors from Threamen.[5] This refers to a thread that uses only one die that the thread owner rolls directly. In Korea, it is also called ‘dice water’.

Sometimes, instead of a threadju, a threadmin rolls, but even in this case, it is the same in that it only plays with dice.
Each has its own pros and cons. In the case of a thread that is rolled directly, the posting time can be saved, but the participation of the thread people is almost eliminated.

It is also a method that is mainly used in gags and bottled water because encore works are easy to produce extraordinary results that cannot be predicted by their nature.

5. Domestic AA

In Korea, many AA works are currently being translated on Typemoonnet, and many of them have been completed. Not only that, thanks to its popularity, AA creative activities are also being actively carried out, but fewer than bulletin boards dealing with AA works, including the Japanese Shitaraba rental bulletin board group.

Anchor-type AA works are quite active, but compared to Japan, where they have become popular to some extent and dozens of people participate in each thread, an environment in which they are inevitably inferior in many aspects is created. While it is okay for a newly established thread to acquire the 5th rank below, in Korea, it is difficult to proceed unless you are the 1st rank below. Still, as of May 2016, the tuna bulletin board anchor version, which is the most active AA in Korea, has about 100 to 120 users during peak hours, and is showing progress compared to the early days of the Threadic anchor version, which had about 20 users at most.

Lack of awareness is the biggest problem. Unlike Japan, where anyone with interest can participate on a huge bulletin board community site called Shitaraba, and where you can view and participate in a neat collection of existing works on the Matome site, in Korea, the most active site where AA is translated is Type Moonnet, which is highly closed, and the Threaddic and Tuna bulletin boards, which have active AA work activities in the site structure most suitable for existing AA, are similarly inaccessible.

In addition, it is unfortunate that no matter what form of creation, it is difficult to create a dramatic situation due to the small number of participants, the lack of motivation of the writer due to the small number of people watching, the difficulty in creating AA or drawings that are supported on the spot according to the progress of the thread, and the fact that there are no star AA artists in Korea due to its short history. This is even more so considering that the reason AA works that are currently good to suddenly stop submitting is mostly due to a decrease in motivation due to lack of interest.

Also, due to the fact that it is difficult to serialize anchors due to the small number of slemin participating in anchors, domestic AA has been developing anchors (dice waters) that do not require anchors from sleighmins since the days when Threaddik collapsed and tuna Internet fishing grounds began to prosper. ) or encore-like works became the mainstream phenomenon.

And there is a sense that the Thremin's actions are still immature. In particular, problems arise with the last thread. In thread works, including AA works, there is a custom that when the thread is full and it is time to set up a new thread, the last thread is used as an anchor to commemorate the creation of a new thread, and the thread owner holds the anchor. However, it is quite common for this last thread to be installed too indiscriminately, causing trouble with the thread owner or other thread members. Instead of congratulating the opening of a new thread, the atmosphere has become so hostile that everyone is fighting with each other, asking why such an anchor was added. In the worst case, the last thread is given as a bonus to the threadmin, so even though it is entirely up to the threadlord to decide whether or not to make it happen, no matter what content is written, it is natural for the threadju to listen to the last thread, and even the threadmin acts arrogantly as if he has the right. There is. Of course, problems related to snipers, trollers, and the last res are the same problems that occur in Japan, but even taking that into account, problems caused by the last res are particularly frequent in Korea. There are threads who started the series with the goal of having multiple threads having fun together, but when they see the threads fighting like this all the time, they feel skeptical and retire. There are also threads that don't retire, but take a break because their mentality is broken.

Of course, this is largely due to the lack of accumulated history compared to Japan. In Japan, serialization of AA works using characters such as Mona , Shobong, and Yaruo on 5ch was established to some extent, and after anchors appeared, there were quite a few complaints about the small edition in the early days. Of course, even this was several times larger than the present Korea, but it is true that it took more than a few years to raise it to the level that AA currently has.

Additionally, the structure that the writer and reader create together while using dice or anchors is essentially closer to that of a TRPG or board game rather than the feeling of reader participation in a webtoon or novel. In fact, many famous Japanese AA writers have considerable TRPG experience, especially mastering experience, and are currently conducting sessions. This kind of quickness and responsiveness is not created overnight. This is the same problem for participants. Compared to Japan, where people often have TRPG or board game experience that lasts for weeks or months with people sitting across from them offline, board games and TRPGs in Korea are only gaining ground in the 2010s, and readers may also attribute this to their lack of experience as participants. This can only be resolved with time and experience.

Currently, the problems listed above are gradually improving, and if the collection and editing of AA works becomes more active, the domestic AA community may grow further. However, at present, the scale is still small, and the accessibility of mainstream sites is poor compared to 5ch or Sitarava, which is something to consider.

As of June 2016, for some reason, all threads published before January 15, 2016 were deleted from Threaddic. A few months later, the threads were restored, but the Threaddic site itself was very unstable, so you never know when the threads might explode again, so as a precaution, if you had a thread you liked, you had to use the archive to preserve it. As of 2017, Threaddick closed, so the works that were not archived will never be seen again. For archived works, add an archive link to the description of each work.

5.1.1. Type Moon Net

AA bulletin board[6]

The site with the most active AA translation in Korea. Completed AAs are moved to the Completed AA bulletin board. The 19 gold works are on the 19 gold AA bulletin board and the finished 19 gold AA bulletin board.

