Ferrari's 2+2 model was briefly discontinued after the 412i, which was discontinued in 1989, but soon led to the 456. The design was made by Pininfarina and was inspired by the legendary model Daytona .

For some time, Ferrari's mass production cars have been angled at the corners and have been slimmed with a straight line -oriented design, but 456 was developed with a rounded design in 20 years of Ferrari mass production cars. As a result, the air resistance coefficients also recorded 0.345 CDs, which were low on the time.

As much as the drastically changed design, the design focus of the car also shows a drastically changed feature.

As for the engine, instead of the traditional Colombo engine used up to the previous 412i, the F116 engine, a next-generation 12-cylinder engine completely newly designed and developed from the ground up, was installed for the first time. In particular, the diameter of the cylinder has increased so much that the volume of the block has become somewhat larger than that of the Colombo engine, but the weight is similar. The bank angle was changed from the conventional 60 degrees to 65 degrees. Three years later, the cam lift and operating angle were set high, and the F133 engine equipped with a variable intake system was improved and mounted on the 550 Maranello . However, perhaps due to the influence of new environmental regulations, the exhaust sound is much softer and more distinctive than the existing Colombo V12 engine or flat 12 engine.
Performance is a maximum output of 442 horsepower and a maximum torque of 55.0 kg.m, and the overall evaluation of the engine was evaluated as a more GT car-like engine because the engine has improved torque in the middle rotation center, unlike the past when it was oriented toward high rotation.

For the transmission, a 6-speed manual transmission was installed for the first time in Ferrari's 12-cylinder mass-produced car, and a 4-speed automatic transmission was provided for some export markets. The mounting location is also the first among Ferrari mass-produced cars. The previous generation 412i was an ordinary FR structure car with a transmission attached right behind the engine, but the 456's transmission was developed as a transaxle structure on the rear axle far from the engine and became an FMR structure.

The body type is also designed in a full monocoque method, lowering the center of gravity and improving torsional rigidity, in the form of a semi-space frame in which only suspension towers are stacked based on the existing leather frame. However, convenience equipment has been greatly increased, and the weight has become very heavy at a whopping 1.7 tons. However, the center of gravity was lowered and an electronic damper was installed as standard to show excellent performance of lateral acceleration of 0.88g, and the handling was also quite comfortable and boasted a sharp driving feeling. The weight distribution is 51:49, which is a little different from the current front-engined Ferrari that puts more weight on the rear.

As for performance, in the case of a manual transmission, the maximum speed is 309 km / h with a zero-back time of 5.2 seconds, and the automatic transmission achieves a maximum speed of 302 km / h in 5.5 seconds, which is slightly behind this level.

The 456 is largely divided into GT and GTA, with GT being a manual transmission and GTA being an automatic transmission model.

In 1998, a facelift model, the 456M, was released. The design was slightly changed and a rear spoiler was installed. The maximum output has been increased by 6 horsepower, and the cooling system and electronic damper have been improved. Also, the engine hood was changed from aluminum to carbon.

Retractable lights were installed until the end of Ferrari history .

About 2,000 units of the 456 were produced by 2003. The successor model is the 612 Scaglietti .

There are special order models such as wagon, sedan, spider, carriolet and targa. Most of them are models ordered by the Brunei royal family, and Michael Schumacher also has a Venetian Estate. The 456 Venice sedan is a unique sedan model in Ferrari .[1]
