The city's name comes from Sir John Coape Sherbrooke (1764-1830), a British soldier and colonial administrator. In French, it is pronounced Sherbrooke ([ʃɛʁˈbʁʊk]).

In addition to the CEGEP campuses, which serve as junior colleges and university preparatory schools in Quebec's education system, there are two four-year universities in the city.[1] There are a lot of students compared to the size of the city. However, Sherbrooke does not just have cheap housing and suffers from poverty.