Not translated works, but domestic artists' works are serialized in the Creative AA bulletin board and 19 -karat gold AA bulletin board. However, any bulletin board requires login. In fact, the only site where you can see the translation of foreign AA works (the only Japanese) in Korea. However, in the case of the translation, some of the frustrating readers often feel skeptical, causing a large amount of translation works to be deleted. If you have a favorite work, it is recommended to back up personally.[7]

Basically, the CSS that matches the display of AA in the Japanese language is set by default, and the feature is that it displays AA normally without breaking it through web fonts even in environments where AA cannot be displayed properly due to a lack of fonts, such as mobile environments or non-Windows environments. Please note that this webfont is not self-hosted.[8]

Advantages: It has the largest number of translated AA works from overseas (Japan) and is in fact the only AA translation site in Korea. Serialization of works aged 19+ is possible. One of the few sites in Korea that allows 19+ AA.
Disadvantages: Some AAs are often broken due to site problems, and the unique advantages of the floating system cannot be used, so it is not very popular as an AA serial site.

5.1.2. Thredick

anchor plate[9]

A site where various anchor AA threads were in progress in real time .

Login is not required and it has its own solution to the biggest drawback of domestic sites, which is broken AA. However, many problems occurred, such as server instability and the neglect of trollers due to the absence of the operator, and at the end of February 2016, a group of sremins migrated to the tuna internet fishing ground and the fishing ground collapsed. Then, in 2016, in Threaders , which was opened as a beta , only the name of the version was uploaded, and it was not even opened properly, but was only tested, and the site crashed in December 2017. In the new Threaddic , established at the end of 2017, an AA version existed in the beginning, but the problem of broken ASCII art still existed. It was useless in a situation where an alternative, an unbreakable tuna fishing farm, existed, so it was deleted and completely forgotten. There is no interest in ASCII art at all, and the anchor version does not show that much artistic power, so it has become a site of virtually no relevance. Of course, there are still people who vaguely know what AA is, so it would be possible to revive it, but there is no benefit of a site called Threadick...[10]

There is a slang that is only used inside the site. Terms necessary for appreciating AA works include 'boat' for 'threa', 'captain' for 'threju', 'crew' for 'thremin', and 'let's row' for 'acceleration'.

5.1.3. tuna internet fishery

old anchor plate new anchor plate

A place where Threadick's anchor version Thremin moved because of Threaddick's problems. The site administrator continues to provide updates for migrating thread owners and thread miners. It is becoming easier to use... but as the number of participants increased and the F5 hit rate increased , the server crashed regularly. Currently, the server is handling it just fine.

There is slang that is only used inside the site. Terms required to appreciate AA works include 'sre' for 'fishing ground', 'sreju' for 'fishing ground', 'sremin' for 'tuna', and 'violation of deliberation' for 'shark gills'. One thing to note is that these slangs are only used within the tuna internet fishing grounds, so they are not used on other sites.

There is a list of works published in more than 5 threads . Only works that have been serialized for more than 5 threads are written, so works with less than 4 threads are not written.[11] Works that have been completed throughout the year are marked as 'Serialization Suspended', and works that have been completed are marked as 'Serialization Ended'.

Advantages: All existing floating systems can be utilized.
Disadvantage: As a side effect of anonymity, it is vulnerable to trollers. There are also famous trollers who have been active for many years. Because it is not a membership site, works under the age of 19 cannot be posted.

7. list of writers

If you don't have a clear nickname (in 5ch terms, it's called Kotehan), it's not easy to write a document. This is because 5ch is basically an anonymous site. Of course, writers who are regularly active take advantage of the fact that a string (trip) is created when something is entered into the name box, and make themselves known by putting a trip in the name box and attaching or modifying a random number generated ID number unique to 5ch. Geth's ◆GESU1/dEaE is an example.

9. related document

[1] There is also an opinion that the document name should be changed to 'AA work' in consideration of spacing.[2] In Korea, the developer of this web font is known as a Korean, but in fact, it is a web font developed by a Japanese developer. To be precise, it was in 2012 that all Japanese created the AA display font (" Saitamaar "), which is currently used in Type Moonnet AA bulletin boards and tuna Internet fishing grounds, using the glyphs of MS PGothic . Prior to this, in 2011, a web font dedicated to AA display called Textar, CSS for application , JavaScript to apply CSS to the loaded page, and bookmarks using this JavaScript were already developed . The person who introduced this to Korea is known as the translator of 《Dekinaiko seems to be called a “devil”》 .[3] Even this is only the minimum, and if you include candidate members, there are many cases where it exceeds the 10th term.[4] And, influenced by this, ‘○○ seems to become ◇◇’ or ‘○○ seems to be ◇◇’ became the traditional title of the Yaruo series. There are many other titles, but there are especially many of these types of titles.[5] However, it is possible to receive a level of character anchor.[6] Previously, it was a lower bulletin board in the overseas fanfic category, but it was separated as the amount increased considerably. Not only the translation, but also the creation is integrated here.[7] Of course, it must be kept privately and sharing it is prohibited. And in fact, the need for AA backup is a feature shared by various AA sites in Japan and domestic AA serial sites. This is because many websites, like Threadic, often disappear at some point. The difference is that while other sites blow up the entire site, Type Moon.net allows translators and AA writers to delete posts on their own even if the site is intact, so works are often deleted.[8] I am using the one hosted on the server of the original Japanese font author.[9] Access is currently unavailable.[10] The firepower of the anchor version is less than 20 people, which was the firepower of the anchor version of the old threadik era.[11] However, even if each work does not have 5 threads, if one thread has completed a lot and the total number of threads of works completed by that thread is 5 or more, the thread will report to the list manager, so it will not be listed on the list.
