1. outline

French : République et canton du Jura

It is a canton in northwestern Switzerland. With a population of 73,000, it is a French-speaking region. The capital is Delémont, a small city with a population of about 10,000. The official name is Jura Republic and Canton (République et canton du Jura). To the northwest it borders France .

It is also the origin of the Jurassic period .

Catholics make up 75% and Protestants 13%.

2. history

In the middle and early modern times, it was the western part of the Bishopric of Basel and existed as a quasi-member of the former Swiss Confederation after the city of Basel converted to Protestantism during the Reformation, but it became part of the canton of Bern during the French Revolution . For this reason, the background, whether secular or religious, is historically very different from that of the Bern region, and a secession movement began to arise after World War II. Eventually, through a referendum in 1978, it separated from Bern and joined the Swiss Confederation in 1979. However, the southern region , which was French-speaking but predominantly Protestant, remained in the canton of Bern, which was economically better and the center of the federation. However, there was controversy over the validity of the 2017 referendum in which Moutiers, a small French-speaking city in Bern, decided to join the Jura canton, and it was eventually decided to be invalid. It was confirmed by a re-vote in 2021 and is expected to be transferred around 2026.
